It was common in Sweden to make upp your last name with your fathers firet name and ad son or dotter, thats son and daughter. So if the dads name is for example Anders the kids last name would be Andersson if it's a boy and Andersdotter if it's a girl. The reason there are very few names ending with daughter is that when girls married they took the husbands last name. It's still posible to use this today in Sweden instead of just taking the family name as you last name.

1:29 - "I was actually pretty good at that one", "She's being humble, she was essentially the best"
Uh... In Sweden that doesn't fly under "humble". That's "kaxig". Humble is, to a Swede, "I did ok, I could have done better".

@@chronic2023 - Which is why I explained it. I don't have to explain the obvious. It's just annoying when people do that, don't you think? Like explaining that she's an American, not a Swede.
But in the Swedish culture, which she took part in, which she wanted to get to know better, that isn't humble. That's "kaxig" (cocky).

      I think it's a generational thing.
I love the show, but if you belong to the younger generation you most likely don't even know that the show exists.
I don't think Swedes in general have particularly strong relations or feelings to America, unless they have contact with relatives or friends over there.
And the cultural and political divide in the US is hard to watch from Sweden...
I would say that the political spectrum in the Swedish parliament covers the left half of Democratic congressmen and nothing from the Republican party.
And that is not a positive comparison for the US.
Even if we have enough pluralism in our Swedish political party system to have 8 different parties represented, voters still see no reason to support parties or policies further to the right of center Democrats.
In a political poll before the recent US election, 80% of Swedish voters would have voted for Harris...

I've only watched one season of the show, but in that one, they all get to see at least one relative in the very first episode. Then, as they get eliminated, they get a nice moment alone with the host and a bunch of information about their family history and ancestors who emigrated. I'm pretty sure they get the contact information to their relatives off-screen as well. I have a really hard time imagining the production team would gatekeep the knowledge from the Americans after they're no longer on the show, haha.

And sure, that is simply common for many with known Swedish ancestry. As an American living in Sweden I find this show to be so ridiculous! It’s an embarrassment to me to see those unhinged emotional children broadcast all over sweden and that gives Swedes the impression that all Americans are like that! That show has been on for a few years and all the contestants are over emotional and stupid! Just where do they find these people or is it the producers want to present Americans as over emotional, child like and ignorant? I guess that is the way TV programs are going today just like in the USA, to mindless people!

    • @abrakkehakka1357
      @abrakkehakka1357 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

As a Swede that has lived in the US for many years, I do not agree with you. Sure, some of the competitions are perhaps silly. But I don’t agree with your analyses: I don’t think it portrays Americans as “unhinged emotional children”… At least not more than any Swedish reality show I have watched with Swedes as contestants portrays those as “unhinged emotional children”! And not more than any American reality show of those I have watched portrays Americans as “unhinged emotional children”. I mean, any reality show portraying any contestants as boring Swedes wouldn’t make many turn in the television. I rather find them excited about their ancestry and (one of) the nation(s) they originate from. Showing emotions can be good, and something I would argue we Swedes are a little bit too poor at doing. Perhaps you’re becoming ‘Swedenized’, while I might have become a bit Americanized. 😊

Although one can always have opinions on the current government/parliamentary majority, it is not even close to being as divided as in the US. And hardly anyone holds the idea that public broadcasting media (or any common media, besides the usual trolling aspects of social media) is actively destroying Sweden and its culture. Although I don’t give much for shows like “paradise hotel” and similar-or “influensers”-I don’t find they actually influence too many.
Swedes are quite curious too and “widens their views”? Some emigrated, and some at least end up watching news from Minnesota 😊.
I find this one of the better reality shows. One may perhaps think a few of the things they have to compete in, is silly. If anything, it is one of the shows revealing some of the Swedish traditions and history, although arguably “skimming the surface”.
