Servus. Nice post. The inner lining of the M53 (Bundesgrenzschutz) is identical to the M62 (Bundeswehr) and can be interchanged.

When I was in BAOR in the early 80's we used to patrol the East West border with the British frontier service and the BGS although by then they wore pretty much polizei green uniforms as I recall and I never saw any steel helmets. However they had previously worn sumpftarn camo trousers, jackets and parkas amongst other kit. The parkas are great bits of kit and I managed to get hold of a camo version in 1983, still got it. Fabulous winter wear.
    Thanks for the video

I Keep stumbling on You while looking for info on items CJ🎉...today i spotted a very nice "just like yours m53 but with the vent hole, large size "fits me" and nice liner for $190. U.S. very tempted to buy but wanted to look into it ...that a good price?
Yesturday i picked up a very nice repro of the 1861 dehlgren navy bayonet for $150..very big and chunky but awsome..seems even the repros are collectable. Hope your doing well and hello from merika

It's true that repros are becoming their own stand alone collectable as the original piece gets harder to find.the m53 is getting hard to find in it's original form as so many were altered when surplussed into ww2 lookalikes by reenactors...they dont come up for sale very often

Is it possible that the helmet has two layers of steel?
I have an M53 and when I hear it I can hear smth like sand rolling arround somewhere, could be the part where the steel is folded over but I dont know for sure.

I doubt the production would run into a double layer, perhaps its grit caught somewhere

Really interesting video, it goes to show the possible problems of confusion for the novice collector....what about if the helmet has no vent holes, would the helmet 'sweat' in cold weather?, if so why didn't they put them in? Another thing how easy would it be to drill in holes and fit vents and make a fake?....probably easier than you think, and maybe done?, cheers

i would imagine more than one of these has been passed off as a ww2 item, the only venting is in the holes in front of the liner and at the top of the head.

Nice salty helmet. The reason for these helmets was more or less political. The Federal Border Guards wore them and it therefore identified them as such to their communist counterparts across the border. This was because no soldiers from either side were supposed to patrol the border, all military personal were supposed to remain at least a KM from the border, though this changed later. The regular German army, when formed in 1955/56 wore American made M1s to begin with, then their own M1A1 from the late 1950s. The reason the Federal Border Guards wore the M53 pattern was that they were set up in the early Allied occupation days and were kitted out in surplus TR gear, including WWII helmets. Hope all this makes sense...!
