These break-out summaries are excellent!!! I've recommended the podcast to a friend and these break-outs of specific topics make it easy to just send the specific clip to her. I know this is extra work so I appreciate the extra effort to inform your fans/customers! Cheers and thanks!
You're very welcome! Please let me know in the comments if there's ever a Pencast topic you think would be helpful as a standalone video! Thanks for watching! - Drew
Loved some of the recommendations, but noodlers is really hard to get here in Germany and - if you even manage to find it - also quite expensive. Diamine is basically the only brand you can find regularly in shops, besides montblanc and Pelikan
Noodler's inks are mostly great stuff, but seldom my first choice. For pink, I love Iroshizuku Tsutsuji, for orange it's Private Reserve Orange Crush, Purple is Watewrman Tender Purple and De Atramentis Lilac for normal writing, and Rohrer & Klingner Sulferino when I feel like shouting. For green it's impossible to say. I love green ink, and have dozens of shades. Yellow is Buttercup. Gray is without doubt Montblank Wood and Tobacco scent Gray. I don't like blue inks, but I love Noodler's Navaho Turquoise. For a truer blue, the only one I actually love, which I used to hate, is Noodler's Baystate. Brown is a tossup between Waterman Absolute Browen, and Monteverde Canyon Rust. Burgundy is definitely Black Swan in Australian Roses. I love a dozen red inks, but while my solid favorite was Red Dragon, it has switched to Private Reserve Vampire Red. I tried Vampire Red because it was Halloween and the name seemed to fit. As soon as I used it for the first time, though, I knew I liked it more than Red Dragon. I don't really have a favorite black fountain pen ink because I think real, high quality India Ink black is so much superior that there's no comparison. I know they make "India Ink" for fountain pens, but this really isn't new. Artists have been doing this for a hundred years. The problem is that the shellac is left out, and it's the shellac that makes India Ink special. But what about inks that I have trouble placing in a color group. I absolutely love Diamine Ancient Copper. I use a full bottle each year. My all-time favorite journaling ink is Montblanc SE James Purdey and Sons Single Malt. This, too, is a scented ink. This blasted stuff cost ninety dollar a bottle, but it's more than worth it. I've never found another ink like it. I spent about six months' worth of my yearly ink budget buying enough bottles to be pretty sure I'll die before I run out. It has been discontinued, but it can still be had, though the places I know that still have a supply are charging from one twenty to one thirty a bottle. I think it's worth it, even at that price. It'[s just a fantastic ink. There are other inks I have no idea how to classify, but that I love. It's only a problem when I try to list my favorite colors of ink.
Wow! That's what I call an informative, educated, encyclopaedic post. Thanks, James. I'm going to give the MB Purdy another look. I'd have loved to hear your absolute favourite greens. My current go to is GvFC Moss Green.
I like the Noodler's inks that I have tried. A while ago, I had ordered Noodler's Liberty's Elysium in a sample vial and like it a lot compared with some of the other blue inks that I have tried. Today, when I ordered my new pen, I also ordered a bottle of this ink. It really is a pretty blue.
I prefer darker colors and shades, and since green is my favorite color, I prefer Private Reserve Ebony Green over Spearmint. Noodler's Zhivago is great too.
I love the colour of Baystate Blue, but it's the only ink I have encountered that is completely unusable on Tomoe River because it feathers and bleeds through like crazy. Interesting that you both classified Haha as grey, that would never have occurred to me! I would probably classify it as light blue, but with some hesitation because of the colour shifting.
Agreed. Baystate Blue is truly beautiful but problematic with regard to feathering; so much so that I am setting it aside. Also, another Noodler’s that is pretty but has issues is Apache Sunset. I love the color, but it takes a remarkably long time to dry. 😕
It makes me so happy Drew is such a Nightshade fan! It was my first bottle of ink and to this day I have never bought an ink I love quite as much. May not be the most fancy Noodler's ink but something about the color brings me back to it everytime, it's my daily writer.
Drew, I'm with you. Broken one bottle in my life. Dropped it in the parking lot loading it into the car. It was Noodler's North African Violet and it's still on the pavement.
I would love to grab a sample set of all of these picks. I know that you have a set of ink that is each of your picks, but they aren't one of each color category.
Can you please speak more about the Noodler's Bay State "staining". Are you saying we shouldn't perhaps use it in a clear demonstrator because it will stain the resin? Other than that what will it stain besides my fingers?
Awesome lists! I don't know how to contact you for questions, so I hope you monitor the comments here. Could you do a similar list of colors, but with water-resistant inks? They don't have to be 100% waterproof or archival or for watercolor art (although they can be if you want), but just that a decent amount gets left behind if there is a water spill of some sort. Thanks!
I drift between Saguaro Wine and Cactus Fruit Eel and, even when pushed, I can't quite decide which I prefer. I have more Noodler's inks than I'll ever use in a dozen lifetimes & some of them are a bit too exotic to risk with my more expensive pens. However those are two that I'd have no hesitation inking up. Another vibrant ink, less likely than Noodler's to set fire to your pen's soul & summon forth all the demons from Hades, has to be Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu.
I recently got Noodler's Blue/Black. It's now my favorite ink after Noodlers Whaleman's Sepia dislodging DeAtramentis Sherlock Holmes due to it's water resistance.
Would it be possible to contact Pilot regarding a dark green (highly unlikely) or a set of standard colors (in my case a dark green). Iroshizuku shin ryoku is great but too light for fine pens. The new one they have coming out looks nice but @inky rocks says it has a blueish hue to it.
And for the next version of the list, can you do one without noodler's ink? I think noodler's ink is over-represented in these list. I do own a lot of noodler's ink but ended up rarely using it because the bullet proof quality actually made it feather and bleed through like crazy in the crappy paper I am forced to deal with at work... (mainly company printed forms and generic cheap copy paper) Or alternatively if you still want to include noodler's, then make it so you give 3 choices for each category. Also, noodler's red black and nightshade is very similar colour in my eye (I have both) unless I compare it side by side...
Of all the oranges I have pelikan edelstein mandarin crusts the least... I also have an orange from krishna inks...but it's not available worldwide..... Also kanikkonna from krishna is an awesome well behaved yellow....i think Drew particularly might enjoy them
I have a list of all the inks shown in the thumbnail in the video's description. I hope that helps! I don't know that exact ink but it'll be on the list for sure! - Drew
I would pronounce 'Herbin' as *air-Ba!*. The exclamation mark is meant to represent that sort of nasal echo into the back of the cave that you hear in the spoken word. I could ask my hubby's French colleague to be sure, but I think this is pretty accurate (I've translated Jean-Jacques Rousseau and I've also translated my own fiction into French).
Syrah is beautiful; I own it. But Diamine Oxblood is the undisputed GOAT burgundy ink. I will die on this hill, and look St. Peter dead in the eyes as I pass through the gates of Heaven.
I love the vibrancy of Baystate Blue. But if I get it on my fingers I look like I've been murdering Smurfs for a few days. It stains too much for my taste.

