Hey Dino, I'm from 'the other half' of Royal College. I couldn't speak a word in English when I entered Royal in 2002 & I'm forever grateful to the college for all the opportunities given to me. I find it quite IRONIC & CONTRADICTORY when you guys (the elite English speaking class or whatever) make the biggest sound when the topic is about racial harmony, gender equality etc. But, when the topic is 'social status', you guys are the most discriminative! (depicted very well, when you called it the other half of Royal). You guys are the masters of discrimination, for example when it's about an Anandian & a Thomian. This is a sign of regressive colonial attitudes being carried forward to 21st century by the same set of schools the British formed (although those schools were world class & ahead of its time back then. That's why the Royal charter was granted to Royal College). You'd better visit Europe & see how each country values & respects their own language (French, German, Spanish, Polish etc.) & they use English only as a tool for international business, relations & education. I believe the value system of these colonial era schools (including the Buddhist schools of that time which simply imitated schools like RC, STC etc) need an upgrade. Then what can you say about the prejudice towards the privately educated students at state universities. Are you justifying the brutality of the country bumpkins in state universities.
You do know this is a comedy bit, right? You have to learn to take a joke for what it is...a freaking joke.If you know anything about humor, you should know that it comes from dark places; Topics such as colonialism and stereotypes, but making a fucking joke about it doesn't undermine the issue. And I agree,English shouldn't be used as a symbol of social status but it is and should be considered a skill, it's called being bilingual. And the difference between Sri Lanka and the European Countries is that sizable populations of those countries can actually speak English or at least the bare minimum required to carry a conversation while most of us can't get past our name and age. And we can't shy away from the fact that Sri Lankans, most of us anyway, are really bad at English and that is a huge issue, we can't just ignore English because Sinhala is great or because promoting English is a "'Colonial Mindset''. Whether you like it or not, the moment you step out of the comforting, nationalistic bubble of Sri Lanka, you are gonna need English, and that's not an opinion, that's a Fact.
The problem here,in Sri Lanka (for the most part) is that students CHOOSE not to study English to same extent as the other subjects, they CHOOSE to cut the English Period and/or the English Day Competitions, they CHOOSE not to take General English, even in the A/Ls seriously and they CHOOSE not to sit for the General English Paper in the A/Ls (Obviously, not all students are like this but most of them are, trust me,I went to DS and we aren't exactly known for our English skills). And those same students try to devalue or demonize English as a '' Colonial Atrocity'' or that it's ''against our culture'' or the dumbest argument yet, "we already have a great language, why should we learn another one? Hi Dino, enjoyed your TH-cam production. Great stuff mate. Many of the Corea's were great Thomians in the 60's. STC was the first school to bring in Hela Sinhala. Ariyasena Ahabudu, Mr. Koparahewa (Father of Prof. Koparahewa) and several other Sinhalese scholars were hired to teach at STC by Warden (Canon) de Saram. STC thought Greek and Latin, together with English, Sinhalese and Tamil. The boys had no segregation and mixed together talking English as the common language despite the three distinct language streams. Many of us still enjoy reading Milton, Pope, Austen, Bronte sisters, Keats, Shelly and Byron, great classics sadly lost to most other schools globally. Nearly all of us were exempt from TOEFL or other English test to enter Universities in UK, USA, Australia etc. We were classed as Native English speakers.
Hi Imtiaz, amazing points you brought up. However, remember that these jokers are simply trying to make an earning out of insults and disparage. So, don't bother.
@imtiaz Issadeen Perfectly said sir! This is just a sad attempt to insult St Thomas College. Don't forget it was D.S. Senanayake (a Thomian) who fought for our independence.
Mr.Dino, This is a reason why we are still a developing country, even we independent from the UK since 1948, still half of Sri Lankans could not swipe up British DNA from their body. Be a Sri Lankan, this is a singhala country , be honest to your country

And Dino acts as if he had known the meanings of those five words before reading the script! ha ha... I don't know whether it's me, but I really don't get it why they make such a big deal out of being fluent in English or going to a Colombo school. I got my education from one of the Colombo schools which some people consider to be the best girls' school in Sri Lanka. However, other than respecting the school, using its name to feel superior, laugh at others or highlight the social class is so shallow and I thought people don't do it anymore. Obviously I was mistaken.
Well, apparently they have nothing else to speak for themselves, only the achievements of past pupils and the money bags of the parents who got them into the school

