      What on earth are you two talking about?! Either you didn't understand the video, or didn't understand my comment. Morgan, how are the farmers feeding the cranes causing their disappearance? And Asher, who is demonizing whom? What are you talking about?

      @morganolfursson2560 Very simplistic. There are more Red Crowned Cranes living outside of Japan than within Japan. Those living outside breed in Siberia, Northern China, and adjacent areas of Russia. They migrate to both Koreas and east central China for the winter.
      The bird's shown here are resident in Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido. Cranes subsist on fishes, amphibians, baby waterbirds, rodents, and insects as well as a wide range of plant tubers and seeds. None of these are available during most of the winter in Hokkaido, when the soil and water are usually frozen solid. By feeding them, the farmers have enabled these cranes to survive winters that they would be very hard pressed to survive otherwise.
      Cranes are traditional symbols of happiness, martial fidelity, and longevity throughout East Asia and in Buddhist and Hindu societies in SE and South Asia. The farmers in Hokkaido enable these cranes to survive the winter for these traditional reasons, even though the birds damage their crops during the growing season. Yes, by replacing wetlands with farmland, the farmers have drastically reduced potential breeding habitat for cranes and many other species of wildlife, but they have compensated for this even when it is against their economic interests to do so.
      American ranchers saved the American Bison by taking the last surviving herds under their protection after unrestrained mass slaughter that was aimed at starting the Plains Tribes into submission. Vegans should consider that ALL forms of agriculture that feed them destroy natural ecosystems and their inhabitants, and free range poultry and organic fertilizers also spread diseases of domestic animals to wildlife.

      Throughout history, birds have been viewed as animals of special value and have been ladened with meanings often derived from legends and stories that have survived over many generations. The Crane, existing in fifteen species which inhabit five continents, may conceivably be the oldest bird on earth; there is fossil proof that they existed over 60 million years ago. Greek and Roman myth tended to portray the dance of cranes as a love of joy and a celebration of life. The crane was usually considered to be a bird of Apollo, the sun god, who heralded in Spring and light.

      @bircruz555 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are fifteen species of crane in the world, six species in Africa. The Ethiopian Highlands have three of the species, and one of them inspired the Phoenix. Euripides speaks of Cepheus, king of Ethiopia, a son of Phoenix. The bird, the constellation of the same name and the human figures that personified them tell a fascinating tale, but it is not known outside of the region.

    Would this mean these birds will be a species reliant mostly on human handouts? Will they learn to become completely self reliant again or will handouts change their eating habits completely?

    • @nicothebootyliscous9003
      @nicothebootyliscous9003 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not sure. The narrator mentioned that they feed the cranes in the winter so they probably fend for themselves during the other seasons.

    • @retrovelcro

      Their behavior may adapt to expecting handouts, at least at that particular location in the video. We had a group of Canada Goose hang around in California for a few seasons instead of migrating when they normally would because of the change in climate. Part of my theory is that they had a much easier time just hanging around, easily eating the food people gave them. The need to look for food for themselves became scarce.

      @neemnoa303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a reason they almost went extinct and there's a reason there are still so few of them in the wild. It's not like all Japanese people care so much for conservation efforts and protecting wildlife. These few farmers happen to be an exception, thankfully.

      The Red Crowned Cranes are migratory birds that spread in north eastern Asia (China, Koreas, Japan, and far eastern Russia. Occasionally in Mongolia and Taiwan, too.) Apparently, there is one small group of resident cranes that stay in Hokkaido, Japan.
