Today we Are taking a Walking Tour around Downtown Detroit Michigan. We will be sightseeing
from Downtown Detroit, The Riverwalk, and then head to Greek Town.
Downtown Detroit:
Downtown Detroit is the central business district and a residential area of the city of Detroit, Michigan, United States. Detroit is the major city in the larger Metro Detroit region. Downtown Detroit is bordered by M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to the west, Interstate 75 (I-75, Fisher Freeway) to the north, I-375 (Chrysler Freeway) to the east, and the Detroit River to the south. The city's main thoroughfare M-1 (Woodward Avenue) links Downtown to Midtown, New Center, and the North End.
Downtown contains much historic architecture and many of the prominent skyscrapers in Detroit, including the Renaissance Center, the Penobscot Building, One Detroit Center, and the Guardian Building. Historic churches, theatres, and commercial buildings anchor the various downtown districts. Downtown has a number of parks including those linked by a promenade along the International Riverfront. Its central square is Campus Martius Park.
In recent years the downtown area has seen tremendous growth and redevelopment. Since 2000 a number of major construction projects have been completed including the new Compuware Headquarters at Campus Martius Park and two new stadiums: Comerica Park and Ford Field. General Motors moved their headquarters into the Renaissance Center, and the Detroit Lions have relocated from Pontiac to Downtown Detroit. High-profile events like the 2005 MLB All-Star Game, Super Bowl XL, and the 2006 and 2012 World Series have taken place in downtown, generating income for local businesses and spurring more growth.[1] As a result, new residents are moving into Detroit in the assortment of new lofts that are opening. An example of these trends is the Westin Book-Cadillac Hotel. In 2006, the Cleveland-based Ferchill Group began the $180 million redevelopment of the historic Book Cadlliac Hotel at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Michigan Avenue. The project, which has been hailed by preservationists houses a 455-room Westin Hotel, 67 high-end condominiums, and two to three restaurants, and some miscellaneous retail serving hotel and conference center guests. DTE Energy Headquarters features an urban oasis of parks, walkways, and a reflecting pool.[2]

I met a guy from Detroit in 96'. He was an underground dj for house parties. He said Detroit was rough like an uncut diamond. The beauty is always there. You just need to put the work into making it sparkle. I always loved that. It looks like alot of work is being put in to make it sparkle.

I am from Saudi Arabia and I lived in Detroit from 2008 until 2013, and now I returned to my country I missed Detroit so much, I swear to you that when I watch a video about it on TH-cam I feel sad because I am far away from it now, I feel that I want to cry because I miss it so much, Detroit is a charming city with all its details, with all the contradictions, in it richness and poverty, in it white and black people, in it houses full of life and abandoned homes, even its abandoned homes are beautiful as if it were a painting by the painter Picasso or Da Vinci, Detroit is not just a city but rather a history that carries stories Time will not erase it,

16:00 The man sitting in the wheel chair is Cyrus. He sits there just about everyday. He's homeless and is doing anything he can to pay his medical bills. I chat with him from time to time and he's a very genuine guy. If you can, spare him some change, food or something to drink. Also thanks for showing the city in a positive light. Lot is happening here and people still sadly bash it

I was born in Detroit, my family moved to Los Angeles when I was 14 years of age-- and so many people here really think all of Detroit is condemned and tore up, when you tell them, that the media will only show the bad part of any city, then they shut up. Since I have grew up in Los Angeles, I have visited Detroit before the pandemic. I am so glad that I had a chance to live in Detroit. When this pandemic leaves. I will make a effort to visit in the summer; Winter are beautiful there. I am so glad and proud of Detroit, having relatives who live there. @@thebabbler8867 I don't think Los Angeles is a shithole Hammer LOL. Most of the homeless have been placed in transitional housing or either sent back to the state where they came from. Many states send their homeless here. Because they don't want to deal with their homeless people in their state. That's how it got out of hand in Los Angeles. However, it is being resolved Hammer, once the city find out how they got here? they are back on a bus going back to their state. Cant have a homeless camps anymore city goes and tear them down. New Law came in 2021. Most of the homeless from other states are give a check to get a greyhound ticket and sent back to their state Hammer

Depends on what part of Detroit you live in. I'm in Mexican Town I like it here but on the west side best not be on the streets when nighttime falls. It's bad enough in the daytime.
@@nicholassutton8210 The poor sold their homes to people that aren't poor. Ten years ago you could buy a home for $10,000 . Now it's $60,000 depending on the area. Someone is dumping a lot of money in Detroit because they got it so cheap.

