If music is good, it's good. I don't care if it takes zero effort. I don't listen to songs because they were handcrafted in a cave for six months, I listen because they are pleasing to my ear.
I think the fundamental tenet of all criticism is that you can improve your opinion by knowing more about it (although of course it isn't mathematics, it's still subjective), and also that good art will only get better by having that knowledge or context. The fact that it uncreatively edits pieces is only an incidental side-product of the process. The whole album's intention was to create a feeling that many people share: an affection for and contentment with American mediocrity like 80s-90s malls, tacky sexy neosoul, smooth jazz, 90s suburban simplicity, idleness, gas stations at night with muffled music playing in background. If its main intention was to innovatively change the samples, then it would lose the more important purpose of creating that ambiance. It embraces the lackluster side of America and corporatism, which is the ultimate source of happiness because you can never be disappointed with such low expectations. If vaporwave by chance is very new and inspired, fine; but it never was its main reason. It wants to distill the essence of its songs, at least the perceived essence by many who like ordinariness.
Jim Hepburn Perceived essence, that's the key word here. I bet most people listening to this are too young to remember what living in the 80s really was about. Seems like some younger people seem to have a strange perception of that decade.
+The Great Agitator I'm 32 and I grew up with soft 80's adult contemporary hits squawking thru the intercom speakers of malls, cafeterias, and waiting rooms. staring at a wall covered in 8.5x11 clipart advertisements, nothing to do but endure the boredom of this eternal 40-minute existence - only made worse by the soothing and somewhat depressing smooth jazzy sax over a sterile beat. I didn't know who made those songs, and I don't know who made these songs... hey, I don't actually know who stole them either. but none of that matters. why should it matter?
It all depends on the imagery and feelings you get from the music really. For me I get a nostalgic vibe that puts me in the back of my parent's car in the 90s driving through a city at night; that safe and relaxing feeling you get. But at the same time there's a futuristic sound to it, almost like something Spike Spiegel would listen to while cruising through space in Cowboy Bebop. But then the Cowboy Bebop imagery is also nostalgic, making the overall sensation from the music seem harmonious.
"The people who are most likely to be impressed by this album are those who have not heard the original songs" 100% correct and probably why i like the album so much, lol
Although I agree that Macintosh Plus isn't really creating anything brand new, I also think that was one of the main points of the Floral Shoppe. In my opinion it is kind of emphasizing the emotional emptiness of digital space in a stylized manner which is why it's both eerie and unenjoyable at times. I think the lack of new content created in this album is a way of emphasizing the (arguable) idea that nothing is truly original anymore. It does this by appropriating music that came before Floral Shoppe. Perhaps it is intentionally "soulless" but then again, I could be reading way to far into this. I enjoy parts of this album though. Its unlike other music I have ever heard before which really interests me, even if I find it distasteful once in a while.
+Graham Jefferson I totally agree, honestly. Vaporwave is meant to be enjoyed then forgotten, like background music to your life. There's other vaporwave I like way more than Macintosh Plus though, like Android Apartment, Luxury Elite, and Dante Mars Ajeto!. I know that Flower Shoppe is the 'iconic' vaporwave album, but there's a lot better stuff out there.
I think that a lot of the focus on the technical aspects of the album missed the point. It might be because I'm coming from a place of having lived through the era of a lot of that music, but there's a feeling of melancholic nostalgia laid on top of it for me. That the tracks aren't as manipulated and twisted into something new doesn't feel like that's even the point - to me, this feels like a really fine-tuned piece of work. If you find the sweet spot, why push it further just to push it? The essence of "vaporwave" comes through more in this, for me, than anything else. This album embodies it for me. That's just my feeling on the matter. We all have our own interpretations.

If you haven't heard them, check out 'Haircuts for Men' and 'Windows 96 '. Whether they're vaporwave or something else altogether, who knows, but they're in the same ... well, the same odd corner of the universe as Macintosh/Vektroid.
I'd adjust it to 7 myself. while I agree that her editing prowess really didn't always come into it's own, that isn't a reason to pull so many points, we are talking objective quality here, not the amount of effort put in, and while track 2 was carried by the quality of the source material, that doesn't necessarily mean it is bad.
***** Not only is it not very engaging, but it's just straight up lazy sounding. I don't care how 'tragically nostalgic' a vaporwave song may sound to you, at its core each song could have very well been made in under a day. There's nothing to it, it feels like it lacks substance and heart. I'm having a really hard time telling apart the trolls from genuine opinions on the subject of vaporwave. When someone takes a sample and manipulates it (time stretched, pitched, filtered, reversed, chopped up, ect.) and then layers on their own melodies and whatnot to the point where it becomes something entirely new, THAT's interesting. That is engaging and not JUST simply because its complex, but because the amount of work put into creating it more often than not means that the artist was more invested in it. It feels like genuine expression and more unique. It's a part of the ARTIST because we can tell he was creating the song to tell a story and convey a feeling. Not that vaporwave doesn't do that of course, but everything about vaporwave seems to be about how 'nostalgic' shit was. That's it. That's basically the extent of every vaporwave's emotional value, whereis any other genre can express a multitude of emotions and story's while also being musically interesting. I'm all for sample-based music, I play around with it a lot myself, but this kind of stuff seems to me like more of just some experimental idea that got way too popular for its own good. It's just saying "Hey remember the 90's and old Windows PC's? That was nice" over and over again with NOTHING unique added by the artist itself. It's entirely about the listener, and part of me does respect that in terms of an artistic statement or whatever, but cultivating and entire genre from it is a little ridiculous and don't try and sit there and tell me that it's a "fined tuned piece of work" like the other guy in the comments was saying, at that point you're basically just lying.
Cal loves AOR, so I think he loves this album. Also, post-irony isn't really a term. It's just something I said to explain that people used to love some of this music ironically. It was listened to BECAUSE it was cheezy; however, some artists who are now embracing these formerly "cheesy" aesthetics are now being taken very seriously.
It is 2024 and vaporwave still has s beating heart in haunted malls. Sad it got such a low score but amazed that this is from 2012 - Fantano really has had his pulse on the culture.
Anthony, I think the opening track was the best track on the album! It's got this type of slowly building up, hypnotic, consuming feel that I've never felt from anything else before. The croons make that song, and it's done spectacularly. Anthony you need to give the first track a second, or fifth chance because it took awhile for me to understand what was going on. I fucking love the first track and a few other tracks. The rest of the album is okay.
This artist is honestly really good. I love the way it sounds. It makes me feel relaxed and just away from life. This kind of music really helps with stress.
in 2021, vaporwave is still around. artists are still releasing cassettes and vinyls on bandcamp. i still listen to it almost daily. at this point in the genre's life, It's something i can see evolving and growing over a long span. for us, vaporwave came from the fading of the 80's and 90's and it's starting to evolve into 00's style. for future generations, they'll look at the '10's and 20's as source material.
Wait so Floral shoppe wasn't made by some japanese guy in like 1998 and some guy just so happened to have a cd he made and put it on youtube? How was I supposed to guess that this was recently made?

