      Regardless if you are using salt or chlorine tablets to chlorinate your pool. You should still shock your pool on a weekly or at least biweekly basis. Especially if you constant rain or the demand on the chlorine is high. The rain will dilute your salt level. Check your phosphate levels.

    • @L_TheTruth
      @L_TheTruth ปีที่แล้ว

      @corinnetodd4807 it depends on the size of your pool and the results of testing the pool water. If ph is low, add baking soda to bring ph up. If ph is high, add muriatic acid to bring ph down. If chlorine level is low, add chlorine.
      For bonus points, consider shocking (extra chlorine) after once a week, and/or large swim parties, and/or heavy rains.
      If pool is very dirty and needs cleaning, consider flocculant or clarifier or algeacide.
      Test a couple times a week and you will be crystal blue easily.

    To preserve the life of your vinyl pool, it would be a good idea to pre-dissolve this product in a bucket and then either pour the bucket in (if you're strong enough to lift such a bucket) or toss pitchers of the mix into the pool.
    I'm not sure what else is in this product, but the main ingredient is obviously Calcium Hypochlorite (AKA Cal-Hypo.) For the average pool owner, aside from the use of a salt water generator, there are essentially three ways to add chlorine to your pool: Cal Hypo, Sodium Hypochlorite (AKA liquid bleach,) and dichlor/trichlor (slightly different but very similar products.)
    For all of these methods, you are not only adding chlorine, but you are also adding something else into your pool -- *Calcium* Hypochlorite adds calcium, liquid bleach ( *sodium* hypochlorite) adds salt, and dichlor/trichlor add cyanuric acid (AKA "conditioner.")
    Additionally, Cal Hypo and liquid bleach (as well as salt water generation) raise your pH (basic) while dichlor/trichlor lowers your pH (acidic.)
    You should make your decisions on what products to use based upon your current water chemistry, which you can get tested at any local pool store or by ordering a test kit (store it inside.) If your pool's calcium is too high, avoid using Cal Hypo. If your cyanuric acid is too high, avoid using dichlor/trichlor, etc.
    Since you are using a salt water generator, which raises the pH & doesn't add cyanuric acid into the pool, it would be a good idea to shock it 2-3 times a year with 1 pound (2 lbs if it's green like this) of dichlor/trichlor granulated shock, which is available at any local pool store. (Stir it into a bucket of water as explained before.) This will help keep your cyanuric acid in the 50-100 ppm range and help to offset everything that you've got raising your pH.
    Once your cyanuric acid is in this range, any additional shock treatments could be done with liquid bleach (unscented & unthickened) or this cal hypo product that you're using here. If your calcium starts getting too high (above 275-300 ppm for vinyl,) you'll have to either quit using this cal hypo product (and go almost exclusively to liquid bleach) or drain the pool.

  • @jameshanna7651
    @jameshanna7651 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    First you shouldn't just throw the stuff in the pool. Take a. 5 gallon bucket. Mix in bucket dump in pool clear in 30 min

    • @Giusep1181
      @Giusep1181 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s correct, especially when using a Calcium based shock product that is loaded with fillers (see label, it’s only 50 something % active ingredient)... main reason why the pool is still cloudy / can’t see bottom at the end of this video. Also, I would ask if you have a balanced Stabilizer level ... this is most crucial in a Salt pool, where Unstabilized Chlorine is being produced. Without a stabilizer level (ideal is 50ppm), you won’t maintain a chlorine residual due to the sun burning up your chlorine level as quick as the salt generator produces it. Better off using a 99% (pure no fillers) Sodium Dichlor shock next time 🤓

      The salt system is designed to maintain a level of free chlorine, not to clear algae like this. However, Bob's statement of regular bleach is all you need to clear this algae, then the salt system can maintain it. Without a proper test kit and understanding of your CYA levels though, you wouldn't know how much free chlorine to maintain. Best to learn about the basic pool chemistry rather than "dump and pray" chemicals. That pool can be clear and still not totally sanitized and on the brink of algae breakout again