You’re right Haritha. These self proclaimed stand up comedians are still malnourished adults who still haven’t ‘left’ their schools. 😂 These people still have colonial attitudes & are extremely discriminative .
Hey Brother Dino ... Thomian's are not only good in English - They also good in Sinhala too .. current Head at Sinhala Language Department - Colombo campus; Professor Sandagomi Koparahewa is a Thomian (He had studied Bio-science and just did ALs with Arts subjects within few months away from the exam unlike those who studied arts subjects over 2 years!) and STC was indeed a cradle for "Hela Hawula" lead by schloar Kumaratunga Munidasa and STC had produced one and only person in the world who did "Classics (Latin, Greek and English) along with Sinhala" language is also a Thomian (Former Warden @ STC). Making Sinhala a state language by SWRD was not a mistake as the majority of th country had benefitted comming out in the "Post Colonial Era" and that had lead to more socio, economic and political transformation known as "Destruction of Bamunukulaya" - Thomians do not have the numbers like many other schools - but they are good enough to compete others with sheer quality wether in sports or studies and unlike many schools have the liberty of preserving and grooming different persons for different tasks (for sports or studies) - Thomians have to do everything they can as there is no room for such separation. (In recent past - The most influential Architect title had won by a former Thomian - Dr. NGR Perera was a good example for this fact as he had Captained College in numerous sports and got into University also) Thomians represents all stratas of the contemproray Sri Lankan society all though it is truly is a "selective entry" boys' Private Anglican School, it offers true equal opportunity for all students irrespective of their religion, ethinicity, caste or creed. The objective of writting this not to offend anyone, but to forward facts ..... To my knowledge, STC is the only school that do not have a name board (sign board) - because it's signature evidently does not simply need any ....
Dinesh Chandraratne But SWRD's action affected poor children of poor parents who can't afford to go to Colombo super schools to learn english. They had to learn everything in Sinhala while SWRD's children went abroad to study..Today Sinhala is the state language but have you seen any banner or shop name in Sinhala? Any job interview done in Sinhala? I have seen government university students from rural areas drop their courses because it is very hard for them to study in english. I'm not blaming or disrespecting Thomian's. But I'm blaming SWRDs action..His action didn't affect his children, grandchildren or children at Colombo 7 schools..But it affected other poor children of our country. If Sri Lanka is like China, Japan or Korea then I'll not say anything. Because people of those countries don't care about any other language than their own language. But in our country english is needed more than Sinhala.
@Dinesh Chandraratne Being a Thomian myself I agree with what you have said above 100%... Except the fact that SWRD did a favor for the majority of Sri Lankan's by making sinhala as the state language. Have to side with @Ush 1000 and Dino on that one. In my opinion it caused a rift in our society, Dividing individuals as those who spoke English as 'Posh' and those who couldn't as 'Gode'. And because of this, the majority who are perceived as Gode, Hates those who could actually speak in English and often made fun of (This is the case in most Govt schools) and those who speaks fluent English often look down on those who can't. Personally I feel our current society would have been more civilized and better off If English 'was' the state language. One could actually wonder whether there is any correlation between the language and behavior when it comes to do with being civilized? But according to my observation there is a significant difference between people who speaks fluent English and Sinhala and how they behave in public (Talking about school children here but applicable to adults as well). In conclusion English would have been better as the state language.
Dear Shenal, I do not want to argue on SWRD's work (as you are a Thomian like SWRD himself) and his actions and consequences of making Sinhala a state languge. Aftermath of that event had lead to irreservsible chain reactions and society has move a lot since then. I have a humble request from you to find deep meaning why Mr.Martin Wickramasinghe wrote that very phrase which i have also quoted; "Bamunu kulaya bindawetima" although he has sent his son to study at STC - the same College you also had opportinity to study being a 'selective entry" from the society - Its very interesting that you are refering English language as a modem to be civilized. Don't you know the fact that civilized Royals (not Royalist of Royal college - but Royal Families in Europe) resorted to use FRENCH instead of their native languages as it was CULTUR to speak FRENCH than their own while the non-royals, servents and masses were resorted to use English, German, Russian). If not the works and efforts of people like Chaucer, the language of English will not be there for you and I to write here. If the Natzies would have won the WW2, you and I may have to write this in German. In future may be your grand children may have to learn some thing like Mandarin - whos knows what will happen. Language is not an altar for worship but an essential tool that will lead and mould your actions and interactions in the society. Language contributes a lot to form superstructure of the society - one can learn many languages according to his ability, exposure and other factors but will always thinking just in his native language beter than any languages he is fluent with. That's why your native language plays an important role in your "thinking pattern". If English is your native language, you could literarily be an Englishman not like the Sting's song.
Bro it seems you have not got the point I was trying to make above. I'm talking about how his actions affected the whole lankan society in today's context, Be it urban or rural. Yes, I understand how making Sinhala was important after being a colony under the British and how the language itself played a role in promoting patriotism. But 70 years into the future you can clearly see that Sinhala doesn't get used much in majority of Sri lankan businesses, in the medical field, engineering field etc. Like @Ush stated even interviews are kept in English. Bringing back to my point where, 'IF' English was the state language it would have given all individuals equity across the country, And an equal chance of getting good jobs without a struggle and would have been evaluated based on purely on their skills and qualifications. We both know that outside Colombo, students struggle to learn English and this could have been prevented if the said act was not implemented. You also say you don't want to argue on SWRD's work, Then why are we even having this conversation in the first place? Also I feel like it's irrelevant to bring up about European monarchs into this discussion because it was another time period and a different society. Undoubtedly knowing multiple languages always comes in handy .I personally believe every Sri Lankan needs to know Sinhala but at the same time English as well since it's a global lingua franca and In my opinion it should have been given more priority over Sinhala.
Lets not talk Bullshit the Sinhala only act created the ethnic conflict with Tamils and Sinhalese, Burgher community left the country, we inherited graduates who didnt have the necessary English language skills to work in the emerging private sector after the 1977 free market economy and overseas which in turn was one of the major reasons for the outbreak of the marxist revolution by JVP which resulted so much destruction to the society.....Im a sinhalese myself but this act was one of the most selfish things a politician has done for his own benefit screwed up the country beyond repair, just because your a Thomian don't try to justify SWRD. This is a guy who ate rice and curry with fork and spoon did this only for his own mileage but in the end it caused his life and the future of this once promising country