Diamine’s Guitar Ink Tobacco Sunburst is a lustrous brown, so much more. My new favourite.
Loved some of the recommendations, but noodlers is really hard to get here in Germany and - if you even manage to find it - also quite expensive.
Diamine is basically the only brand you can find regularly in shops, besides montblanc and Pelikan
Noodlers Baystate Blue and Red-black are powerful!
I Agree! LOL - you guys are so good together! My list of sample vials grows day by day! Thanks for the reviews!
Thanks, Nancy! - Drew
Time to make a sample pack of all those colors

This was such a cool comment, thanks for your opinions on ink! :)
For purple, I really love Christmas Day's purple with pink undertones in the Inkvent 2021 calendar.
Dang I was just looking through your old videos looking for ink recommendations. This came at the perfect time :) thank you
Yay! Thanks for watching! - Drew

Need to carry the 80ml twilight bottles again!
I still love J. Herbin:Cornelian d'Egypte. I don't think it gets enough love🤷🏻♂️
I prefer darker colors and shades, and since green is my favorite color, I prefer Private Reserve Ebony Green over Spearmint. Noodler's Zhivago is great too.
Can't argue with you on that one, Stephen! - Drew
I really want a dark green… does ebony green meet that in your opinion?
I love the colour of Baystate Blue, but it's the only ink I have encountered that is completely unusable on Tomoe River because it feathers and bleeds through like crazy.

Loving some Golden Sands today. I have most of your first list. Great ideas, guys!

