This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Aristotle's work, the Politics, and examines his discussion in book 1 about whether the art of acquiring wealth or possessions (kremastike) is the same as, or involved with the art of household management (oikonomike).

Fantastic lecture! TH-cam suggested this video, looking forward to going through your past work. Almost two years ago I completed a course called Philosophy of Family and Household where we spent a substantial amount of time discussing Aristotle as well as Xonophon's Socratic dialogue regarding this topic. The technological advances have fundamentally changed the home. While there are tremendous benefits to these changes, there is also loss ( one of which is the lack of or misunderstanding of what constitutes a household). This was one of the key themes in my class. In addition we read lengthy excerpts from Christopher Lasch's Haven in a Heartless World and Wendell Berry's The Unsettling of America both had very startling views of man divorced from a real connection with the world around him in order to live. Thank you bringing up such a fundamental topic for discussion.

This topic is very interesting. I have two questions. Why was Aristotle concerned about this in his schema it seems like it is very important to him and yet in modern society we don't pay much attention to home economics except on some esoteric TH-cam channels I enjoy. (and I don't mean Martha Stewart's home economics!). My second question is did Aristotle think of marriage where the woman was charged with home economics and the man as the money generator like the typical 1950 and 1960's in the United States? Thanks Dr Sadler!!! You are the best!
