Seriously wish I could send this man the money I paid towards my statistics class this semester. I learn more from watching him than I ever have at my university. Not only did his lectures help me test into statistics in the first place (skipping so many math courses, saving me so much time and money) but now they are helping me ace the class. I got a 98 on my last test and the average was a 66!! Thank you Professor Leonard, you have no idea how much you have helped me.
I'm a Psychology Major and I am useless when it comes to math. I took this course once before, 5 years ago, on line and the teacher was horrible, if I asked a question they would say... " read page..." I begged and pleaded for help to no avail and failed the course. This defeat devastated me, and I gave up on school. I just decided to go back and finish my BA, only to be faced with the same situation, only this time the teacher says... "Watch this clip". Out of frustration I utilized my detective skills and found you! Thank you! I don't believe this is a course you can learn just from reading. One actually needs class instruction. You are wonderful and you saved my bacon. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Signed 48 year old Gramma that is trying again.
I am a psych major as well, first time i took stats I got a D....graduated, now want honours and look forward...so now 35 years old 15 years later, trying to take that D to an A... so far i'm on par.... but geeeez a lot of hard work
Don't you still need statistics in order to do research? I just finished a biochemistry lab report using Chi-squared testing. Like its biology, but I still used math
I have a huge test tomorrow and literally watched all videos from chap 7 to here, and holy shit i'm amazed at how much I understand now. My professor is horrible, just shows a slide show and never actually does any problems. Then when we ask questions he treats us like we are stupid and say well what's not to get, then he just repeats the slide quicker then the first time. Thank you so incredibly much for these videos! You are an amazing professor!
Showering awards would be too less for such a passionate teacher ! Perhaps , we could acknowledge his teaching by doing our best in our exams :/ just an opinion :/
I'm sure they've likely heard the horror stories about other professors. My professor isn't as good as professor Leonard, but he's a lot better than some of the professors that I've heard stories about... Like my bestie's math professor... She's always talking about how he's taught 2 chapters worth of math in 3 months and rambles on throughout every lecture about how they're "so far behind" where they should be that he doesn't have much time left in class to catch up. Then, he bounces around the book, from 3.1 to 8.5 to 4.6... And I know she isn't lying, because I've heard several other people in her class say these same things..
Thank you so much for doing these videos. You did this five years ago and dropped it here, and five years later, its saving me in my engineering statistics class with a professor who just teaches straight from the textbook and nothing makes sense! Thank you!!!
I cannot express enough how much you have helped me. My professor just reads his slides but doesn't teach. You have helped me understand this subject better than I thought I would ever comprehend. You are an amazing professor.
I plan on watching this lecture more than once because it is so valuable. Thank you for breaking it down into easily digestible parts AND for helping me conceptualize everything so that is all comes together and I actually understand WHY I’m doing something. This is going to help me keep my high GPA and scholarship. :D
I just want to take the time to simply thank you. When I started this class I almost had a mental break down. I couldn't recall what I learned in Stats 3 years ago. You made it so easy to understand. I feel confident with the lecture and I understand the material. I really appreciate people that take their time to help others like you. Thank you.
I have been struggling with these sort of problems for three hours now and you just made it crystal clear. Thank you so much for saving a guy whose been spending the first few hours of his 21st doing stats homework
One topic he doesn't cover in his videos on hypothesis testing is the concept of a Type 1 and a Type 2 error. A *Type 1 Error* is when you accidentally reject the null hypothesis when it is actually true. A *Type 2 Error* is when you accidentally accept (fail to reject) the null hypothesis when it is actually false. The probability of committing a TYPE 1 ERROR is *alpha* -- the level of significance used in the test. The probability of committing a TYPE 2 ERROR is *beta* -- which cannot be directly calculated.
Though it was a really long watch, you have taken me from zero understanding on hypothesis to a fair amount of understanding in it. Thankyou so very much, Mr. Leonard. :)
your students are reallyyyy lucky !! they can get an A easily because you explain every thing:')!! thank you for uploading this video you saved my life !!
Thanks Prof. Leonard, I struggled more in stats than I had in most of my calculus classes... You made it so much easier because you're willing to explain why you're doing each little steps and what the concept behind those steps are. Helping me through calc 2 and now stats haha!
Your lecture videos are out of this world. No one demolishes statistics the way you do. I regret buying the recommended text book because you explain statistics VERY WELL. I watched all your videos. For me, you rendered that textbook useless. My final grade in the course was 95.5 %. I cannot thank you enough.
Just let you know that I got 93% on the hypothesis test. Thank you so so so much, Professor Leonard!!! My professor is a shit .... you are the hero !!! God bless youuuuuu:)
Omgoodness!!!! You are amazing! I even raised my hand when you’d ask if we understood. I am mind blown! I did the first half of my homework and was done in 5 minutes with a 100. That’s never happened!!!!!! Thank you so much!
I am taking statistics online. Boy was that a mistake! You are the best math teacher I have ever seen! You saved me! I wish I could have had a teacher like you for high school and college algebra. You are truly a talented teacher!!! I just can not thank you enough! Thank you! Thank you!!
memorized a whole bunch of messy note from my prof and this video makes everything so clear and easy to understand. I am literally crying cuz I finally get the learning..... Thank you sooooo much!
Wow man... I thought STATS was so difficult BUT YOU MAKE IT SO SIMPLE. Right now it's 1am in the morning and you have stimulated my interest. Big ups Prof
You saved me! Statistics is hard enough, taking it at home during covid with no lectures, using only class notes uploaded to learn on our own is difficult! So thank you for preventing me from failing my first time taking Statistics.