I really do love that color! - Drew
Drew, I'm with you. Broken one bottle in my life. Dropped it in the parking lot loading it into the car. It was Noodler's North African Violet and it's still on the pavement.
How long has it been up until now? Does this still hold up? I’m eyeing on a collection of bulletproof inks 🥹
@@prapanthebachelorette6803 It literally lasted for over two months, surviving sun and rain.
I would love to grab a sample set of all of these picks. I know that you have a set of ink that is each of your picks, but they aren't one of each color category.
A sample pack of each of their lists is a brilliant New Year's sample pack idea...unless it is too labor intensive to create.🤷🏾♀️

@@Gouletpens Excellent! I look forward to it.
Please give us your opinion on Van Dieman's Inks made in Tasmania, Australia
tbh i wanna know the inks in the thumbnail cuz those interest me
This is what I wanted to ask.
There's a link in the video's description. Hope that helps! - Drew
This is FANTASTIC. Eye opening and inspiring. ❤
Will there come a 2021 best fountain pens soon?
I drift between Saguaro Wine and Cactus Fruit Eel and, even when pushed, I can't quite decide which I prefer. I would like to hear about the Monteverde noir collection. It seems like a good set.
I’ve used Ocean Noir and Smoke Noir, both are great.
Interesting list. Can you recommend an ink similar to Noodler’s nightshade that has a bit more permanence?
Would it be possible to contact Pilot regarding a dark green (highly unlikely) or a set of standard colors (in my case a dark green). Iroshizuku shin ryoku is great but too light for fine pens. The new one they have coming out looks nice but @inky rocks says it has a blueish hue to it.
Are there any other iroshizuku inks being discontinued? If so to buy one before they are gone
There are a total of three Iroshizuku inks that are being discontinued: Tsukushi, Ina-Ho and Tsuyu-Kusa.
How dark is ebony green?. Mines may not have been so much. I may have gotten an altered batch probably as i wrote with a fine nib.
And for the next version of the list, can you do one without noodler's ink? I think noodler's ink is over-represented in these list. This was so much fun! You guys are great
Thanks for watching! - Drew
Guys....great list but is there a reason you never mention Diamine? :-)
Cheap so smaller margins?
How can you not name sailor 731 as your pink ?! That is the hot pinkest pink I've found.
Yellow: kwz el dorado. Super shader, very easy on the eyes.
What is the gold shown second from the left in the thumbnail?
I have a list of all the inks shown in the thumbnail in the video's description. I hope that helps! I don't know that exact ink but it'll be on the list for sure! - Drew
Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)) Great tips, I must try!
Why is there a #224? Is that a reference to Sailor 224?
That's weird! I guess TH-cam picked that up as a hashtag when I typed it into the product description. - Drew
What ink would you recommend that would be closest to a rose gold? (I'm a lefty, so nothing too wet.)
The very best would be Robert Oster Rose Gold Antiqua! - Drew
Ferris wheel press - Lady Rose in Gold
Herbin Rouille D'ancre passes in my rose gold pens
What color is the Goulet Pen Company ink splatter logo patterned after?
It's basically Noodler's Liberty's Elysium. - Drew

Oxblood is a wonderful ink. I actually use more Oxblood than I do Black Swan.
How much for his list
I have them all linked in the video's description! - Drew
I still think deep dark red is the best red but I get why you wouldn't have that on there since yous don't carry it
Lot's of Noodler's 😁 and no love for Oxblood 🥺
I am sorry, but Drew not using a fountain pen in this video makes me a little skeptic about his recommendations. :D
I love the vibrancy of Baystate Blue. But if I get it on my fingers I look like I've been murdering Smurfs for a few days. It stains too much for my taste.
You speak truth! It's a calculated risk, for sure! - Drew
First.
Also, great work guys! Love your videos.
Thanks so much for the support and for the kind words! - Drew
Nice!! Merry Christmas. God's Blessings!!
Comment never answered. What pen is durable enough to outlast a neglectful man?
I would recommend TWSBI - their caps seal really well, and they can be fully disassembled for some intense cleaning. - Drew
Noodler's Yellowjacket has Brian's name all over it.
OOOoooooohhhhh - Florence has invoked the name of Brian's arch-nemesis! - Drew
Brian's pink ink is not a pink in any way or form. But the ink is gorgeous!
