Good to hear Pops is on the mend, be a few weeks before he can carry the big lenses though. Dont forget its a major operation, I was constantly reminded by the specialist nurses.

Hello Dan, So good to hear that Popps opp. went well. Just it time so he can enjoy the spring time. I hope he will be back out with out in time. (Just to show you how to use his kit:} ) I must say that I love the little dippers 50 years ago when I was at school I found a dippers nest and browed the schools camera a Zenth E (if my memory serves) with there telephoto lens a 135mm. Spent some time in there darkroom and that was the start of me taking images. Super video , thanks for taking the time to share.
Hi Dan. Good video and greetings to pops.I shoot dippers early morning -they tend to be more active and the lower light allows for slow shutter speed. I usually shoot 1/10 to 1/30 sec depending on the water flow. Prefer fully manual exposure based my previous experience. Use a bean bag and flip out screen to get really low positioning. Agree it makes a big difference. If you watch the bird activity they tend to freeze at the end of their dip. I shoot at that point using 20fps to ensure at least one sharp shot of the bird.
Thanks for sharing your experience on photographing Dippers that is some fantastic tips that I will definitely be trying out on my next trip to photograph them. I really like the idea of using a bean bag to get even lower. Cheers mate 👍🏻

Glad to hear pops is on the mend! Hopefully your gear will be repaired soon so you can give him back his once he's ready to get out and about! Those dippers were so accommodating. Excellent shots and vids. I was shooting Northern Shovelers this weekend...same issue with the bright chest feathers. I haven't tried changing the metering....usually just underexpose if possible by a bit.

@@stuartwillis great to hear, I had a similar issue last year and thankfully all was ok, then in December they found and removed an aggressive tumour, I’ve just recently had the results, it was benign, positive mental attitude kept me going and getting out with the camera, I look forward to seeing you out and about again soon 👍🏻

I was minded to try it on a forthcoming Kingfisher shoot but tried it on objects dropping into a tank of water first - results were far from encouraging!
Cheers Clive. I have experimented with auto capture but tbh I have not really been impressed with it, although I have not devoted enough time to it yet. The pre capture is great but I wish I could use it in RAW rather than jpeg. All the best for your upcoming kingfisher shoot 👍🏻
@@danwillis_photography Hi Dan - glad to hear Pops is on the mend - you cant keep an old stalwart down ye ken.I have been playing around with autocapture, and its been improved with FWV5 - it wouldn't really suit your style as its not an 'on the move' thing, but i am cultivating a few locations where it would be useful for me, as it will be like having another photographer there in a slightly different location to you (but in sight). Have done a couple of videos on autocapture where i explain the settings, i just need to plan an actual session where i can use it. Great video again Dan (I like the beard). I shall be going down to Millldale soon to catch up with them.

@@stuartwillis great to hear, I had a similar issue last year and thankfully all was ok, then in December they found and removed an aggressive tumour, I’ve just recently had the results, it was benign, positive mental attitude kept me going and getting out with the camera, I look forward to seeing you out and about again soon 👍🏻

Cheers Andy, the Dippers will definitely be about and it would be worth looking for them. The marked difference will be that they will not be tied to a specific location so may be more challenging to find 👍🏻

Looks like a great time of the year to be photographing the Dippers. Was that a Yellow Wagtail or a Grey Wagtail. It's been a long time since I saw these species. Good to hear Pops is on the mend!👍

I was minded to try it on a forthcoming Kingfisher shoot but tried it on objects dropping into a tank of water first - results were far from encouraging!

I have experimented with auto capture but tbh I have not really been impressed with it, although I have not devoted enough time to it yet. The pre capture is great but I wish I could use it in RAW rather than jpeg.

@@danwillis_photography Hi Dan - glad to hear Pops is on the mend - you cant keep an old stalwart down ye ken.I have been playing around with autocapture, and its been improved with FWV5 - it wouldn't really suit your style as its not an 'on the move' thing, but i am cultivating a few locations where it would be useful for me, as it will be like having another photographer there in a slightly different location to you (but in sight). Have done a couple of videos on autocapture where i explain the settings, i just need to plan an actual session where i can use it. Great video again Dan (I like the beard). I shall be going down to Millldale soon to catch up with them.
