A great way to show how good the GoPro Hero7 image stabilization is. It also shows the advances made by DJI between the Phantom 1 and 4. We've come a long way in a relatively short time
I modded my Phantom FC-40 v2.2.2 to the hill! Its sporting a turnigy 5200mah 11.4v LiHv battery (after much modding to the battery compartment and relocating the circuit boards.) Also have a bigger battery door, phantom 2 props, go pro hero 4 silver with Chinese gimbal, higher landing gear, on board volt meter and it's my favorite drone. 20 minutes flight time loaded with gimbal and hero 4, or 26 mins no payload. Beautiful footage. Iconic quadcopter. Love it! I bought it originally for $30 but ended up dumping hundreds into it. Worth it!
I remember the prototype Phantom videos on TH-cam roughly ten or more years ago with a guy flying out over the Niagara Falls showing jaw dropping photos and the reason why video was unusable because of jello effect. I now have my Mavic 2 Pro and love it, it is so far more advanced than that original drone.
Ya know what's nice about that Phantom 1? Geo-fence free. :) It's really nice to see an old school drone from DJI. Being this drone was released back in 2013, DJI's progression is off the charts. Im impressed with their R&D for sure. As for the Hero7 Black, it does do a nice job. I've got a Hero7 white. Might have to upgrade to a Black version. Thanks for sharing a look at the Phantom 1. Now time to put it back in its display case.
GP7 is nice for stabilization, but it's still got their trademark distorted bent horizon. Why can't GoPro figure out the lens correction trick like DJI?
There was some tilt on the footage, but it looked great. Is it time to dust off an older drone? Probably not. But it was definitely an interesting experiment.
That was a great test Kelly. Especially with the wind coming into play. I think the GoPro Hero 7 did great with the electronic stabilization. Looked very smooth.
Thanks Bill! Yes - forward motion was really good. It didn't keep level when moving sideways or when yawing, but it definitely looked as good as the original Zenmuse gimbal from my Phantom 2!
I think the stabilisation is fantastic on the H7 black. TH-cam kills the 1080p from this camera probably to do with the bit rate? so I always film in 2.7 or 4k.
Many thank's for sharing your experience. It's a shame that Gopro and Dji stoped their partership. Dji drones as evolved but never surpassed the quality of the gopro camera.... Did you take some pictures? If you have some of building façade i will be happy to take a look at them. Just let me know when it's a good time to get in touch
the images are quite stable. the images give a round horizon, through the lens of the gopro. I have a gopro 4 and a old phantom 2 without a camera. I think i try that ones
That was great. I have a phantom 3 standard the had an accident and gimbal not working. Think it might be a kink or something in the ribbon cable but got a new GoPro 10. Thinking about exchanging it for the camera that’s on there instead of fixing it.
I like to know if you can see it in real time. Is there an app you can download? I did like your video. Another question.: can’t you put in batteries with more MAh in the drone so you can fly longer? Is it possible to make a video where you show how to mount a camera? Thanks 11:19
You can use GoPro's app to see a real-time video feed, but the range isn't great You can definitely use a higher mAh battery. The extra weight will have an impact on flight time though.
Those hero7's looks amazing, I wish I had that when I was flying my syma x8 for aerial filming. So awesome you were able to get the old phantom back. Thanks for the demo and hope you have a great rest of your weekend.
hi, i have one phantom 1 too.. lwith gopro 3+ black, and many years ago im paint him in black... lol ... now i need buy a new shell.. i know where i can find shell for ph1 !?? thanx
Hey Kelly, a Nice test of the Hero 7 Black, the footage was very stable with no gimbal on the P1. I almost thought you were going to lose the P1 on the first takeoff, very squally, but the master took control!! Crazy flying for sure!
I recently acquired a dji phantom 1, it has a basic claw mount for one of the early models of gopros, I am interested in using the drone to take stills- I have two questions: is there a cheap, older go pro that will fit , and if there is, how far will it stay connected to my phone or tablet ? Or am I screwed, and have to just wait until the drone lands to see the footage
I have the phantom 1 and hero 3 silver. The fisheye effect and shaking is a bother for sure. I am totally impressed with the new hero 7, even the picture quality is way better, and I feel like it doesn't fisheye as much. Great video
I liked your concept, a lot of us have been thinking about this for some time. Now that GoPro has withdrawn from drone production, that being the Karma, it would be nice to see if DJI would interface a Gopro plugin, into their systems to allow real time vtx feed and a simple gimbal for mounting, that would allow you to move the gopro on a axis in flight. I have a gopro-7 that i use on some of my race drones and my xiaomi mi drone and limited by its one fixed position as used on my drones and my old Phantom 2.
Thumbs up ere' great demo - I used to own the Phantom 1 and was great fun at the time - GoPro worked really well. Still great way to fly to fly old drones without a app! Many thanks for sharing :)
This was awesome Kelly. I was thinking of doing the same thing with the Hero 7, testing it on some my older quads without gimbals. Great video Kelly, and good luck with SpinUp.
Footage looked stable, very watchable. It didn’t correct for the horizon like a gimbal. I don’t think it will ever replace a gimbal. To put an expensive camera on an old drone is pretty ballsy. I wouldn’t trust it. I did notice you did keep it nice and close. Good job Kelly.
I'm blown away by the image stabilization. Not sure it quite matches the mechanical versions, but it's really good. Reducing mechanical parts is generally a good thing. I have a dumb question. Although the image is very clear, there seems to be "fuzzy" artifacts in the image, particularly around a fixed object (goal post, Kelly, fixed camera) in the moving field. Do you know if this is from the GoPro stabilization or something else? Keep up the great work!
Thanks Kelly for sharing this. This reminds me of my Syma x5 W that I started with. It’s not stable but crashes with glorious results. It actually looks good with the Hero 7. Makes me want to get out my x8H to see how it flys after flying my Spark and Air. Thanks again for sharing.
Hello there! I have an old (but never used) phantom 1 drone. I am looking for a gimbal to use with this drone and a new GoPro (7 /8). Can you please suggest me something? Thank you for your help. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You really don't need the gimbal because GoPro Hero 7/8 both have built in image stabilization - but if you really want to put one on, I did a video about how to do it on a Bugs 3 drone a few years ago.
@@readysetdrone Thanks a lot for your answer. I am a professional photographer and I am starting now using drones. Before buying a new and expensive one, I would like to be more confident. Can I move the camera with a gimbal ?
Hello Kelly, great vid ! I own the Hero 7 too, but don't have a Mavic or so, I do have a Phantom 1 still lying around, I think this might be the thing to do this weekend, nice footage, surprisingly !:)
Very nice video Kelly i have never seen the Phantom 1. I just started with Drones 2years ago. I think it was a great idea to do this test Thanks the footage is better then some of the Drones with a gimbal
Great video Ken. I have two phantom 1s that anchor my quad collection. I'm glad I never sold them because it's nice to fly a decent DJI quad that's Geo fenced free. I use them as my beat around birds.
It actually looks really good considering there was no gimbal! You certainly wouldn't have had steady footage with a non gimbaled aircraft and a camera with no stabilization.
i think its a good choice if you didnt have a drone made for video with a gimbal and had some other uses besides just popping it on a bugs 3 etc..in my case i dont own any action cams so i would likely choose this one ..nice vid thanks
Watching this video and having own a spark and air and now a Mavic 2 zoom. I had to admit that DJI has come a long way since the phantom 1. Having flown the Mavic 2 and air and spark and even a friend phantom 4pro, the phantom 1 is like a dinosaur compared to the new drones from DJI lol 😂
Dude you have a perfect heli pad behind you yet you are using the dead grass 🤔 why would ya go to the field without charging the batteries first? And do keep the quad away from your body parts (head) 😂😂.
The GoPro 7 on the Phantom 1 with no gimbal looked way more stable than your cameraman's footage. :)
ha! my thoughts exactly
Dang son
It’s a kid but you’re right
A great way to show how good the GoPro Hero7 image stabilization is.
It also shows the advances made by DJI between the Phantom 1 and 4. We've come a long way in a relatively short time

