    Today's Video:
    XLIF (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) is a gentle, less invasive spinal fusion alternative for patients whose spinal condition requires a fusion to be fixed. This minimally invasive fusion method allows the surgeon to approach the spine from the side (lateral) of the patient rather than the front (anterior) or the back (posterior).
    Since it avoids traversing through the abdomen or cutting and disrupting the muscles of the back, XLIF allows for a less painful surgery with fewer traumas to the body than traditional open fusion surgery. The patient can recover in weeks instead of months required for traditional fusion techniques.

    I had this as a third back surgery after two failures. (The first almost killed me - pulmonary embolisms) I had an 8" incision on my left side. I think this one is working.

      Update Jan 2024: 3rd surgery helped but still many problems. Bone spurs from first and second surgery have left me with May Thurner syndrome so now I need to take blood thinners. Bone spurs still cause back ache so I'm still on a walker. Looking at fourth surgery to remove bone spurs on L4 and L5.

      @@randyrogers8568Good luck to you! I hope they're getting that taken care of for you. I'm about to have this surgery (my first back surgery at 44 years old) and am a little scared, but hopeful.

    I'm 44 and having this surgery next month. I wish someone would explain to me why my joints are breaking down if I don't have some form of systemic arthritis, but the specialist said it's not rheumatoid, "just" severe fibromyalgia and Dercum's disease. Except... Those don't break down joints. I don't get it.

      Don't give up trying to find a doctor to listen to you. I bet you DO have a systemic arthritis such as Ankylosing Spondylitis or Axiol Spondylosis. My husband had the same problem for YEARS until a doctor in MEXICO told him to check for AS - there is a gene test (Look for HLA-B27) - and lo-and-behold - he has it. Don't give up. Get second and third opinions. Research AS and go see a different Rheumatologist.

    how do they get to the patriot side to place the pedicle screws and rods?

      posterior side*

      @Drhlony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This actually needs to be done in two steps , the ones on the posterior side need their dedicated posterior incision, when minimal invasive approach is sought-after , then 4 separate small paravertebral incisions should be done. That leaves 5 incisions in total

      @@Deeznutz... I had and XLIF and a PLIF along with 2 laminectomies in April 2021. He utilized some of the bone from the laminectomies which he ground along with synthetic bone in the graft. It was a very successful surgery so far. But I had a world renowned surgery in a premier hosp in NYC. The skill of the surgeon is what matters the most followed by the hospital care. That’s what is most important before you go under the knife.
