We've gone on some pretty wild adventures over the past five years, but there's always been a bucket list of musicals just begging to be turned into WitW Documentaries. Here are six of them.
Help us turn these dream musicals into a reality by supporting our third annual Kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

Alright, I have to admit, this was an effective way to promote the Kickstarter. I want to see all of these and now feel a more concrete motivation to contribute.
Not sure if you would’ve seen this but Ryan McCartan recently alleged some interesting details of his involvement with Heathers. It’s on his YT channel but it basically involves him being promised the role in the film adaptation, which is the only reason he did Off-Broadway, only for that to never happen.
One musical I am not reading anything about in hopes of a Wait in the Wings documentary one day is Taboo. I've heard some inklings of the craziness, but want to wait for the best to cover it.
I won't lie, even though I'm already pitched in deep to the KS, if you ran one JUST for Nerds & Dance of the Vampires, I'd find excuses to shove as much dosh as I could into them. Those two NEED their documentaries.
A genuine documentary about turn off the dark, like actually talking to individuals apart of the project would be amazing. That in general is what I’m dying to hear more about! Creatives apart of the process giving a sense of what it was like in the moment.
So excited for An American Idiot documentary from you! You do such a great job with your videos.
I adore JGJ and Stark Sands. Plus, they’re working together again with director Michael Mayer in Swept Away.
Swept Away is so intriguing and also 😳
Dance of the Vampires definitely seems like a good example for " If it ain't broken, don't fix it" It's still thriving here in Germany ( they even filled out the piece with the red boots at the turn of act one/act two and turned that into an awesome ensemble piece). 😊
I would LOVE a full documentary about the original production of Merrily we Roll Along😭
Someday, maybe, we can get Repo: The Genetic Opera?
Fuck yes!
Super stoked to one day see all of these musicals get the spotlight in a video, but I must offer a show that I wish more people talked about: Jekyll and Hyde. Alternatively, the musicals of Frank Wildhorn, because despite their flaws and their lack of success, they have a lot of passion and charm to them that I wish more people could see. X3
I would love for Howard Ashman and Marvin Hamlisch 1986 Broadway musical 'Smile' to get the Wait in the Wings treatment some day.
Please please please I am begging you do a doc on American Idiot.. NOBODY talks about it and it's amazing cast and ensemble,
Same! It was a great show and a wonderful era
Don't worry, that stretch goal of the Kickstarter was successfully reached!
And Billie was the BEST version of St Jimmy imho
I really love you to talk about schmigadoon please
I was just ranting to my friends about Dance of the Vampires yesterday. I would absolutely love to see you do a deep dive on that show because I have so many strong feelings about it. So glad to see the kickstarter is already past its initial goal! Hope it continues to do well!
Saw Chess when it toured here in Denmark. Have been fascinated by the show ever since I first heard about it in school. It was a great experience. Never new it was a flop. So will be sending some money tomorrow
Probably should have mentioned that there already is a full length documentary on American idiot already.
I love your work on these docs and I especially like how you weigh potentially biased opinions. So although “Broadway Idiot” exists I would love to hear what new your doc would bring to the conversation.
FINALLY UR MENTIONING GREEN DAY U DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!
The Heathers backstory would be interesting.
Press coverage of producers messing with actors' other commitments when the show became popular.
The authors announced amateur rights availability in the middle of talk about a Broadway transfer was odd.
There was definitely off stage drama
Oh, I cannot wait for the full versions of these documentaries. But I am curious, what is a musical you want to see made, that hasn't been? You could base it from any other source, it just can't be a preexisting musical. And who would you want to see in the creative team to translate it to the stage?
I’d love one for Harmony someday.
Love your documentaries! Keep up the good work.
Have we seen a Wait in the wings look at Six the musical? Would love to see them delve into that story.
Yay, you listed both of the ones I want to see you cover (Chess and Dance of the Vampires). Definitely a great way to promote your Kickstarter!
Excited to see American Idiot in LA this year!
I do hope you get to cover Tanz Der Vampire, even if the Go Fund Me doesnt hit the target.
