The comrade has come Anyway, as a veteran of this series of 8 years, your review is actually pretty solid and I'm glad that you enjoyed your time here! For the criticism of first game, that being characters knowing eachother firsthand before the incident, is a bit unwarranted imo and is something that modern Touhou starts to struggle with too on a worse level (such Sannyo knowing Sanae or Enoko knowing Marisa with no build-up). Once you start reading the story more and more, you start to understand their dynamics and it helps to set up the mystery as to what characters were like before they got spirited away since our characters are quite notorious in outside world (and yeah I feel like that point should've stressed even more that characters were *spirited away* and not pre-established in the setting, and with the knowledge that the mastermind was sniping for Tsubakura, it kind of makes sense as to why a lot of "familiar" characters are here, it wouldn't make any sense for some nobody who is unfamiliar with everyone to be here). And overall a tip of advice I have is to read Prologues and Character Profiles as they provide the tidbits of who these characters are and what situation they find themselves in (and in 4th game, something really important happens in prologue wink-wink) And overall Len'en is much more story and character-based than Touhou, so it is important to read various character interactions, and it starts to kick off massively in 3rd game (where it also introduces the best homunculus blorb) and character arcs are also more prominent, like Kuroji becoming more and more amoral and despicable, yet still retaining that hidden part of them that might be more gentle and traumatized. It is very weird to see a review that's more gameplay focused, considering not even Len'en fans like it (there's a reason why "JynX balancing" is a meme), but maybe it's for the better? Dunno, again, it might be due to spoiler reasons, but I wish story was touched upon more, like Adagumo's siblings' tragedy ( -and the only good thing about EMS, don't @ me- ) and the premise of the first game, but oh well Would love to see further coverage since you seem to like the series, and I already really love your vids, so best of wishes from the local Russian fan (just for the love of Joseph Stalin DO NOT play BotC, not only is it dead, it's not good; and I'm speaking from the guy who is a self proclaimed sovereign of BotC) -Also props for refraining from mentioning the birb like that frogge guy did, that birb is very important-

It’s quite funny to see this as I’ve been trying to get into Len’en recently and JynX just released a video announcing Steam remakes of the first 4 games(but those will most likely be late 2020s considering the other projects going on)
@@Megapig9001 On JynX’s live streams he occasionally has a thing setup that has all of the Len’en character’s heads rolling and bouncing around in an obstacle course to entertain people and when they don’t make it to the goal in time they explode so having Suika Game inside of a Len’en game is probably one of the least unhinged things he could’ve done
Len'en 4 is the most content packed stg i have ever seen, it's a ride for sure it's like, 2.5 games in one It's also incredibly unbalanced, for both the enemies and you
Just happened to find your channel from this vid. Len'en 1 and 2 are very similar to Touhou in a lot of ways, but starting with Len'en 3, the series very much becomes its own thing. I personally find the dialogue in Len'en games more memorable than Touhou's, especially starting from Len'en 3 because you play as multiple characters, much like Touhou 8. In Len'en 4, ALL five teams of three characters has dialogue for every boss, and all bosses make a return for Len'en 4. It's a lot of making fun of every boss and each other for one reason or another, and it's very funny. Not to mention Suzumi, who I hope you manage to find out about on your own, it's a character that Touhou characters cannot compare to in mystery... I do hope you go on to enjoy the other games!
Oh boy Len'en! I started getting into the series myself a couple months ago and its been a while ride. I admittedly haven't played much of the first two games, just a few normal runs and one run of each easy extra. But I've played the third game more and I like it a lot. I'd easily say it's up there with some of my favorite main series Touhou games. I played a lot of the fourth game too, but the fourth game is also quite large. I played it for over 15 hours and still never ended up beating the extra stage. The series has some really good lore too. After finishing each game I felt compelled to go read all of the info about each game's story and characters on the wiki. It's got really good music too. And like Touhou its music is what made me want to get into it.
Speak of the devil and it shall appear. I was just thinking about trying the games out after having Enraku's theme on repeat for the past week. I might have to give it a shot now xD
Sorry if I mention this but Misremembered Memories is supposed to be a even more complex battle against Tsurubami Senri after the events of the last game. Like before I became a complete fan, I heard that many Spell Cards that Tsurubami uses are inspired in different characters, and now I see those references. There's even the silhouette of the character behind the Tori, although because of the background color is hard to see.
thanks for making a video on len'en! it's always nice to see this series get more recognition! also, make sure to read the lore, go to the wiki to read the character profiles and prologues and extra stories and stuff. the story is like my favorite thing about len'en ( most of touhou lore is also in character profiles btw) undertale is a ripoff of len'en.
Not bad! Idk about you but I think saying that the characters gender (except for Haru and Hoojiro) is up to interpretation could be cool and less confusing to new players wondering why the characters are represented in lots of different ways gender-wise.
I actually had to go through the script and make sure that I put “they and them” for everyone. From playing, I imagined Hibaru speaking with a masculine voice and noticed in dialogue they used “Mx.”
@@Megapig9001 hmhm, it's bc since I watched with captions cuz I'm outside of my house I noticed you mentioned Kuroji as a she, not trying to disrespect your gender hc by any means, just pointing out for newcommers.
The characters gender is up to viewer interpretation, if you view Kuroji as a girl then you are welcome to use she. It only becomes a problem when someone tries to declare for a fact that X character is X gender, which hasn't been done at all. Use whatever prefixes you like~!
Funny the version youre playing is the memory version not the original timeline version. Which is ver 1.00 The memory version is something youll get after finishing lenen 4
Does it have any borrowed assets from Touhou though? (it looks like it does but maybe not) If it's using Touhou assets but isn't a derivative work doesn't that technically put it in violation of ZUN's copyright rules?
No borrowed assets here. JynX had good experience with remaking ZUN's PC-98 games down to a T that they can just make their own original assets. Some sounds may sound familiar, but that's just because JynX either got them from the same keyboard that ZUN does (SD-90 something, can't remember) or got them from the same website (some of ZUN's sound effects are just heavily modified royalty-free sounds found online).
I just can't get over how... "desaturated" and grayish-brown these games look like, both backgrounds and characters. They just look unappealing. Compared to Touhou's bright colors and distinct memorable character designs (whatever you say about ZUN's drawing skills) it's like David Yates vs. Wes Anderson.
It's a stylistic choice. This is also reflected in JynX's PC-98 remakes (but there are April Fools videos that they put out; the Re:SoEW one is partly real, just not released to the public ever)
Probably my favourite little detail of Len'en is how it has two official Vtubers that are older than the hololive boom.
