Introducing the Grand Choir | GC | CM Berlin

An introduction to the Grand Choir (GC) of the Collegium Musicum Berlin (CM Berlin).

Every Tuesday evening, the Grand Choir, which bears this proud adjective by virtue of its sheer size of around 200 singers, rehearses.
Each semester, the choir prepares challenging works from different periods, with a wide dynamic range. The Grand Choir can easily compete with a full orchestra. The choice of programme is in the hands of the elected Members' Committee, on which both the orchestra and the choir are represented.
In addition to weekly rehearsals, there are one or two rehearsal weekends each term. The singers are motivated by the fact that, in addition to rehearsals, there is plenty of time for personal exchanges and interdisciplinary contacts. The concert tours are particularly helpful in this respect, as they offer not only intensive rehearsals, but also plenty of time for enjoyable get-togethers. In recent semesters the choir has travelled to Gdansk (2017), Dresden (2018) and Stralsund/Greifswald (2019).
The choir presents the results of its rehearsals in semester concerts, usually together with one of our orchestras in the Berlin Philharmonic.

Under the roof of Collegium Musicum Berlin, some 450 students and staff of Freie Universität and Technische Universität are gathered to follow their shared passion for music. With most of the musicians having no professional education in music, our two orchestras, two choirs and one big band take great pride in their high level of achievement.
