I am new to bass guitar and I got ddadario tapewounds They are awesome for me as a beginner. I love the softer sound like an upright bass too since I like blues and jazz mostly
I switched on flats because they were more gentle on my fingers as a beginner, then I really liked the sound on my P bass. (Ernie Ball 50-105 with Emg pick up).
Being a brand new bass - for a brand new bassist - my Ibanez Mikro still has the original strings. Come string changing time I'll most likely go for LaBella flatwounds for that vintage smooth sound.
@@ebassguitar I will. I think they will complement the already boomy short scale very well. I really love that vintage low-end thump. But it would be a shame to throw away a set of brand spanking new roundwounds, so for now I'll just dial down the amp's treble a little bit. 😎
@@jowesh732 haven't got those flatwounds yet, would be a waste to throw away those new roundwounds. And I haven't learned slap bass yet. So your guess is as good as mine.
La Bella, Deep Talkin, flat wounds. This was an awesome lesson for me. I'm going to try these on some of my worship songs which have gotten pretty stale with roots and the occasional 5th.
@@ebassguitar You're not going to believe this. I've got the LaBella Deep Talkin White tapewounds on my short scale, and D'Addario black tapewounds on the long. I'll probably go with LaBella when I change them. I love the lack of any finger noise.
Hi James. I like NIckle wound round strings. Sunbeams from DR are favorites. I also like Rotosound 66 nickel roundwounds but they don't last too long. Currently I'm using DR Blues Nickel rounds on my Jazz Bass and Rotosound on my active Ibanez. Back in the day I use to use Ken Smith strings steel rounds. Of course this makes no difference in sound but they have purple wraps at the top. I was playing a Koa wood Peavey Bass and thought it looked cool. Hmm, I may try them again - they are a good string.
I use DR Flat Beams on my Ibanez 4 string, La Bella White Nylon Tapewounds on my acoustic fretless 5 string, and La Bella Low Tension Flats on my hollow body PJ 5 string.

I was thinking with the Maj7th of the C chord being a b note and that is the root of the next chord we are allowed an opportunity to explore inverting the triad for the B chord. Also, is your last example making use of a cadence? Thank you for the great lesson. Another top notch offering from your channel.
Round wound, just like Bruno Benoit my Ibanez SR300EB is still running the original strings but I would not mind trying some flat wounds for the experience.
Flats on the acoustic, rounds on the electric. Maybe I'm imagining it, but the flats have a percussive effect on the acoustic and the rounds sound fatter on the electric.
James Jamerson wanted nothing to do with roundwounds or the bass sound entering guitar territory. He liked his Labellas old, well played in and full of funk and only ever changed them if he had to (because he broke one)
@@danplaysbass6294 It just works so well for everything he did. If you listen to any of his soloed bass recordings, the sound is nothing to write home about, (kinda muffled and a bit distorted) but for all those classic records, in the mix it just works! Can't argue with that 😊
@@danplaysbass6294 In fact, over the years I've grown to appreciate the difference between a fantastic bass tone (on its own or for solo stuff) and what a mix may require to make the bass frequencies fit best to complement everything else going on and fit the song or composition. Flats are really nice to play but I don't like the really stiff heavy ones
I LOVE the way you teach, James.
Labella “Deep Talkin” Flatwound Bass Strings are my favorites.

Ernie Ball Cobalt Flat Wounds for my basses. Great lessons, I’ve learned a lot of bass from your videos 🎶😎
