  • This talk is a Dorking response to a TED talk by Magda Sayeg, who spoke about yarn bombing her town in America.
Gillian Harris has made a short documentary-style film about Dorking's Guerilla knitters, which is shown first, and then a disguised representative of the group will pose questions such as 'Why shouldn't little old ladies have fun in a social, creative and slightly-not-allowed manner? There are serious social benefits to this group, responding to real 21st century challenges. Knitting and knattering alleviates loneliness, depression, keeps the mind active and the joints mobile, and provides collaborative, creative purpose that entrances and enhances our town.
About seven years ago a small group of knitters started to decorate our town without permission. Iconic landmarks, such as our giant metal cockerel, were enhanced with hats, medals, musical instruments. A representative from this elusive and subversive group made a (disguised) appearance at TEDxDorking as, like Banksy, it's necessary for them to preserve their secret identities.
Their representative will be talking about their creative responses, their motivation, their past work, and their plans for the future beautification of the city of Dorking.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    It's a lovely movement.
Unfortunately most women can not afford the yarn needed.
Companies that sponsor will eventually have their political agendas to fulfil.
I wish somebody would sponsor just for the sake of love and beauty and kindness.