It is heaven compared to the 1950's. Soot was in the air, buses everywhere, factories making parts for cars. Loud, people everywhere and the sidewalks were crowded. I used to go to Detroit with my Dad on Saturdays to my Dad's Law Office. When I was a little older I could leave his office and go to J.L. Hudson's, the biggest department store in the country. Many floors and so many things to look at. My Dad's office changed a couple times and I had to find my way. It was wonderful. Speaking of today what city had no homeless problem. Detroit has it together. No looting. Michigan is the best kept secret ‼️
I remember Hudson's. We used to go there when I was a kid. I stole a mickey mouse necklace from there back in '76. It used to be a wonderful place.
I was born in Detroit in 1946 . Lived there until 1969. My sisters and I go back to our old neighborhood to reminisce every so often. We lived about 12 blocks from Downtown and walked down there a lot. Many wonderful memories!
One more thing. Downtown is very nice and some other neighborhoods are too. But there are also places that are not so good like in most cities.
I was born in 1948 at Grace Hospital. It's the hospital Houdini died in. The hospital was torn down somewhat recently. Detroit rocks.

There is progress being made. Kercheval and Van Dyke area, Livernois Avenue of Fashion and Russell Woods are 3 areas seeing major streetscape improvements to improve other business corridors.

Is there any homeless people in downtown?
@@itstheweather642 not really. Maybe one or two within a mile. They haven’t been around much during Covid. If you take public transportation then you might see some. I’ve lived here all my life and never been robbed or had any problems downtown, not even at night. The city really is beautiful. We have amazing museum and architect, there’s lots of classes you could talk to learn new things and plenty of free stuff to do. My favorite during the last year was outdoors yoga and visiting the dog parks. I believe you would enjoy yourself even if you came for a day.

My wife and i are lifelong michiganders, myself half my life in detroit we are now seeing the rebuilding after 40 yrs of decline. I only wish we were young enough to see it too completion.

Detroit certainly has a lot of issues. But the downtown area is just gorgeous! I'm impressed on how clean it is. How quiet and calm it is. I just love it. Media definitely shows the burdens of the city.
I would love to see more of these videos in the media so people can have both sides of the story. I hope Detroit keeps improving. I was there in 95. And downtown looked like a dystopian city. Seeing this now it is just an eye opening. GO DETROIT GO!!!

I think climate change , unafordabiliy in other cities will make Detroit change for the good. At least they are not loosing population like a few years or decades back. @@Redridge07 The manufacturing jobs left, and GM was facing bankruptcy. Detroit was a blue collar city mostly. The wealthy, educated live in Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor and other areas. That's why people left.

This is dope! I've lived here 40 years and I love my city. We get a bad rep, but honestly Detroit has good and bad parts just like any major city. Our downtown has definitely been on the come up. Hopefully all the businesses are able to recover from the covid hit. The majority are small and independently owned. Thanks for sharing the beauty of the D!

@@DA-db9bi I don't doubt that. There is a lot of crime here. I'm not denying that. But, I can say that MOST crimes here are not random. They're domestic, gang or drug related, or there's some other back story. I've never experienced any of it because I don't involve myself in bs, I watch the company I keep, and I move with common sense wherever I am.

