  • My Oldsmobile 403 engine on test stand being run last May for the first time after engine rebuild. Block was bored .039 over, now a 409ci. Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons, Crane RV cam and other added improvements. Heads were ported and polished. Engine now going back into the '79 Pontiac 10th Anniversary Trans Am. Will run it on Dyno and get the rebuilt carb rejetted in November. btw - I also had the original Exhaust Manifolds blasted and then Ceramic Coated silver. This helps keeps the heat where it should be and then blows it out the back. They also look better!

I owned a 1979 Trans Am with a 403 Olds engine. I put 3.42 gears in it headers and real dual exhaust, jetted the Quadrajet and put a Moroso distributor kit in it. Through the mufflers in full street trim it ran 14.40 at Laplace.

Absolutely, find a set of smaller CC chambered heads to bump the compression ratio to about 9 and 1/2 to 1, you'll be looking at well over 400 horsepower..

this guy isn't old enough to know how to modify a Q-Jet to give that 403 the fuel it needs at an idle, he's just talking, unfortunately. He's probably a good mechanic otherwise. If you take the top of the carb off, you can drill the restrictors that feed the idle circuit and you'll have so much fuel you'll have to back down the mixture screws to lean it out- exact opposite of the problem he has here. At least he admits he knows very little about Q-Jets. (to his credit). such a shame as that 403 is just starving for fuel :-( and he has one of the best carburetors ever made- by any manufacturer !

He clearly says he’s not a Q jet guy..

The idle seems high, like its running thru the primary circuit not the idle circuit.

It looks good but why even waste money on it,it's a weak block an oversized bore for been 403 and main walls are really weak I guess it's ok for a stock block

Kerry Byers -- This is at C&D Engine Performance in Kirkland, WA. They're a family business that's been going strong since 1976. Full machine shop and racing blood in their veins. They saved my engine from a disaster rebuild (and failure) only a year earlier. I should have went with these guys from the start. Will pay more here, but if I came here first, it would have saved me $4,000 in the long run.
