Well, this old dog learned a simple "trick" with your video.....I have a complete set of air tools, to include an air chisel and I never considered using it to remove bark....I would get out the hammer and chisel and struggle through it. You're not alone in it being satisfying to see the shape develop, I also find it really relaxing and often will watch a turning video just before going to bed. As a friend puts it, it's a very mindful activity. One day I'm hoping to have the space, money and time to get my own lathe.
Hi Greg! Turning videos are definitely an AMSR kinda thing. You’d be surprised at how little space some turners have - small shed kits and corners of basements. I’m super lucky in that when we moved I got a 24x36 pole barn with a concrete floor, insulation, and finished interior walls. Added a furnace it’s pretty much perfect, but I started out in a small basement room, moved up to a small garage, now I have the Taj Mahal of workshops. Be aware once you start turning, it’ll quickly become an obsession 😂
@@LisaRamlow I don't even have that, unfortunately. By American standards my house is tiny (OH is latterly from rural Arizona, I'd love to have that much space!) Probably a good thing I don't have the space, I already have one hobby taking up all my spare cash in guitars and basses, another would probably bankrupt me 😉

It’s impossible to please everyone and the vast majority of my viewers have said they like the voice overs, many of whom are also turners. So I’m striving for videos that are interesting to people who don’t turn, but offer some content for those who do. I’m certainly not trying to put out instructional videos as I’m still learning, but other people can watch some of the things I’ve tried and will get some idea if they might like to try it to, or if it’s a complete bust, or whatever. I finally decided that I’d do the commentary - for those that don’t want to hear any chitchat, they can mute it but it doesn’t work the other way around! 😊

Butternut is very pretty, but saying it is stinky is an understatement. It reminds me of a skunk drowned in a swamp. Great piece. And kudos for being able to put up with it.
Hi Ross! I’ve got a whole tree so I’m gonna jade to deal with the stink 😂 I gotta tell you though I was working with some wood black when I was carving that was 100x worse than butternut. My sawmill guy worked with some Amish folks and I asked them for some bark-on slices, which they did on a bit of an angle so the slab was oval. They referred to it as “bam” wood, and I’ve never found any reference to that anywhere so I’m guessing it’s a colloquial thing, but oh man that stuff was horrible. It literally smelled like swampy sewer gas when cutting it 🤮. I’ve never known for sure, but my guess is that is was cottonwood, or some other kind of poplar that likes its feet wet. Blech!
@@LisaRamlow At a guess, you probably got a hold of some Callery Pear wood. it is an incredibly invasive tree from asia that smells a lot like rotting fish. Its actually outlawed in most urban cities because of the stink, even though its quite pretty when it flowers. It will grow pretty much anywhere.
Beautiful bowl. I also enjoy watching the form emerge from the block. Another moment I like is when the sanding sealer is applied and the grain pops out. This butternut is fantastic.
You just gave me another idea how to remove the bark with that airtool. I have exactly the same tool but never thought of using it for this purpose. Thanks Lisa! And about your problems turning wet Poplar: I have the same experience but that's not an issue for rough turning. You just need to let it dry out a bit, then it works much better.
Hi Leo! I learned the air chisel trick from one of Lyle Jamieson’s videos and it works really well! Fortunately for me, I’ve been able to get my hands on a lot more decent turning stock and can be a little picky about what I turn. I use poplar all the time for frames (the other two Bear Track Girls are artists and I make their frames) and it’s a wonderful wood...after it’s kiln dried! 😂

My scraper is HSS but the burnisher I made is also HSS. I got a titanium drill bit but didn’t think about the fact that only the tip is titanium 🙄. Burnisher needs to be harder than the HSS so I’ve gotta get something else
Nice shape and grain pattern. I like this one. Did it move much after turning? Does drying it out make it more stable? In my experience dry wood still moves.
Hi Andy! I’ve not found that the pieces I kin dry move much if at all. I’m sure things expand and contract with humidity but it doesn’t seem to stay that way
I watched Lyle Jamieson use the air chisel and I thought that was brilliant! I roughed out the wet bowl and put it in the kiln on October 9th and finish turned it on November 1st

