Looks gorgeous. I would love to play this with a Flightstick and a Keyboard like the old days. The drift feature is pretty sweet, could really equalize the combat between shielded and unshielded ships if TIEs can do it more effectively than Rebel ships. The fact there are SLAMs proves that the Devs actually played the old games and really know how great they were. Very intrigued by the heavy cannon weapon, too. Carving up a capital ship at close quarters will be incredible.
In fact if they make TIEs fundamentally more maneuverable, it will become significantly unbalanced towards the Empire. All your shields are useless when the enemy can comfortably sit on your tail and keep hitting you until you are dead. Remeber my words, when the forums burst into flames with "Empire OP" topics.
Fleet battles looks like a remake of ClassicFront 2 space systems, with the Frigates and Cap ship Hardpoints and its available offline, I have a very good feeling about this!
Do the ships actually have target-able hard points like in OG Battlefront 2? If its just 3 modules on the ship without the ability to target things like turbolasers, engines, laser and ion cannons, I'm gonna be a little bit disappointed.
It's a spiritual successor of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter. XvT Series (4 games and an expansion) was a major block buster franchise of the 90s which was a super in depth Space Simulation set in the Star Wars universe. This is a lot more, how should I say... Dumbed down for the modern generation of knuckle draggers but it's far deeper flight mechanic wise than anything a AAA studio has felt they can do for the last 20 years. In the 90s on PC Simulation titles like MechWarrior, Freespace, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and Wing Commander were the PC Exclusive killer apps you could not get on console and were responsible for why everyone who owned a home computer in the 90s owned a mandatory Joystick. Hard to believe that for a while if you game used all the keyboard buttons 3x's over (Holding Alt, Ctrl, or Shift) and came with a mini phone book manual you were almost guaranteed to have a massive hit! Now It's $40. In 2002 the Gold Standard of Space Simulators came out, Freespace 2! Game of the Year, 10/10's, 100% scores. And it flopped. That was the last AAA Space simulator from a major studio. I think this $40 budget game is a test to see if Space Sims are able to make any kind of come back. I bet if we get a Squadrons 2 it'll be like Battlefront in scope. This almost feels like a proof of concept to the executives who no doubt were hesitant to sign off on it as it's a dead genre. (EA use to make Wing Commander, a major franchise in the genre back then)
@@gungriffen I just hope their "fleet battles" aren't just starfighters with destroy the control point inserted as "capital ships" instead of actual interaction with and between the fighters and the "capital ships". Never has a game more screamed "DLC!" to me lol. Obviously I want as many ships as they'll put in the game (B WINGS DAMMIT), but what I think would be really cool is a "Cinematic"/"Capture" mode. Lots of awesome community content could be generated from that.
totally agree. no one ever mentioned that there are more than 8 ships from the start. So either its delayed free content which is fair but why launch a half ready game since 8 ships will be boring hardcore since you cannot swap within a single class. Or there are DLC'S coming which explains the lower starting price but they will generate money over the time with additional ships and probably design features. But honestly i dont want to customize my interior of an xwing or anything. I would have loved to design change the exterior. That also would have brought more depth to the game when changing wings, guns, etc. that have different effects and visuals. Quite sobering so far for me... :(
@@diarmuid1213 bf2015 had more variety so it was Worth it. Here you only have First Person space battles. Not Worth to me. But thats up for everyone to decide themselves.
They're unbalanced when a team doesn't understand the idea of swarming. Even Slave 1 can be taken out in only 2 waves with 3 ships hitting it at the same time, 1 wave if Slave 1 has no chance to use the sonic charge, or the attacking wave is out of range. The idea is to swarm. Have 1 interceptor lay chase to the hero, and 2 fighter class ships to cover the flanks. Add more ships for faster hero destruction.
They had to fall so they can learn to walk. With the updates to battlefront, fallen order and squadrons I think some confidence has been restored with a good amount of people.
Phrosties They had no faith in fallen order, that was all because respawn insisted they wanted to make a game after their successes. I strongly believe that Microsoft being interested in acquiring the license when time is up has a strong validity to it.
Since we have "classes" the plan would seem to be EA selling ships that have all the same stats as the basic starfighters but looking very different. The name, "squadrons" also doesn't lock them into any specific era so you could have Clone Wars or even the Mandalorian War campaigns. That way, EA avoids the P2W accusations but knows that people would pay for an "Interceptor" that is a Clone Wars era Jedi Starfighter which functions the same as an A-wing.
