Marvel's Spider-Man (2017) is a show that's remembered as one that didn't look very good. "Desaturated, dull and mediocre"... a bummer because a ton of talented people worked on this show and animated the heck out of it! So why does it not look good? It all comes down to timing, depth through shadows and compositing. Let's reanimate Marvel's Spider-Man, and fix up the show to make it look the best it can be!

True, the only time you'll ever see that shine in this show is the prologue short where Peter Chases down Uncle Ben's killer. The lighting was really nice
Its one thing to have boring character designs, but when there's also a lack depth to every frame,it really numbs the experience of watching this show, so it was so cool to see Ben 10 Parker in a new light *pun intended*
He does sound like Yuri Lowenthal!

This is the shading that the show needed. im absolutley blown away b how much of a difference there is. looking at your version makes me wish the animation would have looked like that, for the whole series

This show was such a mixed bag, on the one hand it's got some great ideas like the slow build-ups to Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, and Venom, but on the other hand characters just, don't change or ever learn, and having Miles get his powers only 6 months after Peter just completely derails their relationship dynamic. If anything it makes Miles MORE of a sidekick to Peter, which he should never be. But back on the first hand this series' Harry was great, but on the bad hand Gwen and Anya were so tacked on to this show that they barely ever did anything. But finally on the good hand the J.M. DeMatteis written "Bring on the Bad Guys Part One" was incredible and really put focus on Uncle Ben and Peter's relationship beyond "Great Power yada yada."
Also anytime the Avengers get involved it's just eye-rolling cringe. They treat Peter like he's this long established hero who doesn't need training despite the fact he's no older than their trainees (Ms. Marvel, Brawn, and Iron Heart.) I think this a majority of problems with show absolutely would have been fixed or avoided by making Peter a teacher at Horizon instead of a student. Once again fear of making Peter "too old" got in the way of a potentially great Spider-Man story.
The fact that one guy could add shadows proves this wasn't a budget issue.
HOLY cow, Mauricio, GOOD work! I especially love the backlit shots of Prowler, but the whole thing now has a legitimately "Young Justice" level quality to it. It's amazing how these types of tricks really just cement the animation inside the world so much better. Now I wanna do this to another show myself...
I will never understand all the sheer whining about the animation in seasons 3 and ESPECIALLY 4 of Young Justice. It’s still pretty good compared to a lot of action animation, especially Marvel’s Spider-Man.

@@GamerSlyRatchet1personally, the colours are too muted and the designs completely change for no reason, the longer time gap between seasons 1&2 have almost the same designs for the characters. (Also Have to bring up the messed up stuff with Halo - Haven't seen Season 4 but heard she becomes Muslim but stays Bi? Wtf in management decides that?)

As someone who loves this show you did a great job adding supplemental animation. I'll often just take screenshots and edit them for fun. I wish they would add the proper lighting and shading like you have.
Your version is SO MUCH better!! It's nuts how a few shading changes can fix a show!
Also, another thing that bugged me with this show: the promo/concept art made for this show (done by Patrick Brown), the promo art made us think the character designs would look PHENOMENAL! But of course, it turned out to be clickbait

A lot of that merch actually isn’t from the show. It was just generic merch that people thought was the show’s due to the generic title.

So does that mean they just used the designs for Classic Spidey and Homemade suit Spidey from those merch and slightly modified them? Is that also why there is Spider-Man 2099 in the merch but not in the show?

Thank you for mentioning the Grace Liu thing, Mauricio! I remember being so excited when I saw she was on board this show because her character designs and animatics (especially for Spidey) are SO fluid and expressive. Almost none of that translates to the show though, sadly.

The channel should make a Spider-Man animated series, that can be the newest revolutionary best series with unique epic storytelling and better best animation.
Not to toot my own horn but if Marvel gave Browntable 10 million bucks (half what is usually needed), 13 eps would be done in two years easily and would be Spectacular Spider-Man level

This was one of my all time favorite spiderman shows back in 2017, but I always felt like it was missing a certain charm to it.

This was what it was missing. The shading, the lighting, everything looks so much better and more complete.
I wish this show had a better budget, because it would've had a much bigger fanbase, and we'd actually be able to appreciate every aspect of it, instead of what wasn't there.

I'm glad to at least see some sort of discussion on this series, I grew up with tnas and then with spectacular, love them both but I can say sincerely that 2017 is easily my favorite spiderman series, something about it just checked every box I wanted, aside from visually of course, kinda hard to top ultimate on that front.

The fact that Disney made two Spider-Man shows with multiple seasons just to try and live up to the hype of Spectacular Spider-Man which only had one season really speaks volume.
This video speaks a lot about the things that do happen inside big professional studios. Is not that the animators and devs are not talented, is fucking companies like Disney that crunch people to deliver the products we see today. It is a shame. Thank you for this great video.

The weird thing is that up until about 2016/2017 these Marvel Animation series were actually decently shaded, then once they got to the fourth season of Avengers and the first season of this series, they just... stopped shading.
Budget cuts and Staff lay-offs maybe? Who knows what happens behind the scenes that leads to such things.
I've always wanted to make my own version of a spiderman show. He seems like a really fun character to work on. Beit animating, writing, voice acting, etc.

You should re-animate under the red hood and make it “RATED R” cause with all the hit they take their face is still clean and some of the lighting could be better I’ve always loved this movie but those are the only problems I’ve found

While it is looking better. I still feel like there are a bit too many awkward pauses in the source animation. It is a gripe I have with most western shows. It's like the episodes were consistently a couple of minutes short so they try to sneak in extra frames of non-movement everywhere to make up the runtime. It kind of adds to the feeling of most western shows being radiodramas where the animation is an afterthought to fill the visual space.

Something I would add is that is doesnt make sense for prowler to say "I got you now" cuz he really doesnt, no trap setting or anything, he is just there pointing his weapon at spidey like seconds ago. So I think you should have made him say something else. Great work man, the shadow, lighting and the vibrant red on spidey adds a lot really
