    When it comes to giant bosses I usually think that the best ones are ones that make you feel like you're the size of an ant compared to this beast that you're fighting. If you have to climb up the giants body or avoid attacks that would kill you instantly if you make a mistake that would be great. Because it makes your eventual victory against a colossal enemy all the more satisfying.

    Having Big Shot be the transition music for this list is somehow both unexpected and perfect in the context of the entries. I mean, who has more of a chance to be a BIG SHOT than a colossus of a boss?

    Okay, let's do this. Also, love how he used "Big Shot" as the song between entries.
    15: Who else knew that he was going to be here? (Giant Bowser (Mario))
    14: Scarecrow is a seriously underrated villain in Batman's rogue's gallery. (Scarecrow (Arkham))
    13: Why is it that Kirby is the only Nintendo game that is credited with having so many eldritch horrors? I mean, LOOK AT THIS THING! (Quaggled Mireclops (Pikmin 3))
    12: The pattern continues; a new generation comes out, and the fanbase turns their attention of hatred onto the new game and gives the old one the credit it deserved. At least Scarlet/Violet has some of the best storytelling in the franchise to compensate for how buggy it was on release. (Eternatus (Sword & Shield))
    11: I ALWAYS got hit with the attack that turns Bayonetta back into a child, WITHOUT FAIL. (Jubileus (Bayonetta))
    10: Honestly, I see why people like Carmelita, but she's just not my style. (Giant Carmelita (Sly 3))
    9: So, despite being the poster child of the franchise, is Rathalos just... bad? Because I never hear anyone talking about the thing. (Berserk Laviente (Monster Hunter Frontier Z))
    8: I am apparently really bad at button mashing, because as soon as this colossus goes for its big bite attack to swallow Sonic whole, I always barely run out of time and have to start the fight all over again. (Giganto (Sonic Frontiers))
    7: I REALLY need to play this game. (Metal Gear Excelsus (Metal Gear Rising))
    6: Can we PLEASE get another game from this franchise already? Or at least a remaster? (Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising))
    5: This is why humanity sucks most of the time. (Malus (Shadow of the Colossus))
    4: That thing looks EPIC! (Sin (Final Fantasy X))
    3: Maybe I can stop him in time! BEAM ATTACK! (Star Dream (Kirby Planet Robobot))
    2: And this is the first boss?! (Wyzen (Asura's Wrath))
    1: Now THIS is a Titan! (Cronos (God fo War 3))

      with the monster hunter thing i think its not so much that his fight is bad per se, its just not as big or as flashy as the other monsters in the series (especially the "final bosses" like alatreon or dalamadur.) he shares this with many of the flagships like lagiacrus, misutsune and malzeno where they might be the cover monsters but they get overshadowed by others in their own title in terms of scale or spectacle. even his own variants are often more referenced then he is in the grand scheme of it, unless you look at certain parts of the internet (the ones we all know of, acknowledge and often not want to see) anyways.

    • @michaelsleeman2443
      @michaelsleeman2443 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rathalos is basically the Pikachu of the franchise: iconic, reliable in all sorts of situations, and outclassed by not only other choices, but other related to it (Pikachu evolves to the stronger Raichu after all, and Rathalos has had a few variations, from its two subspecies (azure and silver) apex form in rise, and the deviant firm in Generations).
      It's not that's a bad monster or holding the franchise back, but it's armor and weapons doesn't hold up in the endgame as well as it's variants or even elder dragons. Besides that, the list is about giant bosses, so it really couldn't have been a good entry for this list. Maybe if he does an iconic monsters list, or talks about his favorite Monster Hunter fight, then we might see Rathalos.
      Also you can dodge Giganto's laser and parry the attack where he tries to eat you. That second one gives you the chance to hit him with a powerful counter, which should beat him easier.

    • @kylestubbs8867
      @kylestubbs8867 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Well… he was mentioned, but as Josh said, you break him down to a more Asura-friendly size.

