This hybrid rice technology is a joke. The seeds being sold to the public are F1 equivalent of inbred varieties. True hybrid rice has
vigorous growth however, its maximum yield and even average yield can be matched by F1 equivalent of inbred varieties. NSIC RC 240 for example is an inbred rice that can have an average yield of 6.4 tons per hectare which is at par and even higher to some hybrid rice varieties sold to farmers. Try sowing these hybrid rice at densities equal to regularly sown inbred rice and there will be no significant difference in yields. The reason for high yield of hybrids is SRI (System of Rice Intensification) technique of growing rice. If the same technique is applied to RC 14, RC 222, RC 402 which are inbred varieties, these can surpass the yields of most hybrids while using lesser amount of fertilizers. According to one research textbook, yield increase as a result of hybridization may be real to corn but not to rice. I pity some of the farmers who were frustrated in their expectations after using hybrid rice. Our farmers are being tricked again by sales people to buy &^%* hybrid rice seeds. A filipino farmer named Mr. Gabuyo, was able to get more than 280 cavans per hectare using an old variety of rice called RC10 using SRI technique in rice farming.
