Well it's not 'about a pound' now (May 2021): it's about £8 plus £6 delivery!! I've always used a nail but Steve's Small Engine just showed why its not reliable. Well, 1p vs £14 I know what my choice is.
Thanks Mick for all u do and have done for the small engine repair community in entertaining us and getting the special editions going for us. We all appreciate it very much
Mick fixes nicks. Excellent technique of sharpening lawn mower blades and balancing. Thanks for this basic but very important process. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to hear you say the blade is not supposed to be really sharp. I once overheard a greenskeeper collage tutor giving a lesson on blade sharpening and he had said that the blade should have a squared off edge in relation to the base of the blade... basically to sharpen it and then square off the sharp edge so it doesn't round off really fast. Everyone else on the Internet seems to think that razor sharp is the goal... they are not in the know 😅
A tip Mick from the OLD MAN at Eliminator: when i am sharpening a blade indoors i set up at backstop of body metal with magnets attached to the back side. When i grind the blade all the metallic particles stick to the body metal and help contain the abrasive bits in one area. Take the body metal frame and all to the bin, pull the magnets off and all the debris is removed sometimes it needs a light wipe with a rag because the body metal holds some of the magnetism. Blades are now being sharpened outside on a portable table with wheels and a vise and bench grinder attached.
Thanks Mick you just bend up some thin body metal to catch the grinding sparks, i built a base for ours with a hood and it really keep the debris off the workbench and tools when i was sharpening blades indoors.
The recommended balancer for a workshop is a Magna-Matic Mag1000 never known B/S recommend a nail to balance you learn something everyday . By the way been repairing horticultural machinery for nearly 30 years now .
That's a lot more work than I put into it and I get amazing results. I'm not saying this is wrong I'm just saying I'm sticking with how I've always done it. Thanks for the content. If you get a hat that says "I'm sexy and I mow it" I will buy one.
The more you do it with a flapper wheel and a hand grinder the better you get, I'm so good at it, I can tell how much I take off one side, and I usually take the same amount off the other, and it always is balanced, another good point is if you have to take to much off, you might unbalance it from front of the blade to the back, as well as side to side balance something to watch out for, if you do run into that problem just take a little off the back side of the blade till it balances from front to back...... Great job.
Hey Mick and other regular posters. What are your thoughts on puller tools to remove flywheels on push mowers? If you recommend them: what size puller would you suggest? I've seen a 75mm one but I guess that won't be large enough for a typical push mower flywheel right?
@@themowerman Thanks for the quick reply Mick, appreciate it. Up to now I’ve been using the taryl method of levering up using a pry bar and a sharp blow with a hammer and it works but I thought I’d invest in a puller. Do you use the air chisel in the same way I use the pry bar? To lever up the underside of the flywheel? Thanks
Another quick one if I may. Have you got any videos on straightening a bent crankshaft? I've thought about removing blade and boss then putting a scaffold pipe or similar over the shaft and levering it a bit. Would you recommend this method?
A very informative video Mick. I use the grinder and a nail. I grind them at an angle that will allow the grass to be sheared off and then hit the lifter. It’s a joinery thing fella. Any chance of a video on how to check if a small two stroke carb has had it? Brilliant channel fella, you should be on telly 👍🏼
cheers mick will do it might not be that old has ahonda engine on good winter project though keeps the old head sharp ,use it or loose it kindest regards eddy
I have a power devil electric mower about 12 yrs old, I want sharpen blade but it has a plastic nylon nut which has rounded off , I want to remove it ,would it turn anti clockwise like normal or clockwise to undo ?, I have tried both ways with water pump pliers but it is very tight and hardly moves, so I left it and used file to sharpen, but I want to do it your way in vid
Hello mick. I would like to let you into a secret that would earn you a bit of cash. Any plastic areas on a mower that are faded and scratched, rub some olive oil into the area and it will look like new. Please demonstrate it in a video
I also wear a dust mask, cause the powdered rust tastes nasty, and also a good thought to keep in mind, if you go through a patch of posion ivy or something like it, it's going to be on the blade, so when you clean the blade it will become dust, and if you get poison Ivy, you might get it all over you, just a thought I thought I'd share
YES I AM IN THE SAME BOAT HAS YOU ARE AND HAS YOU KNOW I SHARPEN BLADES AND BALANCE WITH A NAIL SOMETIMES . WITH THAT BALANECER YOU WAS USING CANT ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT . THE HOLE IN THE CENTRE IN THE BLADE IS OFF SET. THE BLADE YOU HAVE THERE IS FROM A ATCO PETROL MOWER
To many nicks in this video...😄 Good tutorial tho...I've been doing sort of wrong my blade gets one angle very much like a carpenter chisel....I've seen blades done arse ways where the angle is towards the lawn .have you ever seen that Mick ?
Well Mick I watched that all the way through and picked some tips, unsurprisingly I’ve been doing it totally wrong with putting a bevel on both sides . I knew the nail trick and I have seen your swively cone thing before .

Good video Mick! I use stone instead of sand paper discs. Take care brother!
Yeah a stone works ok.. I find the flappy discs give a better edge
Very helpful. All these years I've been doing it wrong 😂
No mate you have been doing it your way.. I just do it differently.. link in the comment section for a blade balance tool
Another great video - thank you buddy. Why do you prefer flapper over bench grinder?
For ease of use.. it does a good job as well

Hi mate.. you can get genuine ones to pull a flywheel.. of universal ones.. personality I use a air chisel.. does a better job. Hope that helps
