    I was expecting this film to be a lot worse than the first due to lots of comments about the franchise going downhill, but I still really liked this one! Was great seeing some more characterisation from the group and the stakes felt a lot higher than in the first. Enjoy :)

    They unfortunately deleted or took out some scenes of the "heart to heart" talks between Newt and Thomas, and Minho with Newt.You should check out some of the deleted scenes. They wanted to keep the action going, but we also need the emotional pull too.

    In the books it explains that they're named after historical figures: 'Thomas Edison' 'Newt - Isaac Newton' 'Aris- Aristotle' 'Alby- Albert Einstein' 'Mother Theresa 😁 i just loved that little touch 🙌🏻
    James Dashner did an amazing job with the books!

      Yes. So many reactors miss that, especially since George's name was emphasized in the first movie. It's quite interesting that Thomas reminded Brenda of George. Was George a Thomas-like precursor who paid the price? Something like John the Baptist? I wonder if the films originally intended to do more with George?

    We learn a number of things during "The Scorch Trials." We learn that the immunes can treat the Flare, but they can't cure it. The whole idea behind the Trials is to create something like engrams in the brain which would alter the brain's chemistry and thus the enzyme which is used as a treatment. The idea is that if the right combination of engrams is produced through the Trials, which are complex and terrifying puzzles to solve, a cure might be found. It's the trilogy's McGuffin, so you can't read too much into it, however. When Thomas and the Gladers arrive at Jansen's facility, none of the immunes is a cure to The Flare. At Jansen's facility, phase two begins. Phase two consists of virtual Trials which explains some of the headgear on the immunes. At the same time, the enzyme is being extracted directly from their brains. Presumably this is for efficacy testing as well as use in treatment.
    In our hero's adventure-journey, Theresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail Thomas. She doesn't tempt Thomas with sex, but with arguments both logical and emotional advocating WCKD's viewpoint. It's reasonable to suspect her from the very beginning. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival in the Glade is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. In the "Scorch Trials," she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of what he'd done. Thomas' drug-induced dream-vision at Marcus' party makes it clear Theresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD. Thomas obviously acted alone. The longer Theresa is in contact with Thomas through the first two films, the further she seems to move away from him. This begs the question of why Theresa was sent to the Glade. Note that Jansen says: "Theresa's always has had an appreciation of the greater good." In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious doubt about her? There are interesting parallels between Theresa and Thomas. Both Theresa and Thomas are betrayers. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Theresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many immunes it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He will sacrifice himself but not others.
    One wonders if after Thomas stung himself in the first film, he doesn't remember more than he lets on. He acts like he does. He seems to know why he was put into the Glade. Earlier, he told Newt and the others he didn't recognize Theresa, but we know he did. Very uncharacteristic of Thomas to lie. Does he have subconscious suspicions about Theresa and not want to give voice to them? Or is he afraid admitting he knows Theresa will make the Gladers more suspicious of him? In the second film, the purpose behind Thomas' questioning by Jansen may be to ascertain whether Thomas can be rehabilitated and brought back into the WCKD fold. Thomas clearly was a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Theresa apparently did. After Theresa's memory is restored, it's increasingly clear Theresa approves of WCKD and its means. She even begins subtly showing disgust or animosity towards Thomas. Her reaction as she looked at the handheld radio at Jorge's hold sealed the deal. She is going to betray Thomas. The only question was under what circumstances, although you might assume it'll happen when the maximal harm will be done.
    In "Scorch Trials" we discover why Thomas was put into the Glade. He'd betrayed WCKD to the Right Arm. Specifically, he informed the Right Arm about the locations of all WCKD's facilities. Presumably, Thomas was sentenced to the Glade in lieu of immediate death because he was an immune, and WCKD didn't want to "waste" his death. In other words, the prospective trauma his death might cause might enhance the efficacy of the remaining Gladers anti-Flare enzyme. His WCKD tag readout at Jorge's did say "To be killed." On the other hand, since Thomas was the best and brightest of the immunes, WCKD may have expected he'd serve as a catalyst for the gladers and bring the experiment to completion. That's certainly what happened. So, they may have intended to send him to the Glade all along, and he just made it easier for them. That said, it's clear from what both Jansen and Ava Paige say in the second film that they want Thomas back in WCKD. He clearly was important before the Glade, and his importance to WCKD may have increased afterwards because he did successfully solve the maze. What does Ava Paige say at the end of the first film: "Thomas continues to impress. He may be the key."
    There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Theresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel. Thomas, who had escaped, surrenders himself. This is really an act of desperation. He has a bomb, and he's trying to make a bargain with WCKD. He suspects WCKD wants him. This is confirmed by Jansen who says: "Where's Thomas?" He might not like Thomas at this point, but he wants him alive. Thomas threatens to blow himself up unless WCKD releases the immunes, but WCKD rejects his offer. Here's where Thomas being selfless to a fault hoists him onto the horns of a dilemma. If he kills himself, he accomplishes nothing. Yeah, he escapes WCKD, but he doesn't save the others. Saving the others is his goal. He doesn't care about himself. When the others indicate they are willing to die, too, to escape WCKD, Thomas has a tough choice to make. Does he kill them all. Again, yes, they escape WCKD, but Thomas really wants them to live and live free from WCKD. If he relents, then they are all under WCKD control. He doesn't want that, either. There is the dilemma. The choice should be the one that's the closest to his actual objective. That must be life, even if not optimal, under WCKD. While there's life, there's hope after all. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Thomas is inclining towards. It would have been a mistake for Thomas to kill them all. Theresa and Ava Paige plead with Thomas to relent. Ava Paige even tells him "Everything can go back to the way it was." In other words, Thomas can have his memory back and rejoin WCKD. She meant it, too, because Ava Paige was actually a foster mother for Thomas. The killing of Mary coupled with the counteroffer from Ava Paige was probably what was pushing Thomas towards blowing them all up. Thomas was probably tempted by the offer and was afraid he might accept it, ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου, Σατανᾶ. Who wouldn't want their life back? Fortunately, Jorge rescues Thomas from his dilemma.
    Of course, the tragic irony is that Ava Paige should have accepted Thomas' offer and let the other immunes go free.
    Notwithstanding Thomas, we see WCKD kills traitors.
    Also, Thomas' promise to Minho not to let him be strung-up like the immunes in Jansen's facility sets the stage for the final film and foreshadows Minho's fate. Note Winston says something similar. The theme also reoccurs in the third film.
    Newt's giving Winston the pistol foreshadows events in "The Death Cure." We see the deaths of his companions weighs heavily on Thomas, and he questions himself about his course of action.
    Betrayal figures in the "Maze Runner" trilogy. Thomas and Mary betray WCKD. Theresa betrays Thomas. Jorge betrays his crew. Barkley betrays Jorge. There's betrayal in the final film, too.
    Brenda's brother George was the George whose grave Thomas encountered in the maze. Thomas knows George is dead, but, naturally, doesn't tell Brenda.
    "Scorch Trials" is a great film and a very good sequel to "Maze Runner."

