What operating systems do mainframes run? What's the difference between the software developed on those computers and regular computers, is it Unix? Is Mainframes pretty much databases, we have a mainframe at my job and I had to add some digital certificates to the mainframe; however, I did this remotely and had no idea it was a mainframe I was adding it to until I received an error message. I had a basic knowledge on mainframe from tech courses in high school (military school for advanced ITs). I never worked on one, and I do not feel like taking the time to read a whole wikipedia article about it for a single question. Can someone give me knowledge on this, excuse me ignorance.
IBM Mainframes can run a few different operating systems, but z/OS and Linux are probably the most common. z/OS is fully compliant with UNIX standards, so if you SSH into it from putty, the terminal command line you encounter is virtually indistinguishable from any other UNIX system. When you use a 3270 terminal emulator to log into TSO/ISPF, then the game changes a bit...
Part 3