@@SandyCheeks1896 Vulture droids would be unlikely since they have no cockpits for EA to monetize and the UI would just be displayed over the players screen as they'd be "seeing" through the droids eyes. But there were non-droid starfighters like the Belbullab starfighters and bombers which were used by the CIS.
TauridBorn hopefully it will be like agents in valorant. Where after a certain amount of xp will unlock another ship, like the B-wing, maybe the ghost or falcon, dooku’s Geonosian ship maybe(?), and any other ship. Maybe they each have some kind of different passive that isn’t too op so it isn’t a kind of pay to win.
Look’s great so far. I would like to see some more uncut gameplay though, especially from the Capital Ship mode. With that mode, it’s got to be a huge battle with loads of AI ships, especially if both team only has 5 players each.
I could see ai having to fill a 12 on 12 role for fighters only and maybe for objective section 4 bombers 4 fighters 4 interceptors ai. Balancing would be interesting If a team has 5 a wings with the intent of just hunting fighters they would go into round 2 with no human bombers making their attack ineffective. I'm wondering if there will be a death penalty for killing yourself to respawning. Or if you will have to fly back to land and deploy another fighter which wastes time. I think this could be really deep strategy wise if they play it smart.
That little shield thing you were wondering at is for aiming. In the trailer if you watch it, in one frame when the player is firing at the TIE, the icon for the TIE is dead center, as if it was in a crosshair. It is a targeting computer or whatever you would call it.
Everything screams this being a modern update/reimagining to the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games and that's not a bad thing. Hopefully there will be a wider assortment of flyable ships than just the stock Rebellion and Empire models. TIE Defenders, E-Wings, Assault Gunboats, Torrents, ARC-170's would be cool.
It seems like the multiplayer mode of this game is what they had originally envisioned X-Wing vs TIE Fighter being (but weren't able to pull off at the time).
As a fan of those games? I'd honestly say everything but the graphics seems like a worse version of those games. The flight model looks like it's trying to crudely ape something like E:D rather than trying to stick to Star Wars, and why have stupid gimmicks like turrets and tractor beams unless the core dogfighting and ship-managing mechanics aren't fun enough? In fact why have them even then? It just detracts from it being a Star Wars experience and turns it into something different with a Star Wars coat of paint on it.
I mean you can.... just don't expect it to be a coup de grâce like in Return. altho if they make on-target collisions count as damage to said targets, that'd be sweet
Oh man, a modern successor to X-Wing? The nostalgia feels from some of the cockpit effects had me hooked right away. I hope they do a similar system to the X-wing series. The full 360, somewhat scripted way those missions worked would lend itself really well to player-generated missions. They have the SLAM?! Here's hoping for some Assault Gunboat/Missile Boat content at some point, along with as many of the plethora of ships from X-Wing Alliance as humanly possible. It'd be unfair to ask for ALL of those ships, but I can dream. Perfect opportunity to canonize some new ships.
It was an amazing game, I played the hell out of it back in the day. A few of these developers are familiar with that title, since the cotpicks looks just like they did back then, and I am sure the line "Balance of Power" said during the trailer was no coincidence.

I was looking for someone that pointed that out, try flying close to a star destroyer in XvT, you'll see if you last long, especially alone in the harder difficulty setting, plus near some places you get your weapons jammed too
Delta 23 no, it’s to make money, and people were already forgetting those games. This game might bring more interest to the star fighter genre of Star Wars games.
ISDs in X-Wing Alliance would chew you up even if you came in a Y-wing or a B-wing. He seems to think they only have turbolasers and not hundreds of point defense guns just waiting for a foolish pilot to *try* to take out the shield generators. They even would shoot down your missiles and torpedoes forcing you to get close which puts you in range.
The original 1993 X-wing game (and subsequent games) had the exact same resource management mechanic shown here. It was a staple in space fighter sims throughout the 90s, back when the genre was most popular. Super glad to be seeing a revival of that - I'd have expected EA to give us a much more watered down experience, in all honestly.
For the power bars you were talking about: Blue = Engines Red = Weapons - the two |'s on the side of the triangles appear to me to represent weapons, also the TIE hud only has red and blue power bars, which would imply engines and weapons) Green = Shields - In the HUD's of the ships with shields, shields are green, , also the C icon on the power bar represents kinda a shield around a ship, and as mentioned above the TIE ships had no green bar power bad because they had no shields.