    You probably haven’t picked up on it yet but newt is the only one who calls Thomas “tommy”, in the book Thomas says “Yeah, but most people call me Thomas. Well, except Newt - he calls me Tommy.” James Dashner the author of the books considered making Thomas and Newt a couple but ultimately decided against it thinking a hetero couple would sell better despite the fact that after the books and movies were released most of the fans hopped on the Thomas and Newt ship *newtmas* bandwagon, and James had confirmed newt to be canonically gay.

      @@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF I think at the time the books were being written & released *2009*, James probably thought it would have been a risk to write a gay couple, due to the societal view of queer people at the time, not to mention that was the same time twilight, hunger games and divergent were all being released aswell and all 3 of those books were heavily focused on hetero relationships, I definitely think had the books been written now Thomas and Teresa would have been written as a sibling dynamic rather than a romantic one.

    these are some of my favorite books/movies!! the books go more in depth with some of the fascinating and multifaceted ethics of WICKED, teresa, thomas, and the right arm--I stand by the opinion that there are no real villains in this story, only protagonists/antagonists that oppose each other and destructive forces of nature that oppose everyone. the movies kind of make ava paige more explicitly "evil" but in the books she's a lot more morally gray and fascinating (to me at least.) and teresa gets a lot of hate from fans but honestly i love her as both a character and a foil to thomas. she and thomas are seeing the same world, but she sees all the people she could save by sacrificing some, and thomas sees all the people he can protect by letting the rest of the world die (since it's already on its way there.) it's just a very fascinating juxtaposition between the two worldviews and in the books it's a lot more complex and morally gray. I highly recommend reading the books if you ever get the chance not just because they're more complex, but because there are other books that were never adapted into movies that give so much additional context for the world and characters (such as the kill order and the fever code). love your reactions!!