@@ewilliams9981 I agree with this. I used to live in Detroit. I've never witnessed nor been a victim of any crime. Majority of the foolishness that goes on in the city is not at random, watching the news, both sides are almost always involved. I see Caucasians and non black minorities in Detroit living like they're in a Utopia or LaLa land. Living a luxurious urban city life for far less money than other major cities. They are rarely targeted in crimes even in the just barely gentrified areas that haven't fully developed yet where it's still run down beside the newly restored/renovated home they own. Lots of black families in historic districts or simply well maintained neighborhoods that are unbothered. Also the crime rate accounts for other cities in Southeast Michigan as well.
If you want to get an idea of the progress made in Detroit in the 2010s, know that in 2011 there were over a dozen abandoned skyscrapers in the city. They have all since been renovated and command the highest rents in the state of Michigan.
I’m watching it whilst on a gym bike in Warsaw, Poland. It kinda feels like I’m cycling thru Aretha’s town ;-)

As someone who lived here a few years before and who hasn't been back since the pandemic, this was very sentimental but alien. The city is so quiet and empty now in comparison to how it usually is.
If only Fortune 500 companies and a few of the tech giants like Amazon and Netflix can call Detroit their home--this will catalyze Detroit's comeback! I really love seeing Detroit being brought back to life! I've been watching videos about it and I'm really happy to see the changes for this beautiful city! Who knows, i might move here one day

I HOPE ONE DAY SOONER than later to see the MONROE BLOCK BUILT . I would have PREFERRED That to have been built 1st b4 the Hudson site... eventually SOMETHING would have gone on Woodward . That would , COULD BE an AMAZING fill in if built as the original concept...But for now I guess the pop up drive theater is a nice use of this space MUCH SUCCESS until ( HOPEFULLY ) the Monroe blocks NEED to proceed !

Beautiful, clean, safe historic city. It was the number one city in the world. My great-grandfather had Wilson Truck and employed Henry Ford. The best came to Wilson Truck to learn or experts asked to work there. Wilson Truck, late 1800's. Look that up. He was friends with Thomas Edison. People came from all over the world. The made parts for Cadillac, Ford and others.

So much music talent from Detroit. All the Motown singers were neighbors, can you imagine the sound walking down the street ⁉️ Stevie Wonder, Bob Seeger, Eminem, Kid Rock and others. The original Rock and Roll Hitsville Hall of Fame is in Detroit. Beautiful sculptures in the city. Wonderful Detroit Art Museum. I saw the Van Gogh show in early 1960. What an experience. Saw Annie with my parents and daughter at Fisher Theater. Used to go to the University Club and Players Club for Christmas parties. My Dad acted in Player's Club. Always got a new dress❗
The Guardian building at 25:13 is an architectural masterpiece. Finished in 1929, it is a bold example of Art Deco styling. The details in the construction are meticulous and exquisite. The three story lobby will take your breath away.

I used to work downtown end of 70s to 86 federal reserve bank and then the main post office near downtown in the early to mid 90s during the new transformation its always been special for me to make a trip to DOWNTOWN DETROIT usually to pay my property taxes or other business ( which CANT BE DONE NOW - Thanks to covid ) and walk around and photograph the new changes and see all the people going about there lives here in the city . My wish is Downtown Survive and CONTINUE to EXPAND and give MORE PEOPLE REASONS to be there and though out the city...SHOUT OUT TO GREEN ACRES neighborhood Detroit !

You should check out an alley way called the Belt which has a lot of murals. The Z Park Garage right next to it has a lot of murals as well. I think that area has like 27 murals. On top of the Z Park gives a really great video of Downtown (a lot of people like to take Instagram and Weddings photos there).

I love the architecture of the old skyscrapers in Detroit. I really can't wait until all of them are repurposed into anything other than high-end apartments or condos.
Personally I don’t mind the High Ends WE NEED THEM TOO . Matter of fact I’m HOPING for the day when THERES A DEMAND for High end CONDOMINIUMS instead of just annual lease agreements which brings a better and more stable tax base to this area .

Still need some work to connect parts of downtown. Area's between Woodward and Greektown could use some building up and filling in, but it's definitely getting there. Give it another 5-10 years and it may be very well filled in.
They’re building on the old Hudson’s site on Woodward.. gonna be the tallest building in Detroit.