@@delta2372 And yet the took everything from Tie Fighter and Alliance. the SLAM engine was on the Missile Boat. Plus it got this X-wing player interested.
Oof I just noticed that Edit: actually, I think that might be based on customization. At 19:04 you can see the correct version. I would assume one of the upgrades might change the way the cockpit looks. That’s certainly caught my attention
What I want for pilot customization For the rebel pilots: •old clone wars era pilot armor(phase 1 and 2) •different bounty hunter armor (Like what obi wan wore when he faked his death or what Leia's wore rescuing han) •different alien species: ithorians, zabrak, twlek, rodian, kaleesh, duro, harch, etc For imperials: •different sqaudron markings •experimental pilot armors •special forces •royal guard pilot armor(and royal guard tie interceptors)
@EckhartsLadder 14:10 actually shows how we will control the shunting between the energy - it is arrow key (left, right, up, down). It is visible in all the other cockpits as well, but here it is completely obvious. That is why you cannot make head or tail out of the pictograms. Because they do not mean "shield, engine, weapons" but they show arrows. Lore-wise, it would make sense to have 4 buttons in the cockpit as well. Left arrow = engine power (blue) Up arrow = weapons (red) Right arrow = shields (green/turqoise) down arrow = reset to nominal blue/red colours also match the SW Galaxies layout... This is completely the same way as it is in for example Elite Dangerous. Moreover, 17:20 "nimble deflector" seems to hint at a possibility to shift energy between each shields (nimble will shift it faster), I reckon conversion shield will do something with that too. It is also hinted in each of the cockpit of the shielded ships. (TIE Reaper = two little arrows next to the shields) This also in line with SW Galaxies and all the shout outs during space battles in movies.
@@supergkop5678 I do agree with him saying it's stolen as the disney canon has been lazy and outright boring, everything is so nerfed and outside a few ships there aren't any good news desgins, only the U wing and tie reaper are actually cool designs and arguably the ressurgance ISD but everything else is either hideous or from the original film's

My classic star wars were always the x-wing and tie fighter series and I'm overjoyed that this is looking more and more akin to that game right down to the power management format. I can't wait
EA once again exaggerated what a game features. You can't have "massive fleet battles" with 10 starfighters, 4 frigates and 2 capital ships. That's a minor skirmish at best and it won't capture that Star Wars feeling unless they toss in another 30 or so AI star fighters and some more frigates and vessels. As for the "strategy"... well, the choice of offense, defense or support class is just barely "strategic". We're talking Team Fortress 2 levels of planning where you just have a HWGuy, Medic and an Engineer to guard the base. So yeah, very little thought needed. Fortunately, SW:S doesn't have any competing multiplayer starfighters games or else I'd not bother to buy it.
What would be cool to have is something similar to the Post Stall Maneuver from Ace Combat 7 that can be done but requires a specific speed limit and aircraft. What do you guys think? I'm sure not many people know what I'm talking about but if you do search up the Post Stall Maneuver from Ace Combat 7
@@RomanHistoryFan476AD I Think you are missing the point......also they literally are flying like they are in the atmosphere. But the PSM was a instance based effect that required precise speed and angle of attack.
Eck: The yellow dot in the center of the aiming screen is the area you can see in front of you. Things at the edges of your "radar" are behind you. Look at 6:44. The red dot to the very left of that center dot is the Tie Bomber that just took a missile hit in front of you. It's the exact same radar display used in the older video games.
just play LucasArts game X-wing vs Tie Fighter to see what we will be getting it has SLAM engine on the Missle Boat and Tractor Beams on the Tie Defender. All the ships that have shields can be adjusted forward or back, you can use shield energy to boost lasers or engine speed or vise versa. Also look at the X-wing game and Tie Fighter game, BTW Tie Fighter is the best Star Wars fighter sim with a great story that also includes you working with Vice Admiral Thrawn to save the Emperor from the Traitor Admiral Zaarin. Game comes with a story book following the recruit you play as all the way up to the rank of Emperor's Hand if you do the secret missions.
