I went to this show in person, it was amazing. I actually got the extreme honor of meeting the Maestro on his way back to his seat. He is very humble and I got to thank him personally it was amazing.
I had the pleasure and honor of meeting him briefly about 15 years ago following a concert he conducted at Symphony Hall. He is exactly the person you think he would be; gentle, grandfatherly and almost unbelievably humble.
You know why he's smiling? Because the orchestra knows his pieces so well now he basically gets to just enjoy them performed exactly how he imagined without having to really conduct them. they're anticipating him at every snap, bringing a smile to his face.
@@michaelgraves5686 haha. It’s interesting. I moved to California 7 years ago and I had no idea that John Williams had yearly concerts at the Hollywood bowl. I’m a huge fan of classical and soundtrack music and I searched for concerts and found the tickets. I have listened to John Williams my whole life. I knew I couldn’t miss this chance! I’m going to the first Friday show! I wish I knew I’d be there every year!
This man is a cultural behemoth. The amount of iconic soundtracks he’s created over his career, the very essence and soul of works that’s defined not only our popular culture, but that has impacted and influenced so many, is difficult to comprehend or articulate the impact of. What a remarkable life he’s led, and a remarkable legacy he’s going to leave behind.
I've never seen a video that shows John conducting the whole time. Seeing his excitement and big smile made me tear up. The man's in his 90s, seeing him this happy and knowing he still wants to compose and conduct movies makes me so happy
What a concert ! I was so lucky to be there, my best memory of this night is Itzhak Perlman playing Schindler's list. My God, i have never heard something like that in my life
The most overlooked fact is that John's music for these iconic films aren't just a soundtrack to be played throughout the characters' scenes... the music IS a character. You cannot have Indiana Jones without his partner, the Raiders March.
The "Raiders" soundtrack was the first CD I ever bought. At the time there were only a few hundred titles available on CD from ANY genre, and it served me well as an audio "reference" disc. Heck, it still does; I still have it. Just amazing...like all of John Williams' work.
I was in the audience for this! This was for John's 90th birthday celebration and it was practically a party! Before this, Itzhak Perlman made a surprise appearance to play the theme from _Schindler's List._
I'm a retired grades 5-12 band teacher from rural Minnesota. Many of my bands rehearsed and performed his music I am already dreading the day when he passes away. I will need ample time for mourning.
The John Williams composition that chokes me up every time is from the Chris Reeves Superman movie when the helicopter is about to fall and suddenly the familiar red-and-blue figure flies up to the theme of the Superman March. It is an indelible memory from my younger days and an example of the perfect music for such an iconic moment as the first appearance of the Man of Steel in that movie.
I often debate if it's my favorite movie moment of all time or not. I cry like a baby every time, not just for the music but for the incredible performance of Chris as Superman.
Ive been obsessing about john recently. Half a year ago i heard the SF philharmonic play a brilliant version of his 1984 olympic fanfare and it made my hair stand on end. His textural counterpoints are without match. When i compose and use tools like lairing oboe, basoon, and trombone, it feels like cheating. When john dpes it, its magic. Then he dpes this thing where the orchestra goes so quiet and the first/second strings basically ay a wall of black ink at pianossimo in unison. Absolutely monumental. The depth that he mines his brass sections cant be overrated. It draws inspiration from Holst, Elgar, and Souza. But never in a dour militaristic way. John wouldnt have wrotten, "Bringer of War", he qould write, "Bringer of Awesome". Cant believe im on the same planet as someone so brilliant.
Went to the 2023 concert at Hollywood Bowl last week. He pretty much plays the same music year after year. But it never gets old. The new arrangements and special guests keep it fresh.
Maestro shouldn't have to work on his birthday, lol! I love this man... he made the musical scores on ALL of my favorite movies sound absolutely brilliant! He's a treasure to the entire world!
I was delighted to see him conduct the encore! It was perhaps the only opportunity I shall ever have to see him conduct. It was a lovely, meaningful event!
Even though it’s a celebration and he’s very old, he goes right into work mode (or a very good imitation of it). So many things healthwise can go wrong by 90.
@@iceomistar4302 add to my favorite composers Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, I will also add Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Maurice Jarre, and Henry Mancini as my favorites of that age group.
It's quite clear that he couldn't see the trombone who plays the countertheme and failed to give him the attack a few seconds earlier. The trombonist started playing nevertheless, and clearly Williams notice him once he hears the sound, smiles at him and gives him the attack for the second phrase.