xxxViceroyxxx you only watched 25 seconds of the video and are completely fixated on the score rather than the content of the review so I'm not really sure what I can say to someone who can't be arsed to hear a dissenting opinion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Negativland is fantastic!
I L♥VE vaporwave i love the way it makes me feel..

I never liked this album that much, until I copied the whole thing onto a cassette and listened to it in my car.
This is now one of my favourite albums.

Backhand Things no memes and culture go hand in hand people who are looking for (vaporwave for example) are looking for something specific, people who are looking for memes look for anything of even slight relevance
beth h that might have been the gayest comment ever
am i wrong?
I actually really like the opening track
sorry dude, you cant feel art.

the whole way through this i was waiting for you to say the names of the tracks
If you haven't heard them, check out 'Haircuts for Men' and 'Windows 96 '. Whether they're vaporwave or something else altogether, who knows, but they're in the same ... well, the same odd corner of the universe as Macintosh/Vektroid.
Haircuts for men are sick
2017, vaporwave is still going

I'd adjust it to 7 myself. while I agree that her editing prowess really didn't always come into it's own, that isn't a reason to pull so many points, we are talking objective quality here, not the amount of effort put in, and while track 2 was carried by the quality of the source material, that doesn't necessarily mean it is bad.
I love this album. I mean the sampling isn't always complex but Daft Punk does the same type of stuff
***** What the fuck makes Daft Punks Sampling "right" and Ramona/Macintosh Plus's "wrong?"
Glider4 spot the idiot
Glider4 nah jk its just b8 right
***** No. Well for one thing, Ramona does more than just slow down samples. Also something like 420 is very much like something Daft punk would do.

You wouldn't review Unknown Death 2002, but you reviewed this?
different context maybe
That's because it's complete shit.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Yeah, I love Yung Lean, but I do suppose his music isn't up to standards.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Yung lean borrows heavily from Vaporwave, especially in Unknown Death. Most people who like Lean like Vaporwave, and vice versa.
he did review it
my hands r bread
It will never die, it is made to last. I have never had heard a genre of music that makes me reminisce about a reality no one has lived
He used to call us needledrops what a melon lol
It is 2024 and vaporwave still has s beating heart in haunted malls. Sad it got such a low score but amazed that this is from 2012 - Fantano really has had his pulse on the culture.
It was a pretty big deal at the time already, did not require having a hand on the pulse

Its still alive. I love this genre so much.
It's been 10 years, this album is still celebrated and cherished. Vaporwave is also viewed as largely nostalgic. Very cool :)
it does. but maybe it could become a cool thing one day that's impressive from a performance perspective.
Yes

Now we have DDS' Darklife. How far this sound has come is insane.
This was sampled in The Unconscious Connection by NMESH
It doesn't matter how it was made, it only matters how it sounds.
This album is 90s department store music
listened to it...can't tell if its absolutely brilliant or garbage.
This artist is honestly really good. I love the way it sounds. It makes me feel relaxed and just away from life. This kind of music really helps with stress.

I feel that people who say words like "post-ironic" should never be taken seriously.
This is the funniest thing I have read allday, I heard this in the funniest voice.
It's funny because it's ironic
Yeah fuck people for using words that are right.
Can confirm, it's 2019 and vapor wave is a thing still
in 2021, vaporwave is still around. artists are still releasing cassettes and vinyls on bandcamp. i still listen to it almost daily. at this point in the genre's life, It's something i can see evolving and growing over a long span. for us, vaporwave came from the fading of the 80's and 90's and it's starting to evolve into 00's style. for future generations, they'll look at the '10's and 20's as source material.
Wait so Floral shoppe wasn't made by some japanese guy in like 1998 and some guy just so happened to have a cd he made and put it on youtube? How was I supposed to guess that this was recently made?
Vaporwave was literally my favourite genre in late 2018, and I can still vibe with it today very well, so it is indeed still a thing