    • @maaxorus
      @maaxorus ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, he is bigger than Wyzen at the end of the game, but that's not all there is to a giant enemy. I feel like Wyzen gave you a much better sense of scale, something that was achieved precisely because he didn't have those literally astronomical proportions. Second, I really liked the final phase of Chakravartin where he's shrinking back down. After all, what does size matter to a being of creation, and the arena they fought in was quite esoteric and alien, which I liked.

    • @MrOrcshaman
      @MrOrcshaman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylestubbs8867 Really makes no sense, because when it boils down to it, its just about when in their respected fights they are their normal size or the god mode size. @karmicrespite5737 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do think it's funny that most of the other fights never reach that same scale (not saying they're bad just not... that big), and it's pointed out that it's explicitly because Wyzen actually used up all of the other gods' powers to fuel up that super form. It's been a while since I saw the gameplay, but I know that a lot of the actual plot issues and such are because Wyzen used so much of the Mantra that had been saved for his super form that all the other gods had to redouble their "farming efforts" to get it back.

    • @lucar1154
      @lucar1154 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@karmicrespite5737 That and Wyzen's planet-sized form was just all talk. I mean, Asura just had to punch one of his fingers hard enough to kill him. Clearly, this giant form wasn't stable at all. And the other Gods knew that and they proved that they were right. Yasha, Augus, and Deus would eat Wyzen's planet-sized form for breakfast.

    I legit cried tears of joy when "Undefeatable" (side note, contextually and without context, this is now my absolute favorite Sonic boss fight theme: I've memorized the lyrics it's so damn good...yes, I love it more than "What I'm Made Of", "Open Your Heart", and "Live & Learn"...fight me >:3) started playing at the beginning of that fight: just...the moment you grab that 7th Chaos Emerald and Sonic shoots up in to the sky like a golden comet and slowly descends with a disapproving glower that turns in to that smug smirk...such a beautiful moment. It really is just that look that screams "Hope you're ready, 'cause it's about to get REAL up in here." And yes, to those who haven't played Sonic Frontiers yet, your ears did not deceive you: Josh DID just say that Giganto is the FIRST boss! You know it's going to be a GOOD Sonic game when it treats the FIRST boss fight the way most Sonic games treat their FINAL boss fights! I just wish THIS game treated its final boss fight better. Oh don't worry, Supreme is a pretty good battle...but it's not the final boss, because he's not The End. Yeah, for being a literal moon of destruction, The End is kinda...meh (seriously, if I had a nickel for every time I fought a celestial body and it turned out to be kinda mid...I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, though it's weird that it happened twice); I feel like we could have gotten a fight on a grander scale, going around punching this thing, barely making a dent in it, showing how imposing this thing really is, and even having its attacks hurt you by taking away rings, which would show just how DANGEROUS this thing is considering there aren't many things capable of taking away Super Sonic's rings. Also, maybe just a nitpick from me, but I feel like "I'm With You", the beautiful instrumental theme for The End's fight, is missing lyrics: like, I can hear the lyrics screaming behind closed lips, and I so DESPERATELY want to hear them sing! Maybe later down the road we'll get a better, more complete-feeling fight, but eh...semantics. At least the other boss fights more than make up for the meh final fight.

While not the biggest boss in gaming, the lead up to the fight is amazing; you represent Hope and she represents Despair. You’re riding on the back of Zenos who has taken the form of the dragon Shinryu and just as it seems like The Endsinger has taken you out…*your* phase 2 begins, your theme song playing as her movements become panicked and erratic until finally, she falls.

      For some reason I thought of Void Termina before Star Dream despite the latter being FAR larger in size. It's just that Void Termina's first phase has such heavy weight to its movements that it _feels_ big, even if in actuality it's smaller than many bosses on this list.