      @WhatsNextAmy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We did switch this one out and replace it with the same kind. Our metal parts were a little rusty and my husband did not want to take the chance. I don't know that we needed to change it but we found one off season for less then $100 and we turned it into a fish pond. We have a liner underneath but not on the sides. We were careful filling the dirt on the sides after it filled not to collapse it. We also made sure not to bury past the half way point my husband says that if it is buried to deep it may collapse in on itself. We have had this one up over a year and could not be happier with it as a pond. The pool before was salt water so it excelerated the rusting I believe. I hope this helps some with your questions. @richardparker3924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes.....saltwater systems will cause metal parts of the pool to corrode. And yes, you still have to "shock" the water as all the saltwater unit does is maintain chlorine in the pool. Everyone watching. A few things you must consider for safety. Many of these 7:1 or multifunction products contain chlorine with cyanauric acid.
    The product being used is Cal-Hypo. This has an effect on the pH of the water that will cause it to rise.
    It’s 56% chlorine vs. liquid pool shock which is 13%.
    The issue why a pool is green is due to algae (not enough chlorine initially.)
    This means there was a lack of residual sanitizer.
    Testing should be done before adding products because. “What we don’t know” can seriously hurt you.
    Something else to note is that, phosphates feed algae. Typically, a flock of flocculant is a wise idea when the pool looks like that.
    You also have to brush your pool regularly. @poolenvy

Used are well water, if you don't have well water that's fine just don't add fish for a bit so the chlorine dissipates. That is it, you just have to resist the urge to clean the bottom or mess with it. Just like a natural pond you do nothing. Every time I do I regret it. We love it. We have bass, brim, gold fish. Not that this is completely wrong, it is hit or miss. Might work; might not. Why does everyone think there are better ways to clear algae from a pool than to use proper pool chemistry? The answer is always the same. You test and adjust to put in range as necessary, PH and CYA; brush to remove all algae from surfaces including skimmers and every knook and cranny; remove and hand clean ladders and other accessories; ensure pump/filter is operating correctly and leave running. Then conduct SLAM (shock-level and maintain) using liquid chlorine or bleach based on your cya level until three criteria are met: pool is clear, cc's .5 or less, and the pool passes an overnight chlorine loss test (OCLT). The cal hypo used here can be used for SLAM, but it's harder to mix and it adds to your calcium hardness level, which you may not want to do.

      @@WhatsNextAmy Nothing wrong with the type of chlorine you used or buying chlorine and other chemicals for pools such as muriatic acid from hardware stores. You are right that pool stores teach hit or miss pool care methodology. Troublefreepool.com teaches the real pool chemistry. If you're forced to contunue maintaining this pool and learning some basic chemistry and doing it the right way that is also easy, check them out. It's all free. Go to their website; click on the tab for pool school; scroll to the bottom and download their short e-book and read about the "real deal" with pool chemicals and chemical levels. It saves money and time and effort fixing pools where problems can be avoided; and if you do go lax like we all do from time to time; they offer the right fixes too.

    Is the a stabilizer, ? Never had a pool and I got above the ground 20 ×4 I moved into this rental with it ,so anyways been here a week and my pool is now green, I bought a Costco vacuum n I'm still not sure if I'm using that right or have it put togather right.i took a sample of water to pool store they have a reading of 00 ,said I need stabilizer with the Clorox, I found some stuff here in the garage it's called angry eyes, im so lost what do I do?looks like a money pit to me with no hope.

      This is not a stabilizer and It definitely can be a money pit especially if your pump is not strong enough. This is no longer a pool we turned it into a pond and we are much happier. It has never been cleaner and the kids have actually swam in it. I am sorry I am not much help.

      You need to balance all of the chemicals first. Alkalinity, pH, stabilizer. The pool store should tell you how much of each chemical you have to add. Brush the sides and bottom of the pool thoroughly. Put in 3 times as much shock as you normally would. Run the pump 24/7 until it clears up. You may need to backwash your filter once or twice while this is happening. Then vacuum the pool to waste. You will probably need to add water while you do this. Test another water sample and balance appropriately. After this just regular maintenance should keep it clean. I know this sounds like a lot, but it is worth it. Alternatively, hire a professional, but be prepared to pay.
