    Just completed installing mine and now have 70 miles on it so still taking it easy for a few more hundred miles... But I have to say, I am so glad I did it. It really makes a noticeable improvement.
    This is all I will be doing to the bike. No sense on going for big bore kit... this is not a bike to be searching for major performance improvements. There are other bikes for that. But this was just the additional push it needed for the bike to feel just right.

    Not sure you every got around to this, Nathan, I just did. Recommend it! Feels like a different bike! Spent four hours on the Himi today after having been careful with it since the install. The install, btw, wasn't easy. I'm a complete amateur so it felt daunting from the start, but I can't imagine there's more space to work with even if you're experienced... It's narrow and tight and complicated, but works! Anyway - I could really open the bike up in third, fourth and fifth gear today. It's got much more to give with the cam installed. Smooth and strong. Very cool.

    I had one fitted from the first batch. Does make a noticeable improvement. Just seems to make the bike 'right' I think the untouched engine is hampered by the emissions driven design. I can understand some people's reaction for fiddling for better this or that but that's the joy of biking for some and as Nathan says 200 quid for 20% improvement - it's tempting ( well was for me). My bike feels better with ever tweak ( and mile I do) Saturday I was out with my instructor as I'm doing the IAM and he was very impressed with both the looks and the performance. A bike we all know is not to be underestimated.

    hi and thank's for your video, the relay problem has been around on the interceptor as well since they brought the first ones in to the country but alot of the problems have been put down to all that white grease they smear on the connections in order to stop corrosion during storage and transportation by salt in sea air, it all should be cleaned off and it's not only the fuel pump, any of the connecting blocks that have white grease in them are susspect, i had a problem with the speedo on my interceptor acting like a windscreen wiper and it took me a while to find it but it was the multiplug in the headlamp covered in white grease that caused it, cleaned it off and it's fine now, i can understand why they do it, but if the grease is just grease and not specially designed for the purpose it will cause a resistance build up in the circuit and stop things working as electronic stuff works on a low voltage.

    I agree with your comments about tires. I recently came from an adventure bike rally. It seemed that everybody had proper dirt tires. I had the original tires. We were on single track, mud, creek crossing, dirt roads and gravel. My bike did very well but I did have a difficult time keeping up on the faster gravel sections. This wasn’t because I didn’t have enough power, it was because I didn’t have the same grip in the corners.

    I used the stock MT60 extensively while off roading in the desert in New Mexico, west of El Paso, Texas. Yes, not the best tire in the world, but as you said, I learned to work with it and respect its limits. This tire has decent traction while going straight, but turning on sand was very hard with it, I often fell because my front tire would wash off. I eventually managed to change my body position to give the front tire a slight better edge, and learned to ride the Himalayan in the sand. The bike itself did great, it was the tire that was disappointing me.

    Looking forward to your opinions once the cam is fitted. It seems many owners do the cam swap then change the exhaust system, add a booster plug, complete some airbox modifications, and mess around altering the TPS settings. More time and expense for something that just might make the bike feel a bit different, but not really any better?
    I'm sure I'm not the only one that bought their Himalayan knowing the power "limitation", but mine is just perfect as it is on the tracks around where I live, and on longer trips using well surfaced roads. Would a 20% power hike make the bike better for what I use it for? Maybe, or maybe not

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I won't go any further than the cam. This is a bit of an experiment to see if the cam on its own does give noticeable gain on its own without faffing around with all the other stuff. But as you say, you definitely don't need to play around with the performance at all if you're happy how it is.

    In the US, since our models are effectively a year behind, we definitely had Euro 4 equivalent bikes shipped out with bad relays. There are riders in India who claim that relays have been a consistent problem, but it definitely seems like more issues have been reported since the pandemic production era.
    My experience with the bad relay in my bike was that the fuel pump would prime in neutral, but not in gear. Perhaps since they upgraded the relay system in the Euro 5 models the symptoms of the problem are a bit different.

      Low grade petrol is accommodated by a low compression ratio - which is 9.5 to 1

    Thank's for an interesting vid.Nathan particularly, for me, the relay info. As for the cam well, i must admit i'm intrigued. I have had my bike 3 years and have got on with the power so far under many conditions of road, conditions and load and still love the thing :) so, unless you or someone else presented an unequivocal thumbs up for it, the jury is still out for me; as you said £200 for the cam plus other consumables (fitting it isn't an issue for me by the way as i'm well capable of doing the job so no other cost would be involved) is a lot of petrol or some tasty camping gear or, whatever. another point i bear in mind is, i have a very sweet running bike with no issues such as stalling and it's perfectly standard; it would be a shame if fitting the cam had any unintended negative effects. Cheers.

  • @dewipeach

    The claims are good on the TEC cam, you'd ridden a bike with it fitted, it's really the best option, has always been that in the quest for more power is a high lift cam, noise never makes you good faster, just sounds like it does... I know.. It's the volume of air in and gas out, so filter and exhaust helps. But is it by Design that the bike only goes so fast.. or down to emissions.. after all as a long stoke their going as large as big bore can go and limits are head an single In/Ex values.. the down fall is the pig in the room - Power/Weight, and weight is the issue.. Excel Rims laced in, Ali swing arm and frame parts... then it's making it something it's not and spending money.. I love mine, a BS4 for what it is and it does it well, as on the box, had it a box.. ;

      It's a good question with regards warranty. I suspect it probably could void the warranty as you're introducing an external part. New Cam = plus 5 bhp
    Weight of spare relay under seat minus 5bhp :😀

    ..........or you could sell the Enfield and buy a second hand, V-Strom 650. More reliable, 70hp, and a generally more capable machine.

      I rode with a chap along a 25 mile off road route through Death Valley in the heat of summer. I was on the Himalayan. He was on the Vstrom. With the heat and a bit of nerves he really struggled and it was getting a bit touch and go. I suggested we swapped bikes. He rode with confidence the rest of the way and we got out in one piece. I struggled on the Vstrom, the reason being that it's a road bike, with a snatchy throttle, firm road suspension and poor standing geometry. Also the engine doesn't suit trail work. They're chalk and cheese bikes to me, so a Vstrom would limit what I could do, whereas a touch more power on the Himalayan would take the heat out of the long distance riding give me a bit more overtaking squirt. But totally agree, if you were only riding on the road, then yes, a Vstrom 650 might be a better option.

      @@nathanthepostman Sort of agree with you. I was speaking from an English perspective where off roading is (no matter what they say) rare - there just isn't the open wilderness you find in the USA. That said, if I were doing a lot of off roading then I would probably go for a Honda CRF250.

      @@stevetaylor8698 Yeah for sure a 650 'Himalayan' would be massively popular I think, certainly in the West. I just hope they call it something else, and make an updated Himalayan that retains the features that make the current one so usable.

      I saw the dirty old spam doing the rounds again '650 Himalayan imminent.' I'd bet my new shiny cam that it's not happening and we get something far more up our dirt road chasing street. 650 twin lump would ruin it.

    Complete waste of time ALL these enhancements, just accept it for what it is and save your cash towards a second bike to do the fast stuff if that's your thing!

      I like to make progress. Sometimes I can't do that on the mighty Himalayan. A bit more 50mph - 65mph squirt would make me a bit happier when running late, which as you know I often am!
