    Small steps, she's doing fine. A honker is a big bird and it takes experience. The more time you two spend working and hunting together, the more it will come together. A few years from now, you'll be able to look back at this video and smile.

    Man, Josh, I hate to be kind of negative here when I have gotten so much enjoyment out of your other hunts. That whining is too much. If it doesnt bother you, thats great, but every retrieve she gets after whining is reinforcing that behaviour in the strongest way possible. She is doing wonderful otherwise but nobody likes a hunting companion that whines, whether they have 2 legs or 4.

      Fair. How do you break her of that?

    • @wesleywalker1682
      @wesleywalker1682 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@208sj She doesn't get sent for a bird until she is totally calm and quiet. However long that might take is fine. She will figure out pretty quick that the sooner she is quiet the sooner she gets to retrieve.

    Bro our stories are super similar. Trained my dog myself and went through the same growing pains I’m seeing here. This is so relatable and gives me flashbacks. Young dogs are like young kids man, expecting them to be perfect is crazy. The greatest thing for the dog is experience. Years 1-2 hunting with my dog was vastly different than 3-8. I was at the same point you were when you were frustrated when someone told me “if your kid was a teenager, would you expect them to know all this first time.” Not all days with a dog are perfect, just like people aren’t. Keep your head up, she will be just fine. Spoil her and love her.

    She is doing great!Completely normal and she will grow every hunt!Keep doing what your doing!One of my best dogs (a master hunter) would not pick up a goose at all first year!She is fine!

    Great video!
    Very good improvement. I will say, she started out strong on the blind retrieve and you said “good”. When my dog was young he would instantly turn and think I was giving him a signal because he heard my voice. The reason they do this is because they are inexperienced and not confident. Best thing to do is let her go until she turns around herself! 👍🏻 learning process for both of you! Enjoy the early hunts….

    Good stuff Josh! Don't worry about Kora this early in her hunting experience. My boy's first goose was very similar...he didn't know how to pick that big thing up. After a few goose hunts he was dialed in. She's doing very good for her age and experience. Can't wait to see what's next.

    I feel you man. My pup has two days on the water this season. Something I learned from my last pup is to carry a couple rocks to throw next to the bird. You said it perfectly- she's visual. she lost it so you need to get her to see the picture again.

    I have to agree with your statement about having a good dog out duck hunting expressing when you trained yourself but even better when you have children and they get involved in the sport you love and you see them fall in love with duck hunting that's even better than having a dog top it all off you can have your children with you learning and enjoying the sport and a good dog

    By puppy standards Kora is doing great. Some small dogs take a couple years to fetch geese because they are so much bigger. Don't get angry just keep training and with experience she is going to be really good.

  • @brucevansickle2645
    @brucevansickle2645 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent work with your dog. Couple simple tips: If it's becoming difficult, you did the right thing by stopping. You need to bring a stake and short led for steadiness in the blind. The term "Place" my be the command to stay in her kennel. Sending her for short retrieves is good. Keep it up. The diving duck probably grabbed a reed to hold.

    I have a 3 year old male lab. I hunted geese over him one time at 8 months old. Then only ducks until this year where he has gotten some more geese experience. He is much more mature and stronger to carry them better.

  • @bobolinkdk
    @bobolinkdk ปีที่แล้ว

    You’re hindsight is right on. Dogs do best what they do most. Long blinds into cover is very advanced, and if you have not trained it, she has not learned it.
    I agree that you may want to force fetch her. Also consider running her in HRC to keep her sharp in the off season. I saw Elliot and Georgia at an HRC test this summer. Training for tests keeps you adding new skills to Cora’s toolbox and training goals for both of you. A finished dog should do those water blinds into cover, and allow you to introduce those concepts in a low-stress logical manner.

    Keep you hand still when sending them on a point, great job by the dog. I made that mistake training my first go, i alos kept rocks in my decoy bag to throw out in front of them to keep them on point when retrieving a long retrieve. Great JOB though!

  • @peterlloyd3279
    @peterlloyd3279 ปีที่แล้ว

    Second retrieve was very good and a good performance all round. It would be unusual for a young dog to retrieve a goose at first attempt. I train mine with a 6 1/2lb hare dummy to start and then put that along with some other soft weights to get it to about 10lbs in a pillow case. I attach a few goose wings and practise with that. My old dog was 3 before he took to retrieving geese but now he’s goose mad (so am I😂) If Kora was my dog I would be happy with her - have faith

  • @ItsFinney
    @ItsFinney ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly it can take a few hunting seasons to get your dog acclimated, I have seen senior and master titled dogs take a year to really understand what’s going on and what you are asking. Just stay patient and keep practicing in the off season, hunting and training can be two completely different worlds. She is doing great!

    She just young bro. All those things will work out. My dog didn’t want to pick up the first goose either. And the whining is a tough thing to conquer. With my dog he never really stopped. It definitely got better as he got older but he would still do it when he got excited.

    Can't let a fresh pup bring you down. She's doing fine and time in the stand will do wonders. I would get super frustrated watching other CGA dogs on the page tearing it up flawlessly. In hindsight I should've just expected where we were and been fine with it.

  • @midwesthunterangler7592
    @midwesthunterangler7592 ปีที่แล้ว

    She’s come a lot further than you think it’s a time thing. My own dog is 6 and is still making mistakes from time to time. You and her just got to keep cracking at it. NFL athletes still practicing even after they make it to the pros because it helps condition and hone their skills youll make a good duck dog out of her just give it time. Also awesome scramble to the gun on the goose you dusted that thing lol

    There, I took care of that for you so you can tell any complainers that it has been covered. 🤣
    Love the videos, and OnX is a great app to have! Be patient with Cora, I think you are both doing good for your first season. Training a dog isn't just about the dog learning, it is also about the trainer learning the dog. It will all come together in time.

    Get some pigeons put them down shoot as many flyers for as you can. Send a guy out have him shoot the flyer send the dog extend the range. The more birds you shoot the more the dog will want it. Get the dog bird crazy then put the screws to em. That is what my friend swears by its working so far for my dog.

    I would back off letting her get retrieves and focus on that noise she makes. If you don’t, your going to have created a habit that you can’t break. Take her hunting but just make her sit there the whole hunt and don’t let her get a retrieve. Also, you made a video about getting an E-collar, use it! Sit nick sit every time she makes noise.

  • @danielsullivan9865
    @danielsullivan9865 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dog should never be taken to the field until they’re fully trained that means force broke to retrieve. Otherwise all you do is reinforce bad habits and ruin your hunt. Without training there’s no way to make the correction.