Hi Gregory, I have a shop smith and it doesn't have the power to turn anything but tooth pics. Look on Craig's list or somewhere else and start with a used lathe. Once yer hooked then buy the one you want. Make sure you get one that you want, don't be a cheap skate, save til you can afford it. I love my Robust! ( retirement money). Hi George! This was the Laguna faceplate that was being a bit disagreeable. I have a washer between my Nova G3 chuck and the spindle adapter, as provided by Nova. Not sure why the faceplate was so tight. Or maybe I was just particularly wimpy that day 😂
Hi PJ! I roughed out 6 bowl blanks in October and put them in the kiln - I forgot to weigh them or check them with the moisture meter but they were very wet - tree was cut in late August. I think they were in for about 3 weeks when I turned the first one, which was still a tad wet as it went a bit oval when I finish turned it but it didn’t crack. This one had been sitting in there since then, but the light wasn’t on past about 4 weeks so it was dry enough at that point I just didn’t get a chance to work on any of them until recently. Next batch I’m planning to weigh and check MC when I put them in, and probably once a week to see how they go. Thanks for watching 😊

Hi Mike! I think I went with the V gouge because my initial intent with the new gouge was to put a 40/40 grind on it and I’m pretty sure Stuart Batty says it needs the V shaped flute rather then the U flute. However once I got the gouge I was really hesitant to grind that much material off and decided to try the grind supplied by Thompson and I like it. I’m still planning on getting another good gouge and putting the 40/40 on as I like that one as well. Probably can’t have too many gouges, right!? 😂

I made a negative rake scraper out of a tire changing iron made of vanadium and chromium which when combined is consider a high speed steel.
My scraper is HSS but the burnisher I made is also HSS. I got a titanium drill bit but didn’t think about the fact that only the tip is titanium 🙄. Burnisher needs to be harder than the HSS so I’ve gotta get something else
Use a forester bit to give you a flat surface for your face plate
I have a couple of big ones now, including a 3” that should fit my faceplate. Will try it out soon!
Nice shape and grain pattern. I like this one. Did it move much after turning? Does drying it out make it more stable? In my experience dry wood still moves.
Hi Andy! I’ve not found that the pieces I kin dry move much if at all. I’m sure things expand and contract with humidity but it doesn’t seem to stay that way

I can’t use a bowl gouge at all. I always send it flying across the basement. Carbide is my go too and a skew.
Ah the skew still intimidates me! I mostly use it as a negative rake scraper 😂
ditto..Like the air chisel tip. beautiful bowl. So after you turned it the first time..how long before you turned it a 2nd and final time?
I watched Lyle Jamieson use the air chisel and I thought that was brilliant!
I roughed out the wet bowl and put it in the kiln on October 9th and finish turned it on November 1st

Hi Gregory, thanks for watching! To be honest I don’t know anything about the ShopSmith equipment so I can’t offer an opinion on that. I was really happy with my Delta midi lathe, and I’m loving my Laguna 😊
Hi Gregory, I have a shop smith and it doesn't have the power to turn anything but tooth pics. Look on Craig's list or somewhere else and start with a used lathe. Once yer hooked then buy the one you want. Make sure you get one that you want, don't be a cheap skate, save til you can afford it. I love my Robust! ( retirement money). Chuck hard to get off, try a washer between the chuck and the spindle face 👌🏻
Hi George! This was the Laguna faceplate that was being a bit disagreeable. I have a washer between my Nova G3 chuck and the spindle adapter, as provided by Nova. Not sure why the faceplate was so tight. Or maybe I was just particularly wimpy that day 😂
About how long was that blank in the kiln? Do you know or remember what the moisture content was when you put it? Beautiful work and beautiful wood.
Hi PJ! I roughed out 6 bowl blanks in October and put them in the kiln - I forgot to weigh them or check them with the moisture meter but they were very wet - tree was cut in late August. I think they were in for about 3 weeks when I turned the first one, which was still a tad wet as it went a bit oval when I finish turned it but it didn’t crack. This one had been sitting in there since then, but the light wasn’t on past about 4 weeks so it was dry enough at that point I just didn’t get a chance to work on any of them until recently. Next batch I’m planning to weigh and check MC when I put them in, and probably once a week to see how they go. Thanks for watching 😊

p.s. question: Why opt for a "V" gouge over a "U" gouge ?
Hi Mike! I think I went with the V gouge because my initial intent with the new gouge was to put a 40/40 grind on it and I’m pretty sure Stuart Batty says it needs the V shaped flute rather then the U flute. However once I got the gouge I was really hesitant to grind that much material off and decided to try the grind supplied by Thompson and I like it. I’m still planning on getting another good gouge and putting the 40/40 on as I like that one as well. Probably can’t have too many gouges, right!? 😂
