After one of the most volatile and unpredictable travel years ever, I flew to Brazil in December of 2020. There, I linked up with my friends Guilherme and Rafa from Rio4Fun and Rio4Food for an epic road trip through the southern part of the country, beginning in São Paulo!
São Paulo is the most populous city in the entire southern and western hemispheres, with over 30 million people calling it home. The city’s cultural and culinary identity has been shaped by its significant Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Arab, and Jewish populations.

The diversity in the cuisine is evident throughout the city, from Mercado Municipal de São Paulo, where you can try everything from a pastel de bacalhau to a monstrous mortadella sandwich. And in the Liberdade neighborhood, you can find restaurants selling Japanese-inspired dishes like miso-marinated pork and beef, sake, and takoyaki.
Of course, a traditional breakfast of pão de queijo, pão na chapa, pastel de Belem, and sonho are a must, as is a stop at one of São Paulo’s many churrascarias for some authentic Brazilian barbecue.
Add in attractions like Estado Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho, Paulista Avenue, and Batman Alley, and you’ve got a nice amount of diverse things to explore in the city. But instead of me telling you all about it, let me show you my incredible 48 hours in São Paulo, Brazil!

"Living abroad, what I miss most about Brazilian food is the incredible variety and flavors! Açaí bowls are a daily craving, but oh, how I long for the cheesy goodness of Pão de Queijo paired with succulent Pernil or Pork. Feijão Tropeiro, Pastel, Coxinha de Frango with Catupiry, Biscoito de Polvilho - each bite a taste of home. And let's not forget the uniquely delicious Brazilian Hot Dogs, Torresmo, and hearty Carne de Panela. Brazilian cuisine truly holds a special place in my heart (and stomach)! Additionally, I also miss the tangy freshness of Vinagrete, the comforting indulgence of Feijoada, the simple yet satisfying Pão com Mortadela, and the crispy delight of Filé de Tilapia Frito with Limão Cravo from Minas Gerais."

Bom dia David: so you gave us two docs on Brazil; Curitibi and now Sao Paulo. The country is so big and beautiful and so much to see. As for the food, that's a lot of meat. Everything is so fresh. The color of the beef alone shows that it's probably grass fed cows. So much stuff to see and eat in the market; how do you choose? Truth be told, there is not a whole lot to say. Is there another one and did you meet the girl from Ipanema?🤔🤗🤣. Just kidding. Muito bom David.🇹🇹🇨🇦 Oh by the way, this is the third one. Just rechecked and you gave Rio de Janeiro earlier on.

I loved the comparison of Brickell Avenue and Faria Lima in São Paulo. I am Brazilian, never lived in São Paulo (grew up in Curitiba), but visited there multiple times for business and fun, and now I live in the United States, in San Francisco, California. But I had the opportunity to live in Miami, Brickell area, for a few months in 2020, between summer and fall. I was 100% remote at work (like most people back then). I was sharing an apartment at Brickell area with a friend. Then I couldn’t handle Miami lifestyle and returned to San Francisco (Miami is great for vacation, not for living, sorry).
When I say “comparing Brickell Avenue” with “Faria lima” is very precise, it’s because it is. Starting with: everything around is overpriced compared to the rest. I’m not going to put rent, since in Miami, without a car, living in Brickell is worth it. But bars, restaurants, etc… there’s the “Faria Lima” tax, that magically makes almost everything 20 to 30% more expensive. Restaurants, drinks and even groceries. Same thing in Brickell. Any bar in Brickell would charge 18 dollars + 20% included tip for cocktails that here in San Francisco (which is expensive as well) is like… 12 bucks. But even in Miami, if you go to the “normal” part of the city, you’d find “normal” prices. South beach is also expensive af, but I understand it’s a heavy touristic area. Brickell… they just have fun with the locals. Btw, the median household income in the Brickell isn’t as high as I would think for those prices. It’s 87k. San Francisco, median household income is 126k. And it’s cheaper to go out in SF.

Just one correction, sao paulo does not have "Caldo de Cana" with pineapple. We mix with a lot of fruits. There's a "street market" that takes place on "Pacaembu Stadium" some days of the week, and there you have more then 10 flavors mixed with the drink.
And I couldn't believe that they neither took you to Ibirapuera, which is our "Central Park" to a picnic nor to a Pizzaria. I've traveled over 12 countries, and besides a pizzeria from Rome, São Paulo pizza is the best