I lived downtown Detroit for 22 years. Loved it. Moved because I needed more room. I am still in walking distance. Detroit is a beautiful city. Yes we have some rough spots like all major cities. Visit us you will find it interesting
I left Michigan in 1991 to Orlando. I do miss Detroit at times. Looking better than 10 years ago!

@@jiefuli5283 Then you know ath 7 mile all the way from gratiot to telegraphe is a living hell. Let alone grand river downton to evergreen. They even made grand river a two lane road so it's more congested now. Evergreen is truck lane now too. Shits all messed up and our basements keep flooding.
I skate at riverside park. We had 4 shootings there so they turned off the lights. Tony hawk was so upset that he said he would never build a skatepark in detroit again. This place is a dump, trash everywhere too. Super high taxes. Only good part of detroit is wayne state college area. The stereotype is more real than you think.
@@acetech8642 Everyone in the world knows Detroit has shitty places but no one knows Detroit has good areas too. I don't deny anything you said but you should also admit that there are good spots in Detroit and it has been getting better in recent years.

Honestly, Detroit looks like it has so much potential. Look at all those people downtown, sitting in the sun. You don't see that in some cities. Take downtown Jacksonville for example. Riverfront, outdoor shopping and dining pavilion, 2 minor league stadiums and the Jags stadium. Yet, it's a friggin ghost town.
I was told Thank The Southern Baptist of Florida for that one. Lived In J ville and it was strange.

Wow just saw the David Stott building. It was also home to the FM underground radio station WABX! I used to get on the elevator with all kinds of just starting out rock stars who were playing in Detroit and doing an interview at WABX or ABX as we said!! The dock city then 70's!!
I believe that the Lou Gordon Show also came out of the Stott building. I think it was syndicated in other cities as well, but not sure. The guest talk show (no audience) existed from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's and often dealt with controversial subjects. Among the repeated guests I remember were old transsexual Rachel Harlow, the NYC "Scoop the Poop" lady Fran Lee, one time child evangelist Marjo, Father Malachi Martin, Atheist Madelaine Murray O'hare, and many others. Franco Colombo once blew up a hot water bottle on his show.

I'm so glad this is here! This is my home. Downtown Detroit is awesome!! Such a bad reputation.
Yeah detroit has changed greatly, still need a little fixing but soon going to be a tourist attraction I bet. Lots of construction going on here
Detroit is coming up, I'm happy about that. Detroit was really fun back in the '80s. Cobo Hall always had stuff going on as well as the Majestic Theatre. We had fun high schools like Cass, Mumford, Kettering, Pershing, Osborn, Denby etc.. We had the Boblo boats that would take us to Canada for the carnival rides. We had tons of shopping malls. We'd get the latest fashions before everyone else aside from NYC.
No one tells you this either, but Detroit has wonderful Coney Island restaurants where you can get the greasiest most delicious chili and hotdogs, if you like hotdogs. It also has Belle Isle, which is a little island off of the river where many people go to picnic and get on the giant slide and have a good time by the river.
We had our wonderful Cathedrals. Some of the reasons that Detroit went down is because the manufacturing jobs left the city, and people were caught with their pants down because a lot of them didn't bother to go back to college and take up a trade, so they were left w/out jobs. Also, corrupt people like Kwame Kilpatrick got in office and ran Detroit underground with corruption and theft of Detroit monies.
As far as the housing situation goes, a lot of the Detroit streets you see with horrible looking houses is because I found that many of the houses were 100+ years old and full of lead w/outdated designs that fell in disrepair and were never renovated or new houses built upon those because no one could afford them anyway as people were heading to Ohio and other places, but those bad houses you see need to go anyway due to the lead they contained.

YES I DO FONDLY remember I ALSO REMEMBER the Flea MARKET that lined up on the lower end area of Woodward.... Can’t seem to find ANY FOOTAGE of that anywhere , back in that era THRONGS OF PEOPLE would be there shoulder to shoulder at BOTH the Ethnic FESTIVALS and the FLEA MARKET I love the changes to downtown NOW but there’s NO comparison to HOW CROWDED this area USED TO BE SHOUT OUT TO EMILY GALE ...SAY NICE THINGS ABOUT DETROIT !
