You noticed the water where young Viktor was looked polluted, with an oily film... however, there was lush vegetation around it, a waterfall, and children playing there - while it wasn't perfect, it was supporting life. Later, when Heimerdinger and Viktor are talking, the water is clear, but dead - all the vegetation has withered, the waterfall has gone, perhaps redirected to industry, and nobody is playing there - even the metal grates look like skulls. Also, in the flashback, there was a butterfly purposefully in frame with Viktor - and again later when Heimer and Viktor are talking about the fragility of life and legacy "figments" ... it flitters away.
@on_the_bright_side I don't think the undercity is more in touch with nature. There's no vegetation is the lanes, the only animals we see are used for their meat and there's a lot of polution. Scientific progress removing nature from our environment seems like a more fitting interpretation. I read a quote once that said, "Economists should aim to improve peoples lives, not simply improve numbers". They improved the quality of the water but it doesn't matter because nobody enjoys it anymore.
Congratulations! You recognized all 3 obscure characters in this episode: Singed (the creepy inventor of shimmer), Sky in the opening scene and looks like you even remembered Huck (trader from ep. 1). It is extremely rare to hit all these 3 marks on the first watch (trust me on this - I have watched A LOT of Arcane reactions).
I'm definitely of the opinion that Jayce's criticism of Heimerdinger is fair, but if this wasn't about Viktor and he actually believed that doing nothing for the undercity was a failure worthy of being removed from the council, Jayce would insist that every single one of them step down. At least Heimerdinger has good intentions and has failed the undercity out of a lack of understanding, rather than out of selfish desire for power or money like many of the councilors Heimerdinger is often too cautious out of fear, but Jayce is also pushing so hard for progress in this moment out of nothing but his own fear. The answer isn't to remove either of them, it's to find a compromise. Sadly, that just isn't where either of them are mentally or emotionally in this moment of heightened emotion
Mel's and Jayce's relationship is fascinating. I think it starts out as transactional on her part, but does it remain so? I love how it's written. Same for cupcake and Vi, albeit in a different manner. The image of Vi from episode 3 in the knifes reflection is such a cool blink and you'll miss it touch. What I find interesting about when Vi meets Jinx and Caitlyn turns up, is that Vi immediately tries to placate both sides and keep Caitlyn around, which shows that she is beginning to be more important to her. Which I think Jinx notices.
Jayce : this city has a lot of problems, how are you going to solve them ? Heimer : you should stop your research. Heimer 100% deserved to be kicked out of the council. He doesn't propose any solution. He doesn't give advices, he orders. He has been in charge of the city since its inception and let the situation worsen by his inaction. Jayce is also in the wrong because he's letting his emotions dictate this actions but at least he's doing something ...
Thinking about it, I actually do agree that Heimerdinger doesn’t have any real plan besides maintaining the status quo, and his reaction to being voted off shows how out of touch he’s been, especially about Jayce’s concerns. At the same time, most of the other councilors don’t seem to have any better idea how to solve those same problems, and if they did, most would rather focus on making profit anyways. I find it hard to believe the situation is going to improve without Heimerdinger, but I’m very interested to see where it’s going, and I’d love to be proven wrong!
With not beating Vi's score I don't think it really matters in her worth (especially to Silco) besides her own self-worth. Like Jinx is beyond being another grunt both on an emotional level for Silco ("she's like his daughter" - Sevika) but also a use level. Like singed couldn't beat Vi's score but he creates shimmer which is of much higher value then another punchy punchy person. Jinx didn't beat Vi's score but got 2nd place and just a little under 400 point less then her which is still 400 points less then a prodigies record. A record made around the same age at the time so not that bad. More than that though she is a technical genius that can create all these weapons that make up for both her physical inadequacies compared to other goons/grunts making her one of his most feared people, but also she can do far more damage with her creations then just punching could ever (the monkey bomb, chompers, episode 4 exploded a building, episode 5 figured out how to use the gemstone, episode 6 rigged the place to gas Sevika instead of head on fighting which was far quicker and easier, not to mention the end fight where Jinx was dealing with multiple firelights and Vi was fighting one). Of course this is also balanced out by how reckless she is and her paranoia and psychosis.
