I consider the Kinks "Golden era' every album from 1966 Face to Face to 1978's Misfits,..'then" comes the FM Radio rock "Power Pop era" which of course is Low Budget to the very good Word of Mouth ,.. the final albums are very spotty at best,..
Hi. Glad to see another Kinks fan enthusing over this album. I agree with almost everything you say in this review, except for "Young and Innocent Days", which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. From what you say about this album and Village Green Preservation Society, I believe you would appreciate "Percy", which is an album of songs that provided the soundtrack to the 1971 film of the same name. The film is about a man who has a penis transplant, and it is the penis, not the recipient of it that is called Percy, an appendage that is recognised by a series of female partners keen to establish that it is still as potent and satisfying as it was before the transplant. Despite the subject matter, which today would be treated with unsubtle coarseness, both the film and the songs are delicately handled, and like Arthur, contain some very beautiful and sensitive songs. This album seems to be little known on both sides of the Atlantic, so I mention it in case you haven't come across it. Very well worth a listen, and graced with some outstanding songs. As for the album Arthur, it is suffused with acerbic wit and irony, which most Americans miss completely. You did pick up on some of it though, so well done.
Thanks for the info on the TV show; I've been looking for that on youtube and now I know why I could never find it. For my money, "Mr. Churchill Says" is the weakest song.
I wanna ask you if you're familiar with Kinks compilations and which ones you recomend cause nowdays 60's Kinks regular albums on vinyl are kind of pricey. I know about Kinks Kronicles but I want to know which will be the best compilation for music from Face to Face to Percy. I just ordered one called: Lola, Percy and the Apeman comes Face to Face..which has a great selection from that era, almost complete albums
All original members of Fleetwood Mac were alive until Danny Kirwan passed away last year. ...and, actually, he was the 5th member so the original 4 are still with us. I'm not suggesting that reuniting them would be a smart idea though.
Australia is the weakest track, imo, because the second half is just a jam. As with the Beatles and the Stones, the Kinks weren't particularly good at noodling around.

Todo una maravillosa obra conceptual.
Thanks for the review. I'm going find my Arthur cd, and listen to it with fresh ears.

So Great. Beginning to end. Ranks in my all time top ten by anyone.
Better even than "Abbey Road." I love this album.
I just discover this jewel, I like every song.

10:32 Putting Tommy at the same height as The Wall seems insulting to me. The Wall hasn't got much of s plot but it's much deeper than The Who's one.
"Young and Innocent Days" the weakest song?
Let's discuss.
Otherwise, great review.
I love it but love the rest more.
sunguar I agree. Its not bad but I dont really like the style of the chor-like singing.