I guess if there was made a youtube for drone fans...this video could hit trending #1!
I just did this yesterday too!!! Except on the Mavic 2 Pro! Great minds think alike.
I remember the prototype Phantom videos on TH-cam roughly ten or more years ago with a guy flying out over the Niagara Falls showing jaw dropping photos and the reason why video was unusable because of jello effect. You obviously dont know that you can change the fish eye in the settings to be narrow with 0 bend
There was some tilt on the footage, but it looked great. Is it time to dust off an older drone? Probably not. But it was definitely an interesting experiment.
Shoot, I was supposed to count my comments?
That was a great test Kelly. Especially with the wind coming into play. I think the GoPro Hero 7 did great with the electronic stabilization. Looked very smooth.

Yeah, I'm having a lot of fun with the 7 Black, my first & only GoPro & I'm pretty impressed, thanks for the video!

I bought the hero 7 black and I’m totally impressed with it. Your video looks great.
The GoPro 7 footage looked Great! It definitely smoothed things out a lot, however, still nothing quite like a gimbal shot.
the images are quite stable. the images give a round horizon, through the lens of the gopro. I have a gopro 4 and a old phantom 2 without a camera. I think i try that ones

You should do a comparison video with the oldest Gopro you have and the 7 on the original phantom.
That Gopro did an amazing job there! Very stable image. Impressive!
That GoPro is amazing. Really like it. 👍👍👍👍👍
I think its great for drone beginners to get them in the world of drones. Great video
Seems great! i would like to watch it with the linear view-mode of the gopro :)
It looks very smooth and clear
Hi - where can one purchase the gopro mount?
hi, i have one phantom 1 too.. lwith gopro 3+ black, and many years ago im paint him in black... lol ... now i need buy a new shell.. i know where i can find shell for ph1 !?? thanx

Can you do it again with gopro session
I just purchased a Hero 7 Black and will mount to my Phantom 3 Standard. any recommendations? Thanks for the post.
Surprisingly stable footage for a non gimbal drone. Even with the tilt, not unwatchable. A reboot for older drones? Na, don't think so.
How l connect gimbal with gopro hero 8 ? thanks for your response
That was a fascinating test and very interesting results. I loved this, thank you for sharing sir.

