Fasten your seatbelts for an extraordinary ride with guitar hero Eric Johnson. THIS is the DVD that fellow guitarists, wannabes and fans have been waiting and dying for since this show first aired in 1989. And for good reason: Johnson's playing has a way of connecting to fans of every guitar style while still eliciting raves from the likes of Carlos Santana, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and even country music legend Chet Atkins. "Guitar genius" is an easy phrase to throw around, but when it comes to blending fire and finesse, Eric Johnson has it all.
We should all reconize Mr. Tommy Taylor back there drumming away flawlessly too. I call him the 5 piece beast, no one plays with soul and feel like he does.
1:08 i love this line
And that response line is so nasty
The Incomparable Eric Johnston. No one compares to Eric Johnston. No one.
johnson
You are SO right. Nobody. He's where Hendrix was heading.
Shawn Lane, and maybe Holdsworth.
Holdsworth
@@mountainman8775 legendary but he’s a different beast
One remarkable fact about Eric is that he is essentially a '60's- '70's guitarist. Eric took things this far by playing within the rules which had been established by 1975. EJ is the valedictorian of pre-EVH rock guitar playing, who also happens to be better than all post EVH rock guitar players. In my opinion he dwarfs all of them.
Definitely up there with with best, a rare nexus of technical skill and taste.
Wow-very well put and couldnt agree more!
You're 100% right. I couldn't have worded it better.
Well said he definitely has that mentality.
He has all the technique in the world, but has otherworldly feel and tone
This DVD is a must own! i've watched so many times i can't count...great camera angles...
Me too. Highly recommend it.
Just like Hendrix, EJ has tons of soul, talent and is a master with his instrument.
you mean unlike hendrix
@@cholepriccee2069no.
I have always had a soft spot for this tune. He has much more complicated tunes, but this one just hits the spot! Probably my favorite tune of his.
This take of "Western Flyer" is just about as good as it'll ever get!! And what better way to start the song than with EJ's version of Jimi's "Foxy Lady" intro!!! One of my all-time favorite live cuts!!!
I love it when EJ just decides he's going to burn, still melodic. Thats why he's one the greats
Astounding. The Best. Beck, Morse, Santana, Clapton, Vai, Satch... They all worship him
Can't really describe this as anything other than it's just really fucking good :).
this has to be one of the coolest instrumentals i've ever heard
Was that a smile I saw from EJ at 2:17?
Great song and great tone from Austin's Mr. Johnson. I saw him at a club in Minneapolis in 1990 and I can tell you it was a borderline religious experience. Thanks, EJ.
There you go, that sound is probably the most unobtainable sound I've heard. Power valves all the way.
My favorite guitarist! I actually met EJ many moons ago around this period of time...right before he released Ah Via Musicom..his masterpiece! He never ceases to inspire me! I find his instructional DVDs very helpful! Especially "The Art of Guitar"! I admire his humility and his total commitment to his craft as a musician! He seems like he is constantly evolving and I like the fact that he pays tribute to those who inspired him! Well Eric...you inspire me! And you continue to do so!
it's great. he's one of my favorite guitarists. and a lot of technical and stylistic things that I have picked up from him have made me very versatile. one of the best guitarists ever no doubt.
Astonishing Majestic verse at 1:58
2018년 1월말.. 이쯤에서 듣는 이곡. Awesome song& play. Gotta see for awhile though. Love Eric Johnson music! 👍
he may be one of the greatest guitarists ever in my opinion but he also has a pretty crazy hairdo lol
I agree , he is crazy great on guitar
My fav... most versatile Guitarist in the world. Too bad many people believe Hendrix is the best :) Shows what they know
its like something from outer space, man!!
He has perfect hair. It's his hair that makes him so good.
Love this song, great stuff!!
Holy Shit that tone!
Tone to the bone!!!
It's very near perfectection. ❤ 😍
As far as electric guitar goes, I've had a few omg moments in my life. The first was when I heard Jeff Beck's Cause we've ended as bla bla bla in 1976, and Eric Johnson's Austin City Limits performances. After all these years I still suck at guitar compared to these two.
I know how you feel.I'm not into shredders but Beck and Johnson both wow me.Beck is so inventive and Eric is so fluid, such a command of note colors and the neck.
95% percent (likely way more than that) of folks who play with guitars kinda suck next to Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck!
Holy Sheet! I'm thinking there were at least a bazillion notes from 3:00 to 3:04!!
Sometimes silence is golden show respect and learn peace to all
Wow the major scale!
