In case there were curiosities...this was a REHEARSAL. Singers mark and do not always sing out the way they would in a performance.

Fabulous! Isabel Leonard is my favorite coloratura soprano, and Juan Diego Flórez, my absolute favorite also. Love them.

Isabel Leonard is a mezzosoprano. Juan Diego Flórez is a tenor.

DiDonato as Rosina that was the dream! Nobody has ever sang this role better. Joyce you are great!

Rosina is extremely charming! She should sing together with Juan Diego Florez as Alma Viva! They would be the most beautiful and heart-breaking couple! I like her.

Songelosodelzefiro Yes! I like your casting idea. Both voices are bright and romantic. And both of them can commit to a character and be convincing.

Caitlin Maher Thanks to your post I have noticed what a ridiculous and strange mistake I had made - of course not Alma Viva but Almaviva! Well, maybe some days both artists will sing together. But Juan Diego Florez hasn't sung this part for a rather long time now and I'm not sure whether it wouldn't be too risky for him to undertake the task of singing "Cessa di piu resistere" - his signature piece - after a couple of years after his absolutely historical, greatest, masterly performances at Met in 2007 and Covent Garden in 2009. It wouldn't be easy to repeat such unbelievable renditions and such success.

Songelosodelzefir: I did note the mis-typing of the name but I knew what you meant so no harm no foul... nobody died :) JDF needn't repeat anything.... just bring his current artistry to a role. Performers at his level do not strive to repeat performances but to invent each time. :) So maybe you'll get your wish someday.

Caitlin Maher I agree with you when it comes to the artistry and invention great artists may bring to new renditions of roles they once performed. Writing about repeating success I meant vocal disposal, skill, efficiency (I do hope I'm puttin it right in English which is a foreign language to me). It seems to me that JDF's singing has been a bit strained for some time now.

    • @katydid41

Your English is excellent... no worries... ahhh yes, vocal prowess can change of course. I'm not a JDF connoisseur, so I default to your insight. And this business of tenors blowing out their voices makes me sick to my tummy to think about. Villazon with Netrebko was such a blessing in this world but since surgery he's had to change his repertoire and his way of singing; and of course Netrebko has moved to another repertoire too since her child's birth and the advent of her dramatic soprano voice. I wept though when I learned of Rolando's medical issues. Oh well... I'm not in charge of the universe, so....

@@RustyRogers What does that have to do with what singers look like? Standards of singing have taken a major dip with opera turning into Hollywood.

@@leif1075 Okay, maybe I was a little pissed and should have responded in a different way. I'm just a little tired of certain people (especially since a certain PG took over at the Met) pushing the agenda that 'park & bark' days are finished and we're entering a wonderful new era of fine acting in opera, which is sometimes equated with what singers look like (please). The fact is there have always been truly great singing actors throughout the history of opera. I collect recordings from the beginning of the last century and even a few from the 1890's, and even though you can't see them, we can be overwhelmed by the acting abilities of Claudia Muzio, Scotti, Tibbett, etc., this is not a new thing. That doesn't really answer your question, does it? Well, though singers being rushed into heavy roles prematurely has always been a problem, I feel it's much more prevalent in today's environment with physically perfect singers being the premium priority. How many Nemorino's have we heard as Radames in the past 15 years, fine voices are being damaged. In the meantime, singers who don't look so perfect (like myself) are denied opportunities. Childish, I know. Sorry to ramble on like this.

I doubt that Joyce DiDonato is such a spiteful person, who needs to sneer at others to feel better about herself and push her own ego with such immature behavior. She seems rather likeable, professional and positive.
Isabel Leonard's coloraturas weren't too good, though. I agree. xD
