My biggest problem with modern wrestling fans is that they sometimes act like the audience is a star of the show. They sometimes start chanting for no reason.
That's in every aspect of life. People think they are entitled to be part of everything they want. Plus, there are lots of people that just go there to be hip and take some selfies. So you have a combination of shit people from both sides. Its happening in everything that used to be good.

Sometimes i agree with him. When in don't, i can at least usually understand his point... but when it comes to wrestling, what's good and bad is mostly subjective. And he gets wound up about some silly things.
When I got into wrestling, I knew it was a work, but I was able to get behind the characters. I knew The Undertaker wasn't really an undead zombie from the old west or some satanic monster, but I could see him as a guy using that imagery to play mind games. I could totally believe Mick Foley and Terry Funk were actually crazy. I could believe that there was real heat between Stone Cold and Vince, or that Hulk Hogan was the all American hero. I knew it was "fake", but the characters got me invested and I enjoyed watching them beat the crap out of each other.
It also helped that they never winked at the camera. That's what the modern smarks don't get. It's not that it's a work. It's that wrestling nowadays won't let people lose themselves in the show. If a movie went out of its way to insult my intelligence the way modern wrestling does, I'd walk out the cinema.

The average size of the rest of the male roster is around 5 9 and 200 lbs. Obviously this is an estimate with some being bigger than that (Dustin Rhodes or Jon Moxley) and some being smaller (Darby Allin and Jungle Boy).

This was a Philadelphia Street Fight, but for some reason there were rope breaks in it. Huh??? It's a street fight meaning there is no DQ. I'm already getting tired of the honeymoon phase that fans are in with AEW. From listening to them, you would think that WWE hasn't had a good storyline or even a good moment in the last decade.

What I'm about to say is gonna piss off the AEW faithful if they read it, but I prefer NXT over AEW at the moment. This past week having the OC come out and face Ciampa, Lee, and Riddle was solid. Then Balor coming out and giving AJ the 2 guns while AJ gave him too sweet, got me even more excited. Also, not a fan of the Inner Circle. When I look at them as a whole, they don't seem to fit together. That's not a knock on the talent themselves because I like all of them. It just feels like a hodge podge of guys similar to Aces and Eights in Impact. I'd take the Undisputed Era over them all day. I try to be objective whenever I watch a show. Sadly, I don't see the hardcore AEW fans being that way.

It's the actual in ring action that is the problem. It is so far removed from actual wrestling now that it cant possibly be taken seriously. You will see 10 knees and 15 weak arse kicks along with some flips in every single match. No matter the size of the Wrestler.

Mr. Wombatt there are so many spots in each match that you forget about most of them once the match is over, plus the camera only catches some of them anyway. Every match also feels like it goes 3-4 minutes TOO long which takes you out of it. Gimmicks either don’t exist or aren’t explained. There have been multiple times throughout every single episode of Dynamite where the rules of the match are very confusing, people not getting counting while on the outside, lack of counts during tag team matches, rope breaks in No DQ matches, yet they try to make it realistic via time limits and W/L records on the lower third graphics. So yeah there’s a lot of wrestling as far as wrestlers in a ring, but I guess if a lot of it doesn’t make sense and makes it hard to suspend disbelief, it’s not GOOD wrestling. It is, in some ways, good SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT, and AEW so far has been good at sports entertainment, as triggering as it may be for them to realize it.

He's really spot on, you can't expect anyone to have any real emotion when A ) They know it's a work and B) You're constantly telling them it's a work. Hogan's era was very cartoony and animated, in the WWE, but at least they presented it as a real sport, I remember watching the Survivor Series ppvs and how Monsoon and Heenan would go over the rules of the match just like it was a real sport. "Smartening" the fans up is one of the WORSE things ever to happen to Pro Wrestling because it's one of those things that once you do it, you can't undo it!