    The thing about Giganto, imo, is that it only feels as massive as it does because you actively climb it, alongside the fact that on the rare occassion we saw it, it was from a camera angle that REALLY exaggerated the sheer scale of the thing.
    Wyvern is easily far larger if you count length, with its body size in length being comparable in the size of its island, and Knight is just absolutely titanic, with the sole downside being that, despite being so ridiculously large, most of that size comes from its lower half.
    That said, Giganto is still amazing, and the power trip you go on in this fight is crazy. The other two battles are wild, don't get me wrong, but they feel more like challenges of Sonic's speed and raw power as Super Sonic. Giganto feels like Sonic slipping into the form for the first time in ages and really stretching to see how far he can push that power..

    -The Titans in Olympus, Kingdom Hearts III: Magma, Wind, Ice, and Earth. With the assistance of a demigod like Hercules, Sora uses parkour to annihilate each and every titan(excluding the Cyclops, I guess) as a more Disney oriented and innocent Kratos. Really excited to see the Quadratum Darkside fight to kick off Kingdom Hearts IV when it finally releases.
    -Beast Ganon, Zelda Breath of the Wild: A finale to remember. Link gains the light arrows from Zelda's spirit, and goes on horseback to finish off this eltrich abomination! The music is quite intense also.
    -MG Ray and MG Hippocampus(or whatever it's called), Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain: First one proves Rules of Nature creates hype, while an Indiana Jones villain reject stomps around in a mecha and Big Boss uses the same-ass bombs to destroy it.
    -The Mermaid Queen, Wilbur, and Empress Siren, Shantae Half Genie Hero, and Shantae and the Seven Sirens: There are some who think they're fucking hot for some reason, except the giant worm pet of Mary Sue Shantae(Holly Lingerbean). It wouldn't be Shantae without our favorite gal having surroundings to focus on so the colossi will fall as one of the starter bosses or final boss.
    -Mundus and Urizen, Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 5: Though the latter isn't technically the same size as the King of the Underworld, they count. Firstly a battle in the sky, and on land, then the final hit alongside Trish with the quote "Jackpot!". Urizen on the other hand, is just Vergil's devil half manifested into some titanic monstrosity. After eating the Qliphoth Fruit, Urizen(or should I say Vergil's other next to V) gets his tree root like body fall off of him and reveal the appearance of a rejected kaiju design. I can see the connection between DMC5 and DragonBall Z with Goku's more powerful Super Saiyan forms(as hinted with the inspiration to Sin Devil Trigger for Dante) and Massive Ape form of Vegeta(Urizen for Vergil excluding V since he's more in line with a Nobody).

    A couple bosses I'd put on the list.
    S-02. A giant robot snake in The Amazing Spider-Man game. This game has a good handful of giant robots Spidey has to fight.
    Trypticon. A massive space station/orbital laser cannon/Deception. The 9th level is about shutting down Trypticon Station, only for the Autobots to learn the massive, city sized weapon is a living being. And the 10th level is just a fight against the massive beast.
    Twinmo.....oh you put it in honorable mentions. Ok.
    Territorial Rotbart. Big level 81 gorilla in all three Xenoblade Chronicles games that the devs put in a super early spot just to make players piss themselves. Level 81 boss, and you're no higher than level 15 by the time you meet it. And even 15 is pushing it.

    The items that Star Dream summons were actually all over Nova's design! The weather vane, the pocket watch, the piano keys, the lightbulb, etc. were all essentially references to the first Clockwork Star in the series. I thought that was really neat.

    While Star Dream is amazing final boss and probably my favorite final boss in any Kirby game, a big honorable mention definitely goes to Void Termina from Star Allies. Not only is it the first fully 3D boss fight in the series, even predating the actual 3D game with Forgotten Land, but you can truly feel its size and scale as it stomps and fires projectiles around the battlefield as you barely dodge its deadly attacks. Then when you go inside its body to fight its true form, Void Soul, it not only largely resembles Kirby, but also turns into Dark Matter, which strongly hints a connection between the two. Even the lore behind it is very interesting since it states that Void Termina was the very first creature to come into existence once the universe was formed, and that after killing it in Soul Meter EX, it becomes reincarnated into a much purer and more happy form. Hence why after beating it, you unlock Kirby’s OG appearance from the first game, as it’s meant to represent a recreated Void.
    So overall, not only is VT a great example of a giant boss fight due to the sheer scale of it, but with the crazy huge implications it leaves for the overall series as well.

