My name is Matt Estlea and I’m a Woodworker from Basingstoke, England. My aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years of TRAINING at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford, 5 years of experience WORKING at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke, and 3 years TEACHING both day classes and evening classes at Rycotewood Furniture Centre. What I love most about your videos is your humility. It’s something I have been increasingly frustrated with when watching mr sellers. Your emphasis on admitting your limitations and mistakes is what makes your videos so relatable and accessible.
You make using a saw and a chisel look so easy, it's nice to see you struggle at something. Thanks for all of the tutorials.
You got the process on the second ones. I am not good with the skew. Most of the time, the catches come from cutting above the center/middle of the tool. Spindle detail gouge is easier for an old bowl turner like me... I use a screw from the back side of the door for the pulls I make. Fairly simple to make a mandrill with the screw centered, then screw a blank on and turn.

There is always a catch!
Your handles or knobs came out great. They will look good on your router bit cabinet. I like that brown oak. We don’t have that wood in California. Your turning skills are improving greatly.
The final result looks great, and the errors are part of the learning process for all of us. Thanks for not editing them out! The book-matched end-grain will look lovely once the finish is applied to everything.
I can confirm that the bookmatched endgrain is proper sexy once finished...

Whoa! Magic Rainbow Pony Pen at 1:40. If we can't have a Jesus Pen (such a shame!) - or any other religious leader, for that matter - then this is a close-run next best choice... Well done!
Now you can put the 2 remaining pieces of brown oak up on the shelf with all the other pen turning blanks. Then you can practice with a skew chisel making 2 identical pens with a finish coat of CA glue.
Just make sure you drill the smaller hole first. Just in case and I know it's unlikely but you forget to change the drill bit.

Why don't you make a negative half template from thin plywood? That way you can make the pieces more alike.
That’s exactly what I was about to say. One of my best teachers in craftsmanship told me over and over again „always make a template“

Matthew likes weird pens. If I wanted to lessen the dome, I would have stuck the handle in a electric drill, and used sand paper.

To get the dome shape, use a spindle gouge with a sheer cut. You won’t get the catch like you did with the skew. Great work tho

How to match up two knobs to be the same. 1: turning bigger knob. 2: split knob down the middle and drill holes on each side. Voila. Matching door knobs that are flat against each other.Perhaps spaced the size of the door gap.
Maybe Matt as a training on making exact same things on the lathe you should consider making a chess set

Oh its gonna happen some day....
That could work, instead of using turning tools and getting a bunch of tearout you can just go at it with an angle grinder and a sanding disc. I have a 1200mm lathe I turn with, when I make small things I refine it lightly with an angle grinder and a flap disc. That would be funny to see though, try it out.
How about Parallam? I have never seen that stuff in the flesh, but it should make for interesting turned workpieces.
@@MattEstlea It would be cool to watch the experiment. Perhaps encase a block of it in epoxy? Could go really well, or it could blow up in your face. either way it would attract the OSB lovers/haters equally.

My skew is the Bain of my existence, and it will live in Hell before I give up, though I always regret. How else do we learn! Good going Matt.

That's too bad. It divides your attention to be both in front and behind the camera and perhaps contributed to the unfortunate slip of the skew chisel.
Still, the work turned out well.

The skew is an unforgiving mistress. From a work of art to fire wood in milliseconds, only light is faster

9:15 What happens ususally? Something (turning) plays "Catch me, if you can" with Matt.
If you spent more time on refining the grind on your skew you would get much better/easier results
Hey matt on most chucs you can take the jors off and there's the bit that they screw onto and you can often clamp small parts in there in stead of your ingenious drill stop solution 😉🤣🤙
Open ended spanners are great for setting diameters as theres no movement and rigid reference point.