And is also the only single player star wars game I know that is 100% centered around the Empire and shows their point of view. You know, the thing they were bragging about when they announced Battlefront II's campaign and then the campaign only had 3-4 missions as an actual Imperial. And its also the game that introduced the Tie Defender, lets hope we can see one at least in campaign.
the maneuver at 9:25 is a zero gravity mechanic used first in the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series and again in the expanse sifi show it was also attempted in Babylon 5 however special effects were limited and failed. the idea is thrust engines dont need to keep burning once desired speed is reached until something slows it down. so that means that a spacecraft can continue on its coarse then using maneuver thrusters at full power as main engines are off to spin the ship to face what ever direction wanted but still moving in the original direction inertia was taking the spacecraft.
11:18 Eck the red one is weapons. Shields is green. Also I think that middle one with a triangle with three lines below it is proton torpedo (Edit: ok apparently it was "seeker warheads")
Yeah, you can tell which management bar represents which system, as they're all color coordinated. The speed is the same color as the speedometer. Weapons the same color as the laser charge display. And shields the same color as the ship health's shield indicator (most is green, but I think I saw a cyan one in there too, and the power management bar was the same different color).
This and skate 4 was all they had. Skate 4 is amazing but they showed nothing. This looks interesting but not enough to fill ea’a usual game release density
@EckhartsLadder The shield icon on the HUD denotes a capital ship. The shield will most likely be in the fleet battle mode when you lose the fighter battle and must defend your friendly cruisers. The large red box icons are either enemy capital ships of the flagship.
When he's talking about the shields and blaster energy it's a mechanic straight out of the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter games in the mid 90s. And it's clear Eckharts has never hear of those games. Actually all the things he says "I wonder..." about the cockpits is already known to anyone who played those games. He should just ask an older mate.
I know, right! Kids these days. I was sitting there correcting him the whole video. This is pretty much X-wing vs. Tie Fighter updated with new graphics and some gameplay tweaks. I am sooooo in.
6:33 I assume that it is a minimap and the individual icons resemble your team's capital ships, the enemy's capital ships, or main objectives. Anytime the icon is in the center of the screen, the pilot is facing the ship or objective, and anytime the icon is on the edge of the screen it means the ship or objective is to the side or behind you.
I was cautiously optimistic upon watching the trailer, but after your breakdown I'm genuinely excited. Never stop never stopping, man. It's not rambling when it's informative.
I'm glad TIE Fighters are finally a threat again. Before this they were only intimidating in A New Hope before legends slandered them into the worst ship in Star Wars.
well they were designed to keep the galaxy in-check, and the average person in the galaxy couldn't do shit to a TIE Fighter. So they 100% make sense as a mass-produced, highly effective, fighter... against things that are completely unable to stop them. I.e. 99.9% OF THE GALAXY.
Doing the drifts and crazy manoeuvres would be down to the inertia dampers. Trying to go that fast and pull those moves, would result it a red/black out without them.
Shields were only on the defenders, not the regular TIEs. Maybe they could bring an option for that in with another option for the New Republic too but I wouldn't hold my breath because the TIE Defender was Thrawn's baby and he was trying to sell the idea to the emperor while tarkin and krennic were selling the death star to him. Then Thrawn disappeared. That's why we never see them beyond rebels.
This may not be possible for the fleet battles, but what if you could rearrange your capital and support ships? Moving them around into different fleet positions and compositions? Possibly replacing a certain frigate or capital ship for another? This could compliment your squadrons strategy and loadout. This could all be done in that prep phase inside your capital ship that they showed beforehand.
I’m not sure how I feel about the trail the star fighters leave behind them, I understand if they’re making a sharp turn and you see the trail but I’m not a fan of seeing the trail in space, besides that the game looks amazing!!!
I think it's probably there for gameplay purposes, giving you a visual sense of enemy vectors at distance for you to lead your shots since I presume they aren't going to give you a smart targeting reticule that gives you a shot-leading estimate. The sim elements they describe in this make it sound like a lot of things are going to be more manual, so the game is going to have to communicate information to the players differently.
In response to your question about if looking around your cockpit without VR would work: In Elite Dangerous they get around this by having you click in the left joystick (I play on PlayStation) to toggle head gimbaling or standard flight controls.

Hope TrackIR works too. I can't wait for it to come out, I've wanted pretty much this format of game for a long time, and so far it looks great!
That's the first thing I said when I saw it. If the flight/ physics model is better than classicfront2 then this game is going to be great.

Agree. A bit disappointed they picked the U Wing over the iconic B Wing.
Elizabeth Lestrad a b wing couldn’t operate as a support ship, it’s a highly advanced bomber. It would make no sense for it to be in that role.
