  • Narrated by Chuck Shockley, this documentary about the history of Des Moines, Iowa had been done as a college class project. An interview with former mayor of the city, George Whitmer is part of this production.
An attempt was made to mute some copyrighted music, so if there is a silent spot, this is why.

The person who chose to insert piano in this video must have been chosen by the des moines city council.

Records brought in by ox drawn sleigh.
Which is why everything takes so long as far as building permits and such....keeping in the style of an ox drawn sleigh.
Although the video states it was an ox drawn bobsled. That would mean the oxen were extremely fast, fast enough to run down a bobsled track. Although it makes one think of where the hill for the track was and why were the records kept at the top of the track and for how long. Which I think would have been pertinent information for this video. 🤷

Water covered bottomless pits. And where might these bottomless pits be.
I think that would be an interesting tourist attraction!

De Moine spelled without an "S"
Must have added the s when rattlesnakes were found around Winterset. Which would have been one of the last towns founded or they just forgot and added it to remind people that yes, there are rattlesnakes in Des Moines. Therefore any city with an s in the name depending on where it is in the name. Is the time frame that they found rattlesnakes in that city.
Or maybe one s in the name means snakes were found and two s's means rattlesnakes...😬
Or to escape all the rattlesnakes one could've hopped the steamboat and found no snakes on board.

Interesting how such an ancient project is now getting such detailed criticism. It was a miracle under the circumstances at the time that the thing even got made.

If I can get into a time machine and go back and adjust the mix I will but there's no such thing as a time machine so you'll just have to live with it.

I don't know who was in charge of sound and video on this in 1982.
    But it's horrible.
It's more like a silent movie as sound is breaking into the last century in the 20's.
1982 in des moines compares to the 1920's 🤦
I swear this looks way older

It was a college class project done with equipment far less capable than what's available today. Complain all you want but it it what it is.

IF you think you could do better with this, you are welcome to try. You do the research. You get the images and sound and you edit it all together. But before you get too comfortable, you have to do it with non-broadcast 1980's era analog equipment with VTRs where it's a spin of the roulette wheel if you are going to get a clean cut. It's very easy to sit back and complain years after the fact. You try making such a thing with what was available at the time to a cash starved college student.