Great song! check it at 2:25 to 2:35
10 seconds of spine-tingling guitar playing!
You can buy it on Amazon, the whole thing that was on ACL plus.
Do you think EJ liked Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow?
He seldom lets go and makes some noise but 2:40 comes close
I do think he likes that but that was a nod to Hendrix all day
You are indeed correct!
3:55.. if I ever got that type of harmonic content out of my rig , I might let that chord ring for ten minutes!
I believe the song is "Western Flyer" from the CD of the same performance.
Actually it does. A person who uses a lot of legato does not pick every note like john petrucci, but rather most of the work is done with the left hand creating that smooth, flowy (i made that up) sound.
Nobody would believe me, but I'm pretty sure this is the reincarnation of George Frederick Handel.
Jimi paved the way for every one of the guys who came afterward.Don't dis Jimi.I'm sure EJ would concur.
legato for guitarists (mostly in a shred context) means something completely different than the legit music definition.
so you're both pretty much right, EJ does use alternate and hybrid picking extensively, but just because he attacks each individually doesn't make his playing staccato
I'm not sure that you know what legato means, because most of what he is playing he plays legato. And he is using much more than a pentatonic scale, a lot of his licks are based off minor (possibly harmonic minor) or modal scales.
0:53 Hendrix smiled
Hendrix gets all of the "mainstream" publicity. Eric got some fame in the early 90's when SRV, Danny Gatton, and other blues/rock guitarists were getting a lot of attention. There's a lot of players out there who put Hendrix to shame but most people will never hear them.
Mixolydian, of course, Dorian, Aeolian, and Phrygian... and damn it... I missed a bit of the Ionian. I guess it's 5 now.
@jaluman Hallelujah and amen.
2:29 - 2:34 ... OMG
Is that the MXR flanger/doubler on the dirty rythym amp?
😇🥰👽
the camera man should get a statue!
Drummers, when your uppity guitarist needs to be taken down a peg or two, have him/her watch this!! =D
Which notes did you have in mind?
@irvpav Yeah, I agree about the whole GC scene. I actually like Joe a lot though. I'd much rather listen to him than most other contemporary players.
Plus it's hard as fuck to play guitar when you're thoroughly blazed and have 400 micrograms of Blue Cheer coursing through your body.
Shows you don’t know jack about EJ-totally straight. And yeah I know this is an old comment but I had to point out how utterly asinine and idiotic it is
whats the name of this song
@rustyknight0303 When you can play the guitar as clean as EJ, you dont need to cover it up by an overwhelming amount of distortion.
Which album is this song from?
@ShipsAreBurned = Yngwie reference?
Does anyone know what amps he's playing out of? Are the Marshalls 50 or 100 watts?
This is before Eric switched to the 50 watt Marshalls. These are 85 watt Twins and 100 watt Marshalls
@rustyknight0303 Why do you insist at hating on players that are at least a thousand times better than you.. if you can even play at all?
incredible must listened lot of mahavishnu sounds like a violinist jerry goodman often smetimes like ian hammer that is real plaing not w.......g like someg3 stars
Picking doesn't have anything to do with whether his playing is legato or not. Legato is about notes flowing together.
You can't fit his playing into a genre, it's just EJ
Thats SO True man..Too bad..People Think Guitar Players such as Herman Li..Are The BEst...Lol..
hes the chris thile of the electric guitar
Yes, fantastiquissimo but is just me or is he always pushing the beat?
I prefer erics fuzz tones back then
Herman who?
Eric Johnson is NOT dead dude.... WTF are you talking about?
My god...
@hanksteelbranch absolutely Joe Bonamassa copies him almost note for note LOL
EVH I always hate that tapping shit you can't seem to get away from in every Guitar Center
its low class and not musical.
eric's playing is most definitely not a legato style of playing. He almost always picks each note, for his playing style to really be legato there would be hammer/pull-offs linking each note.
hendrix was all about tone and soul. not skill or legato bullshit like this guy, who i love, bytheway.
Tone, schmone. Why is he wearing a marching band uniform? And mumbling into microphone? Why the Flock-of-Seagull wall of hair in the front? (Actually, I've been listening to this guy for 20 years and never stop being amazed on how pure the sound is.)
Worst Shirt Best Sounds
It was his highschool band jacket and it was a tribute to Hendrix.
@rustyknight0303 The lamest tone ever? Eric Johnson? Surely you jest.
welcome to gay town. we have guitars.