    The guardian from darksiders 2 is one of my favorite giant bosses of all time. The music, spectacle, and design, not to mention buildup is extremely memorable. Like the fact you go through the previous dungeon finding the stones to bring him to life only to destroy him in the next chapter. I know he’s technically an attempt at making a shadow of the colossus boss but I think he fits real nicely in his own game as an excellent early game boss

    Got to admit, one of my favorite mega boses was from the first God of War, Ares. Even from the beginning you see this god of a man towering over the city sweeping his arms about like a child knocking over his toy blocks and you know that as soon as you get close to him you are pretty much nothing compared to him. I mean the end fight makes you have to become giant yourself just to face him! That is how powerful ares is.

    There is a discrepancy with chakravartin it in his final battle in Asura's Wrath. He is actually the size of Asura in his destroyer form since it's shown that Asura is in that form when he gets to the event horizon. The event horizon just makes everything to scale! The truth of the matter is he still the size of a damn planet. A lot of people just don't get that inside the event horizon Asura is still canonically in his destroyer form he is not sized down he has just reached the inner layer of Chakravartin's Golden Buddha form which in and of itself is a pocket dimension where everything is a size of a damned planet!

    Talk about larger than life for these bosses. Also looking forward to Ari's list next month.
    15. I chose the Dream Team one because I fought it. If there's a way to buy Bowser's Fury by itself show me the path to it.
    14. More of a stealth section than a boss... but it does count.
    13. Not the best boss of this game in my opinion but it does leave an impression
    12. No surprise given Ari's opinions (Also I love the Avalugg fight from legends too)
    11. Another one that isn't a surprise. Also preparing for a joke later on.
    10. In my opinion, the best boss of this game
    9. Hello Monster Hunter Jormangandr!
    8. I'm getting this game when it's on sale on Steam! This is a look to the future for Sonic!
    7. Thank you! Finally Excellus is acknowledged!
    6. Hello Hades, please don't hurt me!
    5. Another unsurprising pick, it ticks off the largest and most depressing well
    4. Maybe Final Fantasy XIV can rival this boss if it brings back a boss like Deathwing
    3. No mention of the upgraded fight of that game... maybe it's because it ends with normal kirby going up against something it's size.
    2. Your final boss is the size of a planet? Well our first boss is the size of a planet!
    1. Not if... but when... I hope we get something similar in the future of the franchise

    I'm gonna leave a note here for Grigori, from Dragon's Dogma. Sure, Ur-dragon is bigger, but the fight against the "final" boss has a much better sense of scale.
    However, talking about Capcom, I'm gonna go WAY back to my first "hoh crap, this guy is BIG !" moment : the King of Dragons ! A 2.5D beat them up that played mostly in arcade cabinets...
    The final boss, Gildiss, is a giant red dragon; when you enter his lair, the fight occurs on top of his hoard. on screen you can only fit his head and his claw, looming over you, ready to try a grab. Once in a while, Gildiss will take of, change side and fly down, it was early arcade, not a cinematic experience... BUT ! Whenever he does this, your character is pushed to the other end of the screen, no amount of walking, running or otherwise will let you stay where his head is going to land.
    You are tiny, and the wingflaps of this guy alone toss you like a ragdoll ! For all the bigness and siziness of other bosses, few ACTUALLY knock you around by virtue of merely being there !!! Your protagonist always seem to keep balance and control despite continent sized adversaries literaly weighing on them, not Gildiss...