My respect for wrestling increased by thousands of percent after finding out more about the endless hard work, the injuries, and the incredible backstories of the wrestlers. That's anything but fake, and people who do things professional gymnasts wouldn't even consider on a daily basis deserve that respect. A good plot, some humor, and performance talent beat anything in any medium. To hell with the bozos.
Wrestling changes with the times but it also doesn't. Every era has the stuff that could be considered goofy. Shit look at when Cornette was a fan before he got into the business or even his era. You had George Steele who was a wild man, Adrian Adonis who was a pretty boy, Ted DiBiase, IRS, The Undertaker, Kane and even Cornette himself. Were it not for Mark and Glenn making the characters work, we would be talking about the Brothers of Destruction in the same vane as the Gobbely Gooker and Bastion Booger.
I'll be honest, it's really hard to go back and watch the new generation era, the Undertaker stuff is very cringe to watch. For me Taker really hit his stride during the attitude era.
Jim has a very narrow look on what Wrestling should be. He thinks that you have to do it in a certain way, the way he watched and liked. People typically confuse Jim only liking not indie stuff like WWE or even that he liked the Attitude Era. What Jim is a fan of is certain territories way of wrestling. Jim focuses a lot on the context of a situation when explaining the 'goofy shit' that he liked or booked back in the day, however, he simply doesn't have that context in the wrestling he watches. And at the end of the day, All Elite is looking for the 50+ market of a wrestling fan. AEW will be looking to get younger people into wrestling, not to make it mainstream but to attract a large audience of people that will want to watch AEW. I imagine AEW are looking to grab 16-40 year old. People who were young during the attitude era. As an 18 year old, I can tell you that AEW is a lot better viewing for a young person than WWE, and what Jim is trying to do is to pull in an audience of babies to old people on their death beds. Where you can't really do that much anymore, you have to select your audience and try and pull them in and from there you can start appealing to other people. As long as your main demographic is strong enough that you won't risk running some of them off.

Kayfabe is when you know it’s fake, but the show is so good that you lose yourself and start treating it like it’s real. Tim Storm’s promos always make me feel like he’s the genuine article and I’m rooting for him and Mama Storm.

I know that Robert Downy Junior is just a goofy Hollyweird actor. What Kayfabe really is is a fictional work keeping its story straight. When you watch a TV show or a movie or read a book or whatever it establishes the world it is in and then things happen that follow the rules of that world. If I'm watching Star Wars I can accept somebody using the Force, even though there is no such thing in real life, because it is established in that fictional world that that is a thing that exists and is plausible. If someone was using the Force in The Sopranos it would destroy the show. Wrestling is a show about a combat sport, presented as if you are watching a real sports broadcast or are attending a real sporting event live. So kayfabe is just making sure that this fictional work fits within that established reality. So something like a penis suplex looks ridiculous because it is inconsistent with the established reality. Same with anything that openly acknowledges that wrestling is fake. The Rocky movies are fake but Rocky doesn't sometimes identify himself as Sylvester Stallone in the movie and acknowledge he's an actor. As a result you can get emotionally invested in it despite being fully aware that it's not something actually happening and the characters are not real people. If your entire promotion is goofy comedy wrestling then I think that can be consistent with the established fictional setting but then you can't mix it with serious stuff or acknowledge it in a wrestling league that is playing it straight.
Yep, I've said this for years, movies keep me emotionally invested and wrestling which is "live" can no longer do this. I wish I was in charge, I'd book things soooooooo differently then they are today and there would be 1/4 of the amount of wrestling on that you see today, quality over quantity my friends!

8:28 as a kid in the 80s I was one of the people Jim's describing. Hell, my dad told me one guy got beaten up in the parking lot after the show for winning a match he wasn't "supposed" to but yet I still had trouble figuring out who really hated who and why Wrestler A beat Wrestler B instead of the other way around. And it was so much better that way.

Are they really petite when most of the roster is of similar size? The two largest male wrestlers on their roster are Hager and Wardlow at around 260. The average size of the rest of the male roster is around 5 9 and 200 lbs. Obviously this is an estimate with some being bigger than that (Dustin Rhodes or Jon Moxley) and some being smaller (Darby Allin and Jungle Boy).