@@punctuationman334 The B-Wing is NOT a bomber (unless you're playing X-Wing or Armada). Its classified as a HEAVY ASSAULT starfighter. Meaning, technically, it could provide the best kind of support - fire support.
Besides, The U-Wing was a troop lander/ground support gunship. They would have been better with the E-Wing
Elizabeth Lestrad then make it a different class, it’s not that hard of a sollutution
Elizabeth Lestrad There definitely needs to be a heavy assault class added, at the very least for multiplayer
Never has a game more screamed "DLC!" to me lol. Obviously I want as many ships as they'll put in the game (B WINGS DAMMIT), but what I think would be really cool is a "Cinematic"/"Capture" mode. Lots of awesome community content could be generated from that.
There’s apparently more ships to be shown not just the 8
totally agree. no one ever mentioned that there are more than 8 ships from the start.

Nikolas DeRosa : Or have hero ships but make them super expensive so to keep them rare.
Of just keep them relegated to an optional choice in the story missions
Their controls were also Klunky though
They're unbalanced when a team doesn't understand the idea of swarming. Even Slave 1 can be taken out in only 2 waves with 3 ships hitting it at the same time, 1 wave if Slave 1 has no chance to use the sonic charge, or the attacking wave is out of range. The idea is to swarm. Have 1 interceptor lay chase to the hero, and 2 fighter class ships to cover the flanks. Add more ships for faster hero destruction.
Cant wait for the game to released, EA should have made some more games earlier instead of wasting the star wars licence 🦃
They are only doing these in order to try and save the license when renewal comes up.
@@DarkZenith ohhh yeeaaahhh.. maybe.
They're try to save the license also what will ea do to destroy a good game they done it before
I wonder if they will be adding more ships later, like the TIE Defender and B-Wing
It lambda shuttle. We've seen it, but it is unsure if we can pilot one.
Betcha there will be an expansion pack with TIE Defenders vrs B-Wings
Since we have "classes" the plan would seem to be EA selling ships that have all the same stats as the basic starfighters but looking very different. The name, "squadrons" also doesn't lock them into any specific era so you could have Clone Wars or even the Mandalorian War campaigns. That way, EA avoids the P2W accusations but knows that people would pay for an "Interceptor" that is a Clone Wars era Jedi Starfighter which functions the same as an A-wing.
Kryyss X exactly man. There’s no reason prequel era vulture droids and arc-170 could not come to the game.
@@KryyssTV I would be fine with that if it meant we got ships from other eras
TauridBorn hopefully it will be like agents in valorant. Where after a certain amount of xp will unlock another ship, like the B-wing, maybe the ghost or falcon, dooku’s Geonosian ship maybe(?), and any other ship. Maybe they each have some kind of different passive that isn’t too op so it isn’t a kind of pay to win.

Yep thats Sloane
Симеон Колев not to get into semantics but still technically a book, but yeah you’re right, she didn’t only appear in a novel
wow yeah nice catch!
Balancing would be interesting
If a team has 5 a wings with the intent of just hunting fighters they would go into round 2 with no human bombers making their attack ineffective. I'm wondering if there will be a death penalty for killing yourself to respawning. Or if you will have to fly back to land and deploy another fighter which wastes time. I think this could be really deep strategy wise if they play it smart.
what I didn't like about starfighter assault was there was no sense of speed, so I hope they add that in squadrons
ynot I mean, I can see that things look fast in the trailer so things look good.
That little shield thing you were wondering at is for aiming. In the trailer if you watch it, in one frame when the player is firing at the TIE, the icon for the TIE is dead center, as if it was in a crosshair. It is a targeting computer or whatever you would call it.
if it's anything like the old 90s X-wing and TIE fighter games then you will need to lead your shots and that will tell you if u r on target
I thought the shield icon might be to indicate where the ship you're tasked to defend is.
It probably works exactly like the one in Elite Dangerous
@@Zeto. Exactly. I was thinking the same thing. If your weapons are slower than light, you need a lead indicator like this.
That game series was out before the prequels. Would have been nice of LucasArts to have added the ARC-170 and the Naboo N-1.
This is what I was thinking, I loved TIE fighter so much when I was a kid
fingers crossed!
I wish you could fly an A-wing into the bridge of a Star Destroyer.