      I prefer the films to the books, but I do like the books, too. The respective universes of the books and the films do differ significantly. Thomas in the books is not the same person as Thomas in the films etc. In fact, I think that's one reason why I prefer the films. Thomas in the films is a tragic hero who is very noble. That's not Thomas in the books at all.
      Then there is Theresa in the films. In our hero's adventure-journey, Theresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail him. However, she doesn't tempt Thomas through sex but by argument both logical and emotional. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. Or is that just the archetype working?
      In the second film, she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of what he'd done. It's clear Theresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD because only Thomas is taken by WCKD security. He tells her don't believe what they say about me. Thomas obviously acted alone. This begs the question of why Theresa was sent to the Glade. We can only guess at the reason in the films. In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious doubt about her?
      There are interesting parallels between Theresa and Thomas in the films. Both Theresa and Thomas are traitors. In fact, in their respective betrayals they even say some of the same things. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Theresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many young people it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He is willing to sacrifice himself but not others.
      The WCKD agenda begs the question of does the end justify the means, a principle often associated with totalitarianism, which is the central theme of the "Maze Runner" trilogy. The principle is part and parcel of consequentialism, a teleological theory that says whether an action is morally good or bad depends on its outcomes. The more good outcomes outnumber the bad, the better/more moral the action. Under this rubric if WCKD finds a cure, then WCKD is very good, indeed. But if it doesn't, well, then it's very evil.

    Another good action movie with a dystopian premise is "The Island" with Ewan McGregor. It's only one movie, but it had a unique idea.
    As for Dylan O'Brien, who plays Thomas, he did another movie with a bleak future called "Monsters". Both "Monsters" and "The Island" are entertaining and worth a watch.

      Indeed. The English word "crank" is cognate with the German word "krank" which means "sick," "diseased" etc. The English word kinda implies this as well. One of my minor, and I do mean minor, criticisms of the films is that they made the extreme cases of kranks rather like the clickers in "The Last of Us." That's getting within epsilon of zombie and not really what cranks are as I understand them. But I suppose they did that for cinematic reasons.

      People frequently complain because a film doesn't follow a book exactly. There are obvious reasons why this is rarely possible, and it's often not even desirable. This is probably especially true when it comes to Science Fiction. Books and films are two different art forms. There are different creative impulses at work in each. People need to understand the "Maze Runner" books and films as depicting two separate universes which, although inhabited by the same people facing similar challenges, evolve differently. They are going to diverge, and vive la difference! If all is done well, and the films were done very well, it doubles the fun.

      @@wilhelm-z4tdon't get me wrong, I love the films, but if u call them adaptations, then that's what they should be, not differ almost entirely from the books in such a drastic way, changing practically the story all together, then it's an original work (with the exclusion of the characters), not an adaptation

    I didn't read the other books but in fever code, there's only two mazes. The other one being Aris's with the girls like Newt's sister (Sonya) so maybe they built more in the 3 years. I haven't finnished fever code but I know the main plot of it so I'm not sure if there is more than two mazes or not, like I said I haven't read the other 4 books.

    Another one, I'm 99.999% sure that Teresea never lost her memory (they made her do an act and it was the same for Aris) so I'm not sure what they were actually doing in the scene where they 'restored her memory'

    • @wilhelm-z4t
      @wilhelm-z4t 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, if I remember rightly, that's the books. But I understand why you feel this way. Theresa was suspicious from the get-go for a number of reasons. She never betrayed WCKD, so her presence in the Glade is highly suspect in retrospect. It always seemed to me that Thomas had some subconscious suspicion about her early on in the Glade. However, I do think she also had her memory "wiped" or "disabled." Once it was restored, from that point forward in the second film, it's increasingly clear Theresa approves of WCKD and she absolutely will betray Thomas.
      You know, when Jansen was questioning Thomas about WCKD, I think he was attempting to ascertain whether Thomas also could be rehabilitated and brought back into the WCKD fold like Theresa. Thomas was a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Theresa apparently did. That would have been an interesting spin for sure. There are things Jansen and Ava say in the films that support this view.