    One thing I don't think Josh really mentioned about Laviante, which is fair considering Josh's countdowns isn't supposed to go over lore of the games themselves and only the bosses, is that the fact that there are 16 hunters, that Laviante is a 16 PERSON HUNT, is a huge deal both lorewise and by gameplay standards. The monster hunter series has a specific in lore rule about no more than 4 hunters to a hunt due to an incident where a monster hunt with 5 hunters ended badly with only 4 hunters coming back. After that it was deemed bad luck to have more than 4 hunters to a hunt... and they broke that rule for Laviante
    Edit: made correction

    Malus terrified me for a couple of reasons when I fought him. He's the only human Colossus and he doesn't walk, but rather is forced to stand there, losing over you and following you with an almost sentient intelligence. Also, when you view the dead colossi at the end of the game, he's the only one that doesn't crumble to a pile of rubble...he still stands in the limp position he died in
    Also, on a flipside, the largest Colossus, Phalanx, is the only Colossus that is not hostile towards you and simply awakens as it is made to by your presence with the sword. Realizing that was when I really started to wonder if I was the hero

    While I am not disagreeing with the countdown in anyway, Chakra Vardin is a great fight for a different reason.
    Especially when you consider the size.
    His final phase is basically an example of what I call Frieza Syndrome.
    Where are the previous forms are getting bigger and more intimidating and then the final form happens and there’s a smaller, slimmer, and sleeker in comparison.
    As if to say, all that power is now condensed, and that much more deadly.
    So the fact that the final boss is the same size as your own character tells you that he’s gonna be far tougher.

    The gist of it is that you're SpongeBob inside the Chum Bucket fighting an oversized version of himself. When I started Xenoblade 3, I knew the colonies had giant mechs as bases. I did not expect when I got to Colony Lambda that I would FIGHT one of those giant mechs. There are some regular enemies that reach a similar size, but the knowledge that you're fighting an entire enemy battle station hits hard. It's only about halfway through the game, so it's not too difficult, but it definitely left an impression. I forget the name of the boss, but a similar situation happened towards the end of Xenoblade X, only with a bigger enemy, you have mechs of your own, and the fight starts in the sky.

    I think these types of bosses are usually the best because of their concepts. Everyone of course likes succeeding in games and likes seeing the main character overcome the odds, so make the victory feel all the more deserving by literally making the obstacle larger then life. Not to mention these types of bosses are just structured so well. You either have to run or hide from them like Scarecrow, maneuver literally all around them by climbing on their body to damage them like Jubilas and Cronos, or get on even footing and give them a taste of their own medicine by making them feel small compared to you like the metal gears or titans in Sonic Frontiers. God these types of bosses are just so good and innovative and are always my favorites.

    Having a fondness for mecha games, it can be imposing when your giant 40-foot mech is pitted against another mech that is SO giant that it makes yours look like the size of a normal human. Such as the colossal 'totally not Big Zam' mean green machine used by dictator Venkar Amon in the final battle of Metal Warriors. A multi-phase gauntlet that has you taking out its deadly flail arm, its missile launcher arm, its front torso plating to expose the power core within, and then its hoverjets until it's reduced to mindlessly stomping around and releasing drones to kill you. Also blowing it up somehow doesn't kill Amon; he races you to escape the exploding base. The fight can be annoyingly luck-dependent, but it's satisfying to finally claim a victory.

    I have to give Jergingha from The Wonderful 101 a shoutout, just because of the escalation in sheer _scale_ you're dealing with.
    Just like Pikmin, you're a crowd of costumed heroes running around fighting robots many times your size. The first mega-moon you face is practically as big as a house, and you're like mice running around its feet. Then a giant robot bursts through the ground and you have to fight it on top of its arms like ants... and that's only a mid-stage hazard (it becomes a proper boss later). Things just escalate and escalate and _escalate_ until you're fighting Jergingha, a living fortress the size of a *planet* . And that aforementioned giant robot hazard/boss? You're now piloting an army of those to face Jergingha, and they're about as small compared to Jergingha as your minute human self is compared to _them_ .
    The scale is _ludicrous_ .