It's a great trainwreck of a story lol
Saw Dance of the vampires when Det ny Teater played it in 2020. It was a translation of the Austrian version. It was one of the last shows I saw before going in to lockdown. It was a gift from my mom because I had just passed my bachelor exam. She didn’t like it but I loved it
Would love one on Be More Chill
So excited to learn all about these stories! Fingers crossed the kickstarter goal happens 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Waiting for my credit card's next statement period to start to contribute to the kickstarter!! I'm hoping mini docs or something can still be done if it doesn't hit the full goal 🙏🏻
I don’t normally comment on TH-cam videos but as someone who’s enjoyed your documentaries immensely I have to ask, since you’re going to cover “Dance of the Vampires”, could you also cover the musical “Lestat” from 2005?
It’s a show that had so much going for it:
- it was an adaptation of Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Lestat”, with a little bit of “Interview with the Vampire” added in
- the music and lyrics were by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin
- the lead role was played by Hugh Panaro, a Broadway “Phantom” himself
- the pre-Broadway San Francisco run beat the pre-Broadway box office record held by “Wicked”
It went through changes between San Francisco and New York, where it opened on Broadway and closed within a matter of months. Allegedly, an Original Cast Recording was completed but it hasn’t ever seen the light of day.
It’s an interesting story that I’d love to see get your Wait in the Wings treatment as “Lestat” was one of the first musicals I ever got hyped about from a fan perspective, reading each announcement about its development as they would come.
In some ways, I think “Lestat” might just be my “Rebecca”. 😝 Keep up the great work!
You should do one for the original 1971 production of Grease, there are songs, characters and scenes that we will never see. The original manuscript is available in the Chicago Public Library
I’d love to see more collab with Broadway By Ghostlight - you guys are two of my favourite musical theatre historian TH-camrs (which it just occurred to me is a very niche topic to have multiple favourites in, but that’s why the community is so interactive 😆) 🥰
I’d love to see you cover the show Moose Murders one day
It opened and closed on the same night because it was just that awful. It has a bizarre story that even those who saw it can’t really describe.
I loved the American Idiot documentary that was on Netflix back in the day, and I’d love to see WitW’s take
I hate to be pedantic but ... "Chess" is pop not rock and roll and was not Tim Rice's first show post-Lloyd Webber. That honour goes to "Blondel" which had a score composed by Stephen Oliver.
Your background noise sounds like my ringtone and it is totally messing with us right now
Honestpy I would be so hyped to see a Chess documentary!!!
Here's an idea for a video: A forgotten musical. TIME: THE MUSICAL.
They should always film Broadway shows just before opening. That way, if it flops, they can sell it to TV or theatrically overseas, and make their money back. (Just because not enough people are in the mood to pay to see it live, they're more likely to give it a chance in their living rooms.) If the show's a hit, so much the better: you have a class-A recording that will put the bootleggers out of business.
The rationale for not doing this used to be that it would be too much competition for the stage show, which has been long since disproven. You can see the original cast of "Hamilton" for free if you know where to look, or legitimately on streaming, but people still fight to get tickets to see it live as well.
I hope you do all of these musicals as docs
Oh my gosh the Season 1 merch! What a throwback!!
Hopefully with all the exciting stuff planned for the future, there can be even more cool themed merch for Wait in the Wings!
(including some of the addons available at the Kickstarter hint hint wink wink)
I’m gonna be in the sponge bob musical
I'd really love you to talk about Ragtime the musical. I heard that it's got quite an interesting background, and it's my favorite musical!
I love Tanz so much. It's just such a tragedy that they tried to camp it down.
oh my god i *_need_* a heathers video! its super rare to see heathers content in 2024 lol.
Do American Idiot especially because Tommy is back on Broadway and that
Musical is so special
Great video.
You should do Moulin Rouge!, a gentleman's guide to love & murder, and les miserable.
Check your team's email inboxes. Our podcast on DOTV is willing to help!
Excellent pitch :)
YESSSS CHESSSS I LITERALLY HAVE BEEN LIVING FOR CHESS SINCE THE MUNY DID IT LAST YEAR

I want to see you do the Tanz so bad
I would love to see a documentary about Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical. It is the worst musical of all time and a masterpiece at the same time.
Ok but where did he get that shirt?
Yes to the Chess (musical doc)!
Would it be possible for you to do a documentary about the canceled batman musical and interview Tim Burton
Man how I wish i had money to pitch to this ughhh
❤❤
Didn't you already do a video on CHESS?
“A transfer that quickly turned into a bloody disaster” did you mean that literally or are you British?
Also Heathers for the love of god