Only way the rebel scum could win

For the power bars you were talking about:
Blue = Engines
Red = Weapons - the two |'s on the side of the triangles appear to me to represent weapons, also the TIE hud only has red and blue power bars, which would imply engines and weapons)
Green = Shields - In the HUD's of the ships with shields, shields are green, , also the C icon on the power bar represents kinda a shield around a ship, and as mentioned above the TIE ships had no green bar power bad because they had no shields.

14:10 actually shows how we will control the shunting between the energy - it is arrow key (left, right, up, down). It is visible in all the other cockpits as well, but here it is completely obvious. That is why you cannot make head or tail out of the pictograms. Because they do not mean "shield, engine, weapons" but they show arrows. Lore-wise, it would make sense to have 4 buttons in the cockpit as well.
Left arrow = engine power (blue)
Up arrow = weapons (red)
Right arrow = shields (green/turqoise)
down arrow = reset to nominal
blue/red colours also match the SW Galaxies layout...
(TIE Reaper = two little arrows next to the shields)
This also in line with SW Galaxies and all the shout outs during space battles in movies.

Still no B-Wings :(
But other than that, dang I wanna play this. totally playing this on my VR headset.
Ikr, probably putting it in alongside the TIE Defender in a later update, soo excited
Yeah and meanwhile they will never add E and K wings..... sigh I'm never gonna get to fly those
@@delta2372 don't worry you just wait a week or two for the modders to do their magic
Yep.
I am preparing my PS VR and waiting for this fucking hypin' game.
It must be SO COOL IN VR.
I played No Man's Sky in VR and it was AWESOME!!!!!!!
This is the starfighter game I have been waiting for! Also...
"All wings report in..."
"Red Two reporting in!"
Red Five standing by!
“Gold Three reporting in”
(Just putting some variety to the squadrons we have here)
6:44, that’s the radar I believe. The cockpits seem to be just like the old X Wing series (TIE Fighter and XvT included)
EA play was depressing, i'm never getting that 50 minutes back
yeah aside from that one trailer, it was NOT worth it
This and skate 4 was all they had. Skate 4 is amazing but they showed nothing. This looks interesting but not enough to fill ea’a usual game release density
The gunship that you mention at 7:14 looks like iden versios carrier from the battlefront 2 campaign.
"Yub yub, commander."
If we don't get Ewok pilots, Ima riot.
yes
Well, that joked cracked me, even after years I'm still smiling on it.
Roan Novachez from Jedi Academy could tell you how that would work out... at least until you got your Ewok a Jawa co-pilot! Utiini!
@EckhartsLadder The shield icon on the HUD denotes a capital ship. The shield will most likely be in the fleet battle mode when you lose the fighter battle and must defend your friendly cruisers. The large red box icons are either enemy capital ships of the flagship.
this is the game I've always wanted
Now I can finally do all the crazy maneuvers that the Vipers do in BSG.
I’ve been begging him to crack open those games to play, now would be a good time to request it
6:33
I assume that it is a minimap and the individual icons resemble your team's capital ships, the enemy's capital ships, or main objectives.
Anytime the icon is in the center of the screen, the pilot is facing the ship or objective, and anytime the icon is on the edge of the screen it means the ship or objective is to the side or behind you.
Please dont call it a minimap 😂. Its a radar display, very common in space shooters.
I am so unbelievably hyped for this game now
Don’t be it’s ea
There are supposed to be. They are one of the cheapest Starfighters
Doing the drifts and crazy manoeuvres would be down to the inertia dampers. Trying to go that fast and pull those moves, would result it a red/black out without them.
There is no such thing as legends. It’s True Canon. F Disney
13:16 Do I see the A-wing's laser cannons with some vertical gimbal there? Nice.
I want shields on a Tie Fighter. Let’s make Thrawn’s vision a reality
Only in an atmosphere or a nebula.
Yeah that’s what I mean
I think it's probably there for gameplay purposes, giving you a visual sense of enemy vectors at distance for you to lead your shots since I presume they aren't going to give you a smart targeting reticule that gives you a shot-leading estimate.
The sim elements they describe in this make it sound like a lot of things are going to be more manual, so the game is going to have to communicate information to the players differently.
They're contrails from the main thrusters. Not the same as the condensation from the wings of aircraft.
In response to your question about if looking around your cockpit without VR would work: In Elite Dangerous they get around this by having you click in the left joystick (I play on PlayStation) to toggle head gimbaling or standard flight controls. It works pretty well from my experience although VR players would certainly have an advantage