Whats wrong with not understanding complicated english words? Im a english literature enthusiast,n havent heard those. Pretty sure most natives wont understand them. Are u suggesting that superior knowledge of English means superior intelligence? SWRD was right to bring the sinhala act, only he should have included tamil as well, which would have stopped even the war.

HAHAHA great stuff! :D
I think he presented a comedy act, take it as so.. not as hard as you all HV taken... lol
Dino's trying so hard to be Gehan 😂

Why is this under a different YT channel?
Hi Akshika, we have just started a brand new TH-cam channel. Unfortunately all the other channels and videos on TH-cam are not official uploads. We'll gradually start building up an archive, and also have brand new stuff on here in the coming days and weeks!
Oh all right. I am coming to Sri Lanka next month, hopefully I will find some tickets to watch your next show. Keep up the good work. It is just fabulous.
Akshika Wijesundara Thank you ❤️
Tickets will be available from Monday at our website stagelightandmagic.com or the Wendt lionelwendt.org
Dino, Make a style of your own machan bro dude. Gehan's style doesn't go with your appearance and ascents and expressions and all. You've got talent, make a style of your own.
true ironman fan spotted.
Make *America* great again - Trump
Make *Sinhala* great again - SWRD
Sword did it for the vote ! That's all!
FYI the war started during the royalist's administration
Brilliant comedy, love it
Temple trees also just trees neh
Good stuff! cheers!
Issa joke!
Machan your point is so dumb. Swrd was right to introduce a one language only act BUT.. he should have included other languages in it too.
Well actually the war started thanks to the royalist who brought the open market economy
Hahaha! Good one :D
Learn to take a fucking joke, people. He is not talking about political stances or policies or legislation, he's making jokes ,you know...the thing comedians are fucking supposed to do. He insulted your school ? So what? Grow a pair and take as what it is...a joke.
Whether you like it or not,Jokes aren't always progressive or PC or other bullshit like that.

I don't understand this whole Sinhala joke..
Udayantha Warnasuriya Oo I didn’t know that. But now I live in Germany and I met a lot of Tamil people who have come during the war. Obviously the state language here is not English. But everyone has managed to learnt it overtime.😉