This was a Philadelphia Street Fight, but for some reason there were rope breaks in it. Huh??? It's a street fight meaning there is no DQ. If I'm in the match and hold the ropes past the 5 count, what the hell is the ref gonna do???
I'm already getting tired of the honeymoon phase that fans are in with AEW. From listening to them, you would think that WWE hasn't had a good storyline or even a good moment in the last decade.

What I'm about to say is gonna piss off the AEW faithful if they read it, but I prefer NXT over AEW at the moment. This past week having the OC come out and face Ciampa, Lee, and Riddle was solid. Then Balor coming out and giving AJ the 2 guns while AJ gave him too sweet, got me even more excited. Also, not a fan of the Inner Circle. When I look at them as a whole, they don't seem to fit together. That's not a knock on the talent themselves because I like all of them. It just feels like a hodge podge of guys similar to Aces and Eights in Impact. I'd take the Undisputed Era over them all day. I try to be objective whenever I watch a show. Sadly, I don't see the hardcore AEW fans being that way.

I was at the first round of NWA tapings. I can assure you there was plenty of fuckery to be found during the shows, mainly thanks to Jocephus and the Dawsons. lol
Mr. Wombatt there are so many spots in each match that you forget about most of them once the match is over, plus the camera only catches some of them anyway. Every match also feels like it goes 3-4 minutes TOO long which takes you out of it. Gimmicks either don’t exist or aren’t explained. There have been multiple times throughout every single episode of Dynamite where the rules of the match are very confusing, people not getting counting while on the outside, lack of counts during tag team matches, rope breaks in No DQ matches, yet they try to make it realistic via time limits and W/L records on the lower third graphics. So yeah there’s a lot of wrestling as far as wrestlers in a ring, but I guess if a lot of it doesn’t make sense and makes it hard to suspend disbelief, it’s not GOOD wrestling. It is, in some ways, good SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT, and AEW so far has been good at sports entertainment, as triggering as it may be for them to realize it.
It's only been on for a few weeks just give them a bit more time and they'll fuck it up too.
Just wrestling on its own can be so boring though.

He's really spot on, you can't expect anyone to have any real emotion when A ) They know it's a work and B) You're constantly telling them it's a work. Hogan's era was very cartoony and animated, in the WWE, but at least they presented it as a real sport, I remember watching the Survivor Series ppvs and how Monsoon and Heenan would go over the rules of the match just like it was a real sport. "Smartening" the fans up is one of the WORSE things ever to happen to Pro Wrestling because it's one of those things that once you do it, you can't undo it!

My respect for wrestling increased by thousands of percent after finding out more about the endless hard work, the injuries, and the incredible backstories of the wrestlers. That's anything but fake, and people who do things professional gymnasts wouldn't even consider on a daily basis deserve that respect. A good plot, some humor, and performance talent beat anything in any medium. To hell with the bozos.

Wrestling changes with the times but it also doesn't. Every era has the stuff that could be considered goofy. Shit look at when Cornette was a fan before he got into the business or even his era. You had George Steele who was a wild man, Adrian Adonis who was a pretty boy, Ted DiBiase, IRS, The Undertaker, Kane and even Cornette himself. Were it not for Mark and Glenn making the characters work, we would be talking about the Brothers of Destruction in the same vane as the Gobbely Gooker and Bastion Booger.
I'll be honest, it's really hard to go back and watch the new generation era, the Undertaker stuff is very cringe to watch. For me Taker really hit his stride during the attitude era.
Jim has a very narrow look on what Wrestling should be. He thinks that you have to do it in a certain way, the way he watched and liked. People typically confuse Jim only liking not indie stuff like WWE or even that he liked the Attitude Era. What Jim is a fan of is certain territories way of wrestling.
Jim focuses a lot on the context of a situation when explaining the 'goofy shit' that he liked or booked back in the day, however, he simply doesn't have that context in the wrestling he watches. And at the end of the day, All Elite is looking for the 50+ market of a wrestling fan. AEW will be looking to get younger people into wrestling, not to make it mainstream but to attract a large audience of people that will want to watch AEW.
I imagine AEW are looking to grab 16-40 year old. People who were young during the attitude era. As an 18 year old, I can tell you that AEW is a lot better viewing for a young person than WWE, and what Jim is trying to do is to pull in an audience of babies to old people on their death beds. Where you can't really do that much anymore, you have to select your audience and try and pull them in and from there you can start appealing to other people. As long as your main demographic is strong enough that you won't risk running some of them off.