Wow, that's impressive stabilization.
Hello What would I need to turn a hero 7 into FPV? What transmitter?ty
So I have a Question just brought the Tello drone it weighs 80 g do you have to register it with the FAA
Thumbs up ere' great demo - I used to own the Phantom 1 and was great fun at the time - GoPro worked really well. Still great way to fly to fly old drones without a app! Many thanks for sharing :)
How did u mount that GoPro? I have p2 and I don't have hero 3 or 4 for h3.3d no more lol
Very cool idea! Very interesting results.
This was awesome Kelly. I was thinking of doing the same thing with the Hero 7, testing it on some my older quads without gimbals. Great video Kelly, and good luck with SpinUp.
can you make a review of the new dji osmo pocket?
That hero 7 really is very nice. Thanks for review Kelly.

Phantom and a GoPro, I just subscribed!

Good idea and probably better on the pocket book
Kelly did you do the compass calibration ???? ...I have 2 Phantom -1.1.1 's ...with maybe 3 flights on both..in hard cases...still in mint condition.
Looks very stable. No vibration from the Phantom.

Can I move the camera with a gimbal ?
8:20 - start of footage with Hero 7
Put some 9450 props on the P1. @ 9:25 struggles to stay in air. End quote.
What was the other battery ? (not the DJI one) ... Thanks !
Really like the footage. Super stable. Excellent video Kelly
GoPro Hero7 is awesome.
Since the phantom fc40 came with a 2.4ghz wifi camera, I should have no issues using the gopro app for fpv on my go pro hero 4 correct?
You will have 2 issues - range and lag.
I just picked up a mint DJI phantom 1 with FC40 camera. I learned no app available it seems? Any suggestions for FPV flight?
LOOKS GREAT!!!
Not bad not bad at all. The video was pretty decent. Can’t wait for spinup. 5 days left to spinup. This will be my first drone event.
glad you made this video!
Great video Kelly! Pretty cool
Very smooth! Actually a little surprised
I know that platinum was your favorite drone for a little while now that you flew the Evo and the Mavic pro two which is your favorite now go to drone
Is P1 drone has GPS
Very nice and smooth!
The phantom 1 are available
Hello Kelly, great vid ! I own the Hero 7 too, but don't have a Mavic or so, I do have a Phantom 1 still lying around, I think this might be the thing to do this weekend, nice footage, surprisingly !:)

and how old dj phantom has to come home❤
Great job. Video footage was very stable👍
Looks good to me, maybe i'll get a phantom one
Nice work !! glad SpinUp went well !!
Amazing footage considering that there’s no gimbal, but a bit of fisheye, maybe try in another mode and it won’t have as much.
Very cool video. Thx
I love that setup! Can you still buy phantom 1? I live in the UK and I want one, so if you know someone hit me up
Was very impressed with the quality of the hero 7 with no gimbal 👍🏻
New challenge: Now add a 2 axis gimbal and Phantom 2 props to your Phantom 1. Then do a side by side footage test with a Phantom 4.
good show!
Pretty smooth. Thanks for sharing this video.
Third!
Funny guy is here😜
Perfect مدهش🇰🇼👍
Keep em coming Kelly. Looks like you could use a Ronin S ,for your camera man. What about it DJI? Send the man a Ronin S.
Yeah!
It actually looks really good considering there was no gimbal! You certainly wouldn't have had steady footage with a non gimbaled aircraft and a camera with no stabilization.
Better than the original camera that came with the Phantom 1, but still not as good as a Phantom 2 with Zenmuz 3D gimbal and GoPro
My first drone is a P4, (and I am happy that I didn’t start with a P1, to difficult) honestly I prefer the camera on the P4. 🤗👍
Not the point of the video
Lol.. I actually brought my phantom 1 along with this idea in mind... if someone could get it working correctly.
i think its a good choice if you didnt have a drone made for video with a gimbal and had some other uses besides just popping it on a bugs 3 etc..in my case i dont own any action cams so i would likely choose this one ..nice vid thanks

WOW PHANTOM1~~
Good 👍
Amazing, just didn’t like the “fish-eye” view. My old Phantom 2 Vision Plus has the same problem.
this idiot doesnt know theres a setting to turn it off
Your hand held footage could use a hero7, I could nearly follow it!
and this is why DJI went to proprietary batteries and software.... More sales. I miss my P1....
Sweet
Looks stable to me
Still looks ok for the age mate 😉😉😉😉
Dude you have a perfect heli pad behind you yet you are using the dead grass 🤔 why would ya go to the field without charging the batteries first? And do keep the quad away from your body parts (head) 😂😂.
