An emotional end to their story but i really wish someone would make the other half of the story/book as there's a lot more to it...the fight compared to most of the others is poor though,all the fights between Choi Min-Soo(the first Sky Lord) and The Sword Saint put it to shame..
I remember 14 year old me sitting in the couch and crying for like 15 minutes non stop after watching the ending of the series (this scene). Still I believe his death was unnecessary, he should have left somewhere far away at least, if the writers wanted to get rid of him so badly. I was really heartbroken and mad at this scene.
When I read the plot of this stories/kdrama, I am really amazed that why I decided to watch the last part if it is a happy ending but sadly, it made cried 😭 I think I can't handle to watch a beautiful story with a very sad ending 😥 But all I can say is I know it is a great drama with an amazing story! Ending was really nonsense. First, there was very weak love triangle between dong soo je sun and yeo woon , every kdramas have strong triangle of love but they hadn't. Second,they had very strong friendship even they were separated and it seemed that they cared about each other(or love each other in awkward way but they didn't tell each other about that because both of them thought it wasn't right)so yeo woon's death was unfair.he was hero beside him with assassin's mask and I wonder why dong soo belived that woon hurt cho rip after what he had done. Kdrama is kdrama when someone dies .so they just could to kill cho rip and not woon.woon would be happy if he came back to his old family especially with dong soo.It was his true wish but unfortunately it didn't come true in the end.

Yes your right, it does look like a pointless fight that put an end to a lovable friendship. However this drama is one of those dramas where you have to watch it in order to understand the full significance of this scene. In the beginning of this scene Dong So said it’s all finished and asks Un to come back. If it is truly finished why didn’t he go back? Why had Un decided to end his life after gaining the title of best swordsman? What are the parallels between Dong su and Un in comparison to their teachers? Were they truly fated to end in such a way or was the prophecy just a few sentences a heartbroken father said that had no relation to Un? What is the legacy of these two men and their works? These are all questions that culminates in this tragic scene. I watched this drama after watching this scene and it made the drama even better. It was easier to answer the questions above and understand why the drama had to go in such a path. It’s message( you should find it for yourself) is under a lot of episodes and drama, but I believe it is worth while; especially if you want to understand the culture of Han. Yes you can have your own opinion, but do understand that without watching and understanding a film, criticism is a baseless opinion.

I think you may have missed subtle key elements in this scene so I just wanted to correct you if someone haven’t already done so. In the fighting sequence baek dong soo didn’t stab Yeo Un. When they ran towards each other with their swords, dong soo lifted his sword but didn’t strike Yeo Un. Instead he had his eyes closed as if he was preparing for his own death. Neither men have the heart to kill the other. Knowing this Yeo Un release his swords and sacrifice his own life and intentionally ran into dong su sword. Yeo Un could have survived that stab, hence why dong su said that he can still live, but Yeo Un then slightly moved his body so that the sword can strike his major organ to guarantee his own death. It was truly a heartbreaking scene because of the strength and beauty of their friendship. The person that actually betrayed their friendship in my opinion is their friend Cho Rip. He didn’t believe in Yeo Un enough to do the right thing. This tragedy could have been prevented had Cho Rip believe in Yeo Un as much as Dong Soo did. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify this scene and hope that helps!

Technically, it would be "Woon" -- "Woon-ah" is a sort of pet name from what I've gathered, similar to "Dong-soo-yah".
The Korean spelling is 운. ㅜ makes the "oo" sound. Can also be spelled "u". So, Un is correct, actually.