Kayfabe is when you know it’s fake, but the show is so good that you lose yourself and start treating it like it’s real. Tim Storm’s promos always make me feel like he’s the genuine article and I’m rooting for him and Mama Storm.

Jelly vs olivia was a top star vs a hardcore fuck, yet it took forever. Why is marco stunt being booked at the level of the lucha Bros? They have no mid card. Their lower card is naka naka knock it off, and that's it. Everybody else has 20 minute matches with dives flips and false finishes. I mean corny aint wrong.
I tried to watch Raw 4 years ago and after a match, Micheal Cole described it as a "performance" instead of a match. It made me sad.

Now, I also have to say that I disagree with Cornette's sentiment about Trump because he, at least in this excerpt, doesn't qualify how exactly Trump "put the world in danger". My biggest complaint with everything that dumb fuck says is that...not only does he not understand politics, but he doesn't understand "Suspension of Disbelief." I know that Robert Downy Junior is just a goofy Hollyweird actor. But for 2 hours or whatever, I'm willing to buy that he's a billionaire mega genius who built a metal suit which allows him to fly and shoot energy and crap. I know that Mark Calloway is an older man who'd been hurt far too many times and has probably enjoyed partying way too much. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think the vast majority of fans are like this.

What Kayfabe really is is a fictional work keeping its story straight. When you watch a TV show or a movie or read a book or whatever it establishes the world it is in and then things happen that follow the rules of that world. If I'm watching Star Wars I can accept somebody using the Force, even though there is no such thing in real life, because it is established in that fictional world that that is a thing that exists and is plausible. If someone was using the Force in The Sopranos it would destroy the show.
Wrestling is a show about a combat sport, presented as if you are watching a real sports broadcast or are attending a real sporting event live. So kayfabe is just making sure that this fictional work fits within that established reality. So something like a penis suplex looks ridiculous because it is inconsistent with the established reality. Same with anything that openly acknowledges that wrestling is fake. The Rocky movies are fake but Rocky doesn't sometimes identify himself as Sylvester Stallone in the movie and acknowledge he's an actor. As a result you can get emotionally invested in it despite being fully aware that it's not something actually happening and the characters are not real people.
If your entire promotion is goofy comedy wrestling then I think that can be consistent with the established fictional setting but then you can't mix it with serious stuff or acknowledge it in a wrestling league that is playing it straight.
Yep, I've said this for years, movies keep me emotionally invested and wrestling which is "live" can no longer do this. I wish I was in charge, I'd book things soooooooo differently then they are today and there would be 1/4 of the amount of wrestling on that you see today, quality over quantity my friends!

8:28 as a kid in the 80s I was one of the people Jim's describing. Hell, my dad told me one guy got beaten up in the parking lot after the show for winning a match he wasn't "supposed" to but yet I still had trouble figuring out who really hated who and why Wrestler A beat Wrestler B instead of the other way around. And it was so much better that way.

AEW, WWE, and NXT's audience keeps dwindling with time. When wrestling was at it's height, there was a level of belief or legitimacy to it from the viewers that watched it. Now that it's openly silly and fake, people just don't care anymore and we see how jaded the viewers out due to how much they tune out.

Jim Cornette is probably the greatest pro-wrestling manager ever, and I have newfound respect for him listening to all of the behind the scenes youtube footage. I mean, I remember my friend Guy and I going to liquor stores to find the obscure pro-wrestling magazines when we were in jr high. Cornette is a legend.
