    Summary:
    - Doulingo is not enough for learning a language. Nevertheless, it is a very helpful way to build the habit of your target language.
    - Do not quit Doulingo even if you find yourself able to speak that language. Since, it will open your eyes to some complex structures sentences never will come to your mind simply.
    - Do not focus on the meaning of the sentence if it was strange sometimes. Furthermore, try to change it to be close to the situation you need, and even better try to imagine what is happening? Because this will stick the meaning deeply in your brain.
    - Encourage others to think of you as an expert of that language so that will create a positive image of you which in turn will lead to motivate you when things go wrong.

I have been using Duolingo for a few years now and would say I'm between level B1 and B2 in Spanish. I do appreciate that I seriously need other methods as I cannot learn proper grammar. I watch Spanish language programmes, listen to Spanish bands etc just to hear the sound of the vocabulary, but I wouldn't have any idea at all if it wasn't for initially using the app. Yes, it's very frustrating, especially when they 'change for the better', removing everything that you loved about it, but it's a free way to learn and can be fun!

Duolingo isn't a waste of time. It's more of a starting point. I competed a lot of the basics of Duolingo and was able to uphold a Spanish conversation, after about 6-8 weeks of consecutive learning. I would say as small as 20 minutes/day * 7 is enough to understand some sentences.
After Duolingo I ended up moving to Discord Spanish servers, and just started communicating in Spanish. When I didn't know a word I simply looked up its definition. Real hands on communication with the language is great. And don't worry if you feel! Natives appreciate your effort for attempting to speak their language, unless your learning English - Then most of us just get bothered lol.

Well actually no, that wouldn't fix it, because like I said, the camera's audio was broken, which meant that it was CRAZY noisy. So this volume that you hear was already pumped up about 10dB and then de-noised as much as physically possible without getting that horrible underwater effect.
What's more, using Audacity to sort out problems like this (which no longer exist anyway, have you watched any of my videos made since April?) adds about an hour to the whole process, which results in hours I don't have.
What annoys me about this video is that it's my 2nd most viewed, and no one seems to take into account the fact that about 40 of my 50 videos about language learning have almost perfect audio... people choose this one from February to tell me how I should do my audio...

I took french 1 and 2 in middle school. I was only taking it because I knew in high school, i could finally take a japanese class (i went to a huge high school that offered Japanese, and i had been teaching myself Japanese for 3 years by then, and was excited to take a real class and was fully prepared to leave French) so i ditched it the second I went into high school. Freshman year, I did just that. I went into japanese instead. My family ended up moving across the country my sophomore year and I couldn’t take a japanese class anymore, so i switched into my new high school’s mandarin program, and I really hate it. I’ve spent two years in Mandarin at this new school and I really don’t like it, and I heard the French program was good. In an effort to not have to retake French 1 and 2 in senior year of highschool, i’m teaching myself French this summer. Wish me luck...

105 straight days through the japanese course and i can say that i agree with all of the points youve said. duolingo has a lot of shortcomings even if you extensively read through the tips cause they are very poor when it comes to a lot of things especially grammar. and the wierd sentences are a good thing frankly since they test you in a pop quiz sort of way like "sumimasen watashi wa ringo desu" which means "excuse me i am an apple". but what i like about it the most is how it made get used to the kanji (chinese characters) system how they give it to you bit by bit until all of the sentences has kanji in them.
but the main thing for me watching this video was if i should buy the plus or not and your answer was enough for me. Thank you.

Got to day 30 when i realized duolingo wasnt that good, lingodeer, busuu, babbel... all better and more complete.
Having said that though, duolingo does have some pretty rare languages. (hawaiin for example)... or klingon... if thats your thing.
I learned more in a week of busuu then a month of duolingo.
(duolingo can be used 100% free though, so there is that...) but with duolingo you REALLY need to take the stuff its giving you out into other methods to practice. (oh and the new heart system screws you over)

    Two best things about Duolingo:
    1. It's the best springboard for learning almost any language and get you actually believing you can learn any language - for free.
    and
    2. It's a great accountability tool for you to touch base with daily once you're moving on to more in-depth learning or just to pull you back in to language learning if you lapsed.
I had actually lapsed on learning Spanish until very recently, and jumping back in to Duolingo after about a year, I was amazed at just how much Spanish I still remembered! It's spurred me to get back in to learning the language, and take it even more seriously. That's great!

I am glad you are balanced here. You are saying that Duolingo is useful up to a point, but quite limited. I have used Duolingo for a total of 200 days. It does help reinforce what I am learning through both Buusu and Memrise. I am not using only Duolingo. At some point, I will drop Memrise and use Memrise and Bussu plus maybe Yabla. Duolingo is helping me think more in French and Spanish. You are correct that Duolingo is trying to teach you to think in patterns and understand the grammar through the patterns you encounter. I also do repeat the sentences out loud in many cases.

I think Duolingo is like a backbone to the language. It can get you fluent only because when you’re more advanced you will be tempted to look in language books and watch TH-cam videos spoken in the language you’re learning. So Duolingo won’t get you fluent on its own but if you enjoy it you’ll look at other sources of the language in addition to Duolingo. So I guess it works. It’s like if you do a degree in say Biology you will not get a very high grade if you only revise what you were taught in lectures. You need to read around the subject and dig deeper yourself then you can supplement the basic learning and get a good grade.

another great thing about Duolingo is that the weirder the sentence is, the more I will remember it, the more I'll learn from it. I'm currently studying Norwegian and there are a LOT of sentences that come from song lyrics, movie quotes or that are just outright hilarious like "my uncles are bears". I don't know if the people who developed these courses do it on purpose, but I have the feeling that using humour is helping.

Duolingo seems to work fine for me at least.... It is certainly a bit slow, but, for me, that’s ok. I definitely wouldn’t recommend duolingo by itself; then it’s pretty much useless, but, if you’re actively consuming media of that language and culture, duolingo can be good paired with that. I wouldn’t rely on either of those completely, and maybe I’ll have to move on to something better in the future, but those two things paired together seem just fine for a slower paced language learning experience. It’s easy to do alongside work, (or school, in my case) and just having a set time and a commitment to practice even just a little bit every day helps. And, as stated in the video, viewing yourself as a speaker/learner (depending on your level) of the language is the key thing here. I have definitely learned more simply by listening/reading than I have from duolingo, but, without it, I probably wouldn’t have learned anything at all. Its a good basis and keeps you motivated, and that’s what’s important.

I learn a ton by using netflx i have both the spoken words in spanish and subtitles in spanish. I used to have to pause a ton but now I can typically just watch through depending on how much slang there is. Also, the duolingo podcast if you are learning Spanish is amazing. They have a French one as well but I no zero French so have never listened. I have used the Duolingo app but learning that way bores the shit out of me. I just do not like it. I do not use any programs just speaking with friends, tv, and then books and youtube and books again for grammar. I recently got an online tutor to speak more and get corrected and we talk about 90% in spanish.
