I have never seen them marketed as an "oil" based pencil but I got mine from Japan almost 5 yrs ago. They are a blend of oil, wax and fat. Very unique and my favorite pencil. Like you said Luminance will crumble too and so do Prisma so this does not bug me at all. The key with Holbein is knowing how to use them properly on the lay down, the application of the stroke is more particular than other pencils but you get used to it after a while. They are different and I like that difference, SO saturated and beautiful. They work beautifully on top of a Poly Chromos underlayer (which also works well with Meltz).
Thanks for sharing. I picked up the "oil" classifcation when I was doing a bit of research on meltz... honestly polychromos is the gold standard for an oil based pencil for me and they aren't all that similar. Great insights!
We know that the more is not always the merrier, however it came out beautifully and one can’t really tell it has 150 colours in it. That’s how harmonious it is.
I was so eager to try the holbeins from my sketchbox and now this video is feeding into the art supply collector in me.
Thanks so much. The pencils are a lot of fun! They are a little pricey, but if you have some other pencils a great way to get started with these is to get the pastels and work them in to your collection. Those pencils are seriously unlike any colors I have ever had in a set..: they aren’t particularly light fast but they are really fun to work with!!!

@@LanaGloschatArt the pastel colours are definitely tempting! Thanks for the link and overview :)
Very creative! Your skin tones are beautiful.
Thank you so much!😊
Using the metallics in the hair was genius! I would need a whole box of silver to draw my hair! 😂 Your drawing is stunning as always, what a challenge!
Ha ha! I was really stumped on using those Metallica for a while. Thank goodness es for the grays!!! 😂 thanks for watching!
What a fantastic video, and portrait!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Complete madness! I like it.😂
Ha ha😂 it was madness but also so fun.
i have the 150 set of prismacolor pencils that a friend got me - but will see if can some but i found most sets have similar colors - i also have sets of pastel colors pencils and metallic
Oh you should totally try this with the 150 prismas that would be so fun!
Wonderful!
Aww thanks so much!!!!
Wonderful ❤
Thanks so much!😊
Amazing. I'm definately going to check out your other videos
Awesome, thank you!
wow, what an amazing self portrait. beautiful work
Aw thank you SO much!😊
A beautiful self portrait. You are so talented. BRAVO
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful and impressive! Now I'm thinking of adding the Holbeins 150 to my collection.
Thank you! They are a blast, but pretty expensive. I did notice when I made this video that they are over $200 cheaper on amazon right now than blick!!! You know with amazon these prices don't always last, so this might be your sign ... ha ha! Here is a link with the lowest price I noticed. amzn.to/4a2t5SS
Excellent creation!! 👏👏
Thanks!!!😊
@@LanaGloschatArt You're quite welcome!! 🤗
Your portrait is stunning Lana. You certainly met your challenge (-: Marion 🎉
Thanks so much Marion! and thanks for watching
This was so much fun to watch that now I want to go bust mine out!
Thank you! 💚
Thanks so much! What set of holbein pencils do you have? What have been your thoughts on working with them?
@@LanaGloschatArt I have the same set as you do but I’m guilty of not giving them the use they deserve. They seem so precious and I was really silly nostalgic when I opened them and smelled that Japan smell from my childhood when my dad was stationed there. But, from playing with them, I remember being exited about how smooth and quick they were to lay down, as if Prismacolor and Polychromos had a love child. Overall, I adore them and they are my favorite to look at and smell! 🤣🤣🤣
@@amandaparker5086 fun! Yes get them out and show them some love! That’s what they are for… what if you created a few drawing that reminded you of Japan… then they still have that memory as you use them up.
@@LanaGloschatArt Same wavelength! 🧠 I was thinking about this beautiful picture my dad took of my mom in a lovely Japanese garden and I am telling myself to just jump in and have fun! You make it look so easy!
impressive watercolor painting with oil based pencils ;-) meticulous and disciplined work. after spreading the blender did you notice if you could apply light over dark in an effective way (opaque) ? BTW, sometimes the ugly skin phase is the best as far as dramatic texture.
Ha ha..: that’s what it felt like when I added meltz! Thanks!
These pencils worked light over dark great with blender and with OMS. That’s actually one of the ways they shine. Did you see how this worked in the hair with the light wispy hairs over dark?
@@LanaGloschatArt 10Q for the reply. i did hear you comment on light over dark and did notice the pink over the red but i was not sure whether the liquid bulldozer had paved the way first due to the timelapse. i use polychromos and have to use white oi pastel as a base on top in order to modify the color underneath. keep up the magnificent work :-)
You are an incredible artist ❤ Are you using pastelmat?
This is lightfast paper but I do use Pastelmat sometimes too! Check out my other videos
I love this challenge for you! I, on the other hand wouldn’t know how to incorporate all those colors in a portrait! 😂 I admire the dedication you had to put all the numbers in each color you were using! Color me impressed! Superb self portrait!!!!
I love when those little details are noticed. I truly love making videos and experimenting with new ideas and that was fun to work out. As always thanks for watching and for your support. You are awesome!
@@LanaGloschatArt so are you!
Wow i looked this set up on Amazon and its over $500. No way. Ridiculous. Youre a fabulous artist.
It is insanely expensive. I just did a comparison video between this set of pencils and the cheapest I have ever used ($28). Have you seen it? th-cam.com/video/20itifIhpn0/w-d-xo.html
It’s funny how much the price fluctuates. I only payed $260 on Amazon.
What do you think of these pencils? 😊
They are expensive but fun 🤩
Although these pencil feel like professional colored pencil. If you want lightfast colors, you ether should choose other options or have to check the lightfastness of individual colors.
Yes that is an issue. I planned to talk about this more. They are so fun to work with, I think that reframing what they are for is important. So if you are using the pastel shades which are not highlighted lightfast, they are for prints, play, and sketchbook… not for art you want to hang around forever. That being said… not everything needs to last forever to be important. I’ve loosened up my opinions about lightfastness over the years
@@LanaGloschatArt Completely agree! Not every art piece will be hang around forever. It’s just a heads-up for up coming artists who want to keep their arts for a long time or want to give it to someone.
How do you get to this point? Thats Beautiful!
See all those gray hairs in the drawing? I’ve been at this along time 😂
But thank you so much! 😊
Awesome. What paper are you using?
It’s the Derwent lightfast paper. Have you tried it?
@@LanaGloschatArt I’ve never tried it. Is it good? I have the Holbein 50 pastel set and considering getting the full set. Not sure. I’m fairly new to coloured pencils. I’m struggling to suss out the Holbein pastel colours because they are so muted.
You portrait is beautiful and so realistic ❤️ SUBSCRIBED
@@Becca-UK it’s my favorite paper for sure. There are lots of great pencils out there and the pastels are beautiful with the other colors. I’m not sure if my Amazon link works in the UK, but the Holbein pencil I linked from Amazon was $200+ off list price