      Okay, well, except for Minho, Frypan and maybe some of the kids from the other mazes. Is that fact all that crucial to understanding the action? Seems pretty minor.
      The thing that gets me is some reactors expecting some Gladers would necessarily have the same name as when Jansen is calling out names in the cafeteria. Their names were assigned by WCKD. Since they're all lab rats, WCKD would assign them all unique names. You want to be able to tell your lab rats apart. So, everyone would have a different name.

    crazy how she says ''im a doctor i swore an oath to find the cure'' doctors also swear to not hurt people

    • @wilhelm-z4t
      @wilhelm-z4t 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course, the Trials violate medical ethics for nonconsensual human experimentation. Medical doctors do, at least in the Western tradition, although too many seem rather lax nowadays in keeping it. That said, the problem with Dr. Ava Paige, Theresa and even Thomas, when he was a high-ranking WCKD official, was that they didn't consider the immunes as patients but as test subjects (lab rats). I could draw some relatively recent historical parallels, but I will refrain from doing so. I put Theresa and Thomas into this catagorisation because it seems clear they were also medical doctors despite being very young, but we know they're geniuses.
      The original oath went like this:
      I swear by Apollo the physician, and Aesculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation-to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this Art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation; and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others. I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves. Whatever, in connection with my professional practice or not, in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times! But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot!
      One madern version goes like this (sort of a variation on "The Golden Rule"):
      By all that I hold highest, I promise my patients competence, integrity, candor, personal commitment to their best interest, compassion, and absolute discretion, and confidentiality within the law.
      I shall do by my patients as I would be done by; shall obtain consultation whenever I or they desire; shall include them to the extent they wish in all important decisions; and shall minimize suffering whenever a cure cannot be obtained, understanding that a dignified death is an important goal in everyone’s life.
      I shall try to establish a friendly relationship with my patients and shall accept each one in a nonjudgmental manner, appreciating the validity and worth of different value systems and according to each person a full measure of human dignity.
      I shall charge only for my professional services and shall not profit financially in any other way as a result of the advice and care I render my patients.
      I shall provide advice and encouragement for my patients in their efforts to sustain their own health.
      I shall work with my profession to improve the quality of medical care and to improve the public health, but I shall not let any lesser public or professional consideration interfere with my primary commitment to provide the best and most appropriate care available to each of my patients.
      To the extent that I live by these precepts, I shall be a worthy physician.

    I was always confused in this movie... why does WCKD call the kids "the immune"? They are not immune. If they got bitten its over, they turn like everyone else. It was like this with the guy, it would've been the same with the girl. And the same with a person in the third movie.
    Also... why are there no kids? Like... younger kids? Its always teens. Wouldn't it make more sense for WCKD to make a baby farm? Dark i know, but would be more effective I think.

    • @propriov
      @propriov 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not all of them are immunes. WCKD put non-immunes in the mazes to study the differences in their brain activities.
      and, did you watch the last movie, the Death Cure? No reason to wonder where the younger kids are otherwise.
      Plus kids, before being prepared for harvest, have to go through stressful situations/ environments (that strengthen their antibodies) so WCKD needs the younger ones to be grown up in order to put them in the maze and thus harshly test them

      @@propriov yea i watched it but almost forgot it completely. I just remember that i didn't like it as much as the first two movies.
      Oh so maybe thats why Eris or so was already a week there and didn't get called because he wasn't one of the immunes? But wouldn't they just dispose of him right away? They would have no need for him anymore. Also that makes me wondering, how many were actually immune or just there for study in the maze? Albie, brow-guy, the one runner, the guy in this movie, at least one other person cuz it was mentioned and 3rd movie person got infected and turned/almost turned.

    • @propriov
      @propriov 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@moma5349I just think they called who gave the best results first, since they had to speed up the time to find the cure. Percentage-wise it might be a fifty-fifty.
      We must also take into consideration that the Flare, being a virus, can vary, adding another route of transmission (as will be implied by Ava Paige in the last movie) or maybe infecting even those who were immune to a previous version.

    • @leticia12
      @leticia12 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To answer some of your questions, in the books, if I'm not mistaken all the people in the maze were immune, except for that person in the 3rd movie. The ones that got infected by the Griever's sting were infected by a smaller dose of the Flare virus, one that the Creators could 'heal', but brought them their memories back. It was kind of like a weakened version, and it affected them, but didn't make them go as crazy as they could. They were still immune. In the books, Winston was also immune, and died in another way, which was changed in the movie. That person in the third movie was kind of like a 'control-subject' just to differentiate between the immunes and the non-immunes. Not everyone is immune, we have children/teens that can be infected, which is why they are looking for the immunes to 'harvest' them.
