I'm not from Canada but my mom was and I grew up across from Soo, Ontario in Soo, Mi and I spent more of my teen years cruising Queen St. E than I did Ashmun St. He came to the Soo a lot. I had a major crush on him. Nothing sexier than a man with curly hair and a true Canadian accent of course I'm picky like that. Nothing but the best
I saw Gordon at The Ryman in 2010. He was great. He played for two hours with just a 5-10 minute break in the middle. A giant of a singer/songwriter talent and a great sense of humor too
This song continues to please. Gordon Lightfoot created an enduring Masterpiece that crosses generational boundaries to this day. Every time I perform this song, the room gets real quiet as young and old alike are taken by the melody, lyric, and supporting chords that make up one of the greatest songs of the 70's. Thank you, Gordie!
I've been playing this song since I was 16 and I always marvel at the beauty and poetry. I always end up smiling despite the poignance of the lyrics. Gordon is my songwriting hero. I've seen him twice, once in the 1980s and again in 2019. Amazing.
Gordon is so special to me. I listened to him when i was in my 20's. At 56 now his music can bring tears to my eyes. Those years were the best time in my life and now, after losing so much in my current years, his songs are bitter sweet. I still listen to him, but with a wistful heavy heart ❤️ and a mourning for a life that was more simple and happy. It's strange, although i cry when i hear his beautiful voice, his music takes me back and brings me comfort. Thank you Gordon for sharing your sweet voice and musical talent. You will always be in my heart. Bless you. Xxxxx
Gord is a genius born with perfect pitch and the ability to write songs with a poetic quality . His finger picking pattern is known as Travis style . Melody is a key point of his music .
This song, its poetry - its evocative images, its melody, really helped me articulate and overcome a breakup with someone I should never have been involved with from the onset: we were in love, without ever having had anything in common. C'est la vie, alors!
Oooooh , Mr Lightfoot … you enriched our lives so ! I remember your songs from my youth as well. And of course , they still speak to me. Saw you in concert twice : both xs in the Buffalo, New York area! Times to treasure. Rest in Peace, my friend . Liz
6string - Dave I agree 100% with your very elite list. John Denver is #1 in my book. No matter what genre of music someone listens to, everyone seems to appreciate the classics from these artists. And most of it written in the late 60s to early 1970s.
Gordon is is such a brilliant singer and song writer ..One of the greats of our lifetime .I remember buyiing his album and playing it for my mom and family...I couldnt help but sing along ..God bless you Sir .
I was 22 when i heard Gordon Lightfoot and I was so blown away with his unique guitar playing I love this song and the song Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald i played it on my acoustic and Les Paul and theyre easy songs to play if you know youre basic chords thank you Mr Lightfoot.
Every time I hear this song I think of a time 20 some years ago sitting in a little cabin in Silverton British Columbia sitting up all night writing a letter to the girl who I went there to visit. I often wonder about her because that morning I jumped in my truck after being up all night and made the 10hour ride back home without saying goodbye.
@z power Not sure my wife would understand that. This girl had come out of the Toronto scene in the 90's of raves and trying to escape her mdma or better known as ecstasy addiction when we met. She left the town we had met in Alberta and got into the hippie scene in the interior of British Columbia, we stayed in touch and visited each other she coming to me, me going to her, we were great friends. This last time I visited her she called and said she needed help, financially and emotionally, "if I could just come see her" is what she said. So I went. She always told me that she would end up hurting me just like all the other relationships she had been in. That night she left her little cabin she said to go visit a friend, she never came home all night, I realized she was hoping that I would just leave and that I wouldn't be there when she came home, so I did. I realize now that she was afraid of getting to serious, but did not know how to cope or deal with it. I think she just wanted to disappear after that, her Facebook page went down, and I never heard from her again, or seen the money, even though I would have been easy to find. The money was not important, I just wonder about her safety and happiness sometimes.
I used to work for CP Rail Special Projects, based in Revelstoke at the time. Rode my Norton Commando to and through Silverton. I miss those days and that area.
I hope the Canadian government gives him a stamp, he sure deserves it. I.m 72 and saw him live 3 times,at expo 67 in Montreal, he played in front of 50 thousand people, I was 17 years old,I will never forget it ,every song was beautiful.
I saw Gordon in 1974 at a concert near Chicago. I remember his “If I could read your mind” before that year. He is still tops on my list as a singer- songwriter.
J'ai 62 ans et je ne le découvre que maintenant. Je ne l'ai jamais entendu sur une radio française. Je n'arrête pas de repasser cette magnifique chanson et j'en ai les larmes aux yeux. Qu'elle belle âme ! Merci Gordon. Je vous écoute depuis la Provence.
long time member of the Lightfoot band playing bass is Rick Haynes (1968) and on lead is Carter Lancaster who stepped in after Terry Clements died in early 2011.
@@lightfootfan Thanks! It's always good to know the backing players. Some time back I saw a new singer songwriter on the breakfast show, and the band had legend Steve Cropper playing an amazing guitar solo. Anyway Gordon is a singer songwriter of legend too, up there with Paul Simon and Glenn Campbell
They have to make a proper bio film about him someday soon and Brian Cranston has to play him. I know some people think he looks like a scruffy Chris Pratt, and maybe so. But Brian Cranston is his spitting image and his great acting can do a film on Lightfoot justice.
Love this precious tune forever and it continues to bring tears and chills
RIP GL thank you!! 💘💖💗💝❤🩹💞❤🔥🙏🎼🎶
81 and still kickin' and making us proud. God bless Gordon and God bless Canada.

