The AN-218: Ukraine’s Boeing 777 Competitor That Never Was

  • Boeing’s twinjet widebody 777 airliners have been gracing the world’s skies since the mid-1990s. Its main competitors have always been the A330 and A340 models produced by European manufacturer Airbus. However, it nearly ended up also seeing competition from a Ukrainian design, namely the proposed Antonov An-218. But what exactly is the story of the 777 competitor that never was?

Forget it. Soviet/Russian built will never get EASA & FAA certified.
So, even if it get built, it can only operate within the former Soviet blocks and the remaining few communist holdouts with an occasional trips to the Free Zone.

Actually some might say this would be a competitor to the 767/A330. But in reality, the 777-200/ER had the same capacity as the 333, which was the bridge between the then 767,747 or 332/343.
The 77W came later by a decade and some airlines configure it in a premium configuration that it's closer to the 787s and 339s.
Thus the 777 was initially designed as a medium capacity medium range which then was developed into a high capacity long range and ultra long range with it's 777-200LR

Vulcan XH-558 is based there and that used to make a fantastic noise taking off. I grew up on the Flightpath of what was RAF Finningley when it was an active Vulcan base. Great sights and sounds.

@@osasunaitor Praising a plane that everybody praises doesn't mean they aren't biased towards Boeing, it just mean the 220 and 321XLR are great. For the same reason, the tons of B747 videos they make might just be because a lot of people love that model.
You actually need to look at the other videos, like this one. Why did it have to be the B777? And just look at the last video, that they posted one hour ago: why are they asking if the B777 will be the last jumbo? Does the 350 don't exist to them?
This channel is so biased towards Boeing, I'm really starting to believe they are sponsored.

@@PTB_BE - It never would have went anywhere. Other (at the time new) aviation programs from the former USSR like the Il-96 and Il-114 were many years farther along and yet practically stillborn. There wasn't any additional resource base to devote to a new Antonov project. I'm pretty sure they came to recognize that fact and that is why it was abandoned.

I can’t consider it a failure as it never got beyond a wooden mock up, yes it had technological problems but it I’m sure they could have been resolved. I just don’t think the money was there to progress with the project as Ukraine was still dealing with it’s independence from Russia.
