The original idea was to buy the 340 then trade up in a year or two for the F80. But the 340 is very satisfying without the M tax. Maybe if I was in to more tracking I'd make the switch. For now the 340 is more than enough at the dragstrip and the street. Not to mention the xdrive here in the pnw is a must.
My M240 xdrive makes a subtle whine noise under hard acceleration from low speeds. It was that way even at 27k miles when I got it totally stock . But from what I’ve heard it’s not really a problem, everyone has it.
Yeah I mentioned it to BMW and it didn't seem like they even knew how to go about fixing it. But I'm not gonna worry about it. I saw a video of a 240i driving on a race track with most of the interior stripped out. The whining was crazy loud without all the soundproofing stuff in the car
@@NWAuto Yeah I have the same issue in my 2016 340i. Sounds like it’s not a big deal, ZF8 whine is something that has been documented and apparently is “normal” and some just whine more than others. Might swap out fluid soon and see if that fixes it!
I owned my 18 F32 440xi M-Sport, since April of 2020. Picked it up for $36,800 with 8k miles on it from a Audi dealer. Went to look at a new S4 and saw the Glacier Silver 440 sitting there looking pretty. So I parted ways with my 11 E92 335xi, plus $12k in cash and left with the 440. Currently at 35k miles and running Stage 1 93 BM3 tune.
My '16 340 didn't make this noise! However,...I did once test drive an F80 M3 Comp that did have a very whinny noise coming from the differential!,...and weeks later, I test drove another F80 M3 and it didn't have the whinny noise! Good luck with fix! Edit: I have to disagree with one statement,..."tt doesn't look as good as some M models"! C'mon man,...the F30 Series BMWs have some of the best lines in the auto industry - Period!
Most people are telling me that the whining noise isn't a big deal. And yeah the F30 is a beautiful car. But it still looks very tame when parked next to an F80
if it still whines in park you can rule out the front/rear diffs, im a technician and i know transmission whine when i hear it. ZF8 is alien technology and extremely reliable so i wouldn’t sweat it too much, but might be worth a fluid level check

I had driven the modern m340i which is TOO LOUD in the cabin, this was a good mix. There's barely any good 340i's with RWD available anymore, too expensive.
Yeah I wouldn't mind trying MHD. Just don't feel like paying for the license and maps again. But I don't think it is the intake. I've had two different intakes on this car and the whining sound did not change one bit
Define "good weather".....Hot and dry. Cold and dry. Come to the Dakota's. Low taxes, great summers...some hail, "some" snow later...Car pricing is still crazy. I remember when i started looking at S4's and 5. The 4's were around 40 for a 2018, but went to 44-45 when the shortages kicked in. The S5 got really stupid with upper 40's and low 50's...I even started looking at G70's because of the reliability issues. I'm not in the mood to do a nut blasting of the heads every 40 for 1500 plus of get rid the carbon.
Nice Car! I think unless you are doing occasional track days you do not need a dedicated sports car and a commute car. I mean unless you can afford it then by all means yes! But for people that can not afford multiple vehicles and insurance I think it is a great all around sports sedan.
Check ur fluid level on the zf I seen this happen after service ( before was no noise prior to service) Guy went back to the shop that did it and got fill and noise went away.
There’s a panel that you can only see when you open the door, that sometimes pops outta place that makes a sound near the door, it does sound like the sound ur “door” makes, but just see n make sure it’s not that one little panel,
The sound was coming from all four doors. BMW said it was from the door seals rubbing against something. The video I posted didn't do a good job of picking up how loud it really was

After some research, like you metioned it's a rubber seal that you have to use a teflon tape to stop the rubbing. I watched Tommy L Garage on his M3 with the same exact issue. I would stick with maxing out the stock turbo which I think should net you around low 4’s to all wheels. Try to preserve not only your trans but your driveline components. Those things are wayyyyy too expensive to replace! Man I’m still stage 1 93...lol My car is so loud with cold start..I have only the ER catted dp and nothing else on exhaust. Maybe I’ll attach a clip. But loud is relative I guess
Yeah I do worry about parts of the driveline. The engine and trans are pretty strong though. They should be able to handle a turbo upgrade. And whats the rest of your exhaust setup look like?
zf8s are under 1000 dollars and btw if you do xhp and lift torque limits and raise line pressure the clutches wont slip as much, people are pushing 700whp and similiar torque bone stock zf8
I have e92 with electronic steering and it feels good enough and i have a lot of response to when it starts to slide So maybe electronic only in europe, we had hydraulic, hydro and electric adaptive and full electric
The upgraded sound system (Harman Kardon) does come with two subwoofers, one under each of the front seats. I have the 2018 340i with this upgraded system (also track handling package), and the subs are great. Maybe since you got it second handed it wasn’t working properly?

Still getting the whine, seems like it’s more on M140i yurrr my car has a supercharger the way it sounds drives me crazy, I thought it was the water pump at first VW has that sound just before the pump goes. Now I don’t know.
looks so lame stock, those oem wheels are awful - a really nice transformation, car looks how it should now (although not a fan of the mud guard things) I've had a bizarre window issue with mine though, windows will stop working for no reason then suddenly work again for a couple of weeks then stop again

Nah this sounds different. Its a whining sound, not a turbo spool. My friend has the same car and his doesn't make that noise. But I don't think its anything serious
I have a 2016 340i I can confirm this with u as well. When at low speeds the car is very jerky in parking lots. I only notice in 1st gear & when shifting down from 2nd to 1st

Yeah I think thats high unless its a manual. Should be able to get one for 40k. I expect the used car market to cool down a lot in the next 3-6 months. So it might be worth waiting it out a little and then buying when prices are lower
I don’t think the wine is from a differential. If you aren’t rolling then they aren’t spinning. Sounds like the transmission to me. If it has always done it then I wouldn’t be concerned unless it starts to get louder or sound different.

My car also had the whine that increased when I drove faster. It happened twice. Both times it was the oil filter collapsing. 2008 335xi e92 6MT.

The wine is perfectly normal and it’s not the transmission, it’s your air intake. And my suggestion go with MHD next time , I find it better then bm3.

@NW Auto it's the zf gearbox. It's pretty normal. Usually a service at a good specialist will sort it but the whine is not detrimental to the box.

No need to feel guilty when putting miles this is a cheap car that’s really quick as well. It’s meant to be driven
Yeah it was mainly the traffic miles I didn't like putting on. No guilt putting on miles while hitting the backroads and really enjoying it

The B58 is a solid engine and should be fine at 70k. But it also really depends on how the car was driven and how well it was maintained

You don't lose your warranty. But if something breaks, they can blame the mods and deny your warranty claim

They might have added some insulation or padding. I don't even know anymore. There might be some fixes on youtube or the forums

It used to do that. The transmission tune seemed to solve that problem

Asking because I’m about to put on my VRSF catted downpipe and was contemplating an aftermarket intake. Currently using OEM with a drop in filter.