Brings tears to my eyes.... no one could ever write and sing songs like the amazing Gordon Lightfoot
@Gordon Lightfoot ever since I was a kid I've loved all your music 🎵
One of the most underrated singers of all-time. This song is sung and written from the heart. From an era when music had pure soul. ❤
He’s certainly not underrated.
He's such a lovely guy. I met him and was struck by how warm and humble he was. Love and respect, Gordie.
HE IS AN AWESOME GUY!

He’s just never been bettered....... If you could read my mind and the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald are two of the greatest songs of all time
I know right ?? Who could possibly come close ?!! 😉🌹
when Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand and many others have covered your songs like they have his, you are a musical legend.
I come to hear Gordon often...I will never forget this song...unforgettable thank you for your music Gordon....♥️
Great performance. Just a genuine down to earth humble gentleman. God bless him and his musicians.
Still got it , been listening to him for over forty years and never tire of his voice.
I love how he still plays it in the same key he recorded the song in 1970. Most artists have to lower the key.
You could tell he was having a hard time getting the notes out, but still better than singer who gives up and lowers the key.
Dude is a legendary singer songwriter. Awesome talent!

I love Gordon Lightfoot. I still see the young Gordon in him. He is sounding great!
Still brilliant-Canada's greatest singer songwriter!

Equal?! No way!
Saw him back in 72. He was and still is so awesome. His music is so soothing. I just love him.
A real musician... live... perfect performance...
Very much under rated singer. He had a rich, unique voice that I enjoyed.
underrated?? haaaa Dude !
There’s a video of from July 1st Canada Day,from outside his home. He is a trooper. 🤘🏻🇬🇧
It endures because its a damn great song!
Love this song. Brings back memories
The endings just too hard to take...GOLD
I can’t get enough of this song!!! 😊
When I was young and driving a gravel truck, I could barely hear the radio but this was one of the songs.
I love this guy.
Gord is a genius born with perfect pitch and the ability to write songs with a poetic quality . His finger picking pattern is known as Travis style . Melody is a key point of his music .
I found out he was highly trained in music from an early age. But he did possess a natural ability for sure.
His playing is beautiful. It is not Travis picking.
This song, its poetry - its evocative images, its melody, really helped me articulate and overcome a breakup with someone I should never have been involved with from the onset: we were in love, without ever having had anything in common. C'est la vie, alors!
Fn legend one of the greatest storytellers thats ever lived
I saw him in Nashville in August, 2018 and his voice is much better now. Sweet and beautiful
Thank you GL. I feel better after listening to you sing that.

So great! Very few singer-songwriters mark their time in history to the extent that Gordon Lightfoot has.
True! Maybe Carol King and James Taylor. But we lost Jim Croce and Dan Fogelburg too soon. John Denver too.

He's a good icon is a great performer I'm sorry he's not with us anymore but his music will live on and that's an interesting interview with him
This song makes me cry enough without the poignant reminder of the brutality of ageing.
It's part of our life cycle. Sunsets are also beautiful and can precede a dark starlit sky which can sooth the soul.
The music will remain.
If he was a smoker, it's kinda obvious