Thank you, professor Leonard. You are such a great teacher. Really in detail and really clear. I can't completely understand at my Statistics class. Thanks God, I found this video. It's long, but really helpful. Thanks again!
This teacher is a holy grail in my class. I have no idea what I'm doing in my math until I bumped into his channel and walllahhh!! now I'm a math wiz. Thank you Prof. :)
This has been so incredibly helpful, thank you so much. I look forward to viewing more Statistics videos as they have saved me!! The language is easy to follow, the examples are realistic, and the videos are interesting instead of boring.
Super Awesome, I am a first year student doing my masters in Business Analytics and because I never studied statistics before, I was facing hell of problems in completing even my first assignment(covering chap 1 to 8 in one go). Professor Leonard explained everything in so detailed that now i know everything and now i'm confident enough for next assignments.
Professor Leonard, Thank you very much for all the videos, you are helping Big Time. It is sad to admit, but we have too many professors, but very little who are really /truly able to teach. THANK YOU AGAIN.
I had a wonderful professor for my stats for social sciences course and got a great mark, but had to take pretty much the same stats course with a different number from another professor that literally caused me to forget everything I knew about stats cause she was the most boring, least intuitive professor of all time... Professor Leonard is giving me a great refresher on all the things my new stats prof made me forget. It's really amazing how much difference professors can make. Got my final on wednesday, after these lectures it should be a breeze
this video is really helpful to understand the whole concept of hypothesis I'm a A-level student and this is really helpful to me this guy is amazing teacher as he knows how to make it look simple :)
These Lectures are really amazing. What i have never understood during my classes, here i am able to understand every bit of it. Thanks a lot Professor Leonard.
Professor Leonard I'm taking a statistics course at the college you teach at this fall. Knowing this, in the back of my mind I've been asking myself "I wonder if there are any online resources like Professor Leonard's calculus videos to help me with this class." I just happened to see this video, and literally breathed a sigh of relief and said "oh thank god" in my head. Thanks for getting me through calculus, and for getting me through statistics this fall.
Wish there were more videos following Hypothesis Testing (Chapter 8) all the way through to Correlation. . . You are out of this world! Thank you so much, bello.
thanks to your videos professor I went from 68 grade to 80. You had save my statistics class. TWO more tests and I will be passing after almost failing!
Stats 112 summer session: my prof is amazing, but your lectures helped sift/refine knowledge she imparted at warp speed. LOVE the formula breakdowns. Nuke the Algebra - cut to the chase with a formula that works! After watching all of the clips, I think I can pass my final, now. Thanks, I needed that.
Professor Leonard - Thank you so very much for these lessons. I am currently taking Statistics "online" based on probably an updated version of the book you are using in your class, and having a very hard time due to not having personal instruction - I get a lot out of class/face time and am learning online classes don't really work for me. You are SAVING me in this class. Not only do you make Statistics 100% understandable, you make it interesting and enjoyable. I have more than once laughed out loud at something you said to your class! I am an adult learner going back to school for a second degree. I only wish you taught in the Rochester, NY area - I would sign up for your classes every time. It shows that you really care about your students actually learning what you are teaching them, and that is very much appreciated. Thank you so much for posting these videos online so that students outside of those in your classes can benefit from them as well. I wish I could designate 50% of my tuition to you as I am learning from you and not my actual professor! Take care and many thanks! - Amber
Thanks for this! It has helped me understand the last part of my assignment and was struggling with all the content from my university. This covered what I needed.
Professor Leonard, hope you're doing well. Once again i'd like to thank you so much for your lessons :D. I wish a merry christmas and a very happy new year!!
Great lectures as always! There's just one thing I would like clarification on: why is the null hypothesis changed to equality? I love how he shows you step by step. My teacher gets mad when we ask her simple questions or to give us more info about how he got her answers. She says that she is not going to waste her time teaching us something that we must have learnt in high school :(
Reddit talking about how math is killing them.. one student suggested Pro. Leonard. I got all the HW done in this section thanks to this lecture. Thank you
Thanks professor Leonard After watching all these videos i hope I will be able to deal with more advanced statistical problems. so far I had a FULL view of what is statistics all about although i have never had any statistical background
Very good question. You should make these statements carefully based on what you want to prove and on your intuition. If you want to test a drug for example, you will have H0: p_drug=0.5 and H1: p_drug>0.5, where p_drug is the proportion of people cured by the drug. It's very unlikely the control group (people who took the placebo) have a significant better outcome than ones who took the drug. So you don't care about p_drug signs, then state the H1 as "p different than..."
1:07:10 The analogy between statistical hypothesis testing and criminal litigation is useful conceptually. What is missing from Professor Leonard's explanation are the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt, and the presumption of innocence. He seems to be hinting at H0 as the presumption of innocence, the defendant's position, and Ha as the burden of proof, what the prosecution has to meet to demonstrate his satisfaction of the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt; not proof beyond ALL doubt, but only proof beyond REASONABLE doubt. He refers to proving the null hypotheses, but that seems to be a misconcept, just as the defendant's proving his innocence is a misconcept. The defendant's innocence is the initial presumption for the judge, jury, police, prosecution and defendant. The null hypothesis is the initial presumption for the scientist. The scientist investigates whether the null hypothesis is acceptable. The police investigate whether the presumption of innocence is acceptable. Presenting evidence the null hypothesis is unacceptable is the scientist's job. Presenting evidence that police found that the presumption of innocence is unacceptable is the prosecutor's job. The jury considers the evidence presented and makes a decision, based on plausible reasoning, whether the prosecutor has satisfied its burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt. The scientist considers his evidence and applies plausible reasoning to decide whether he's met his burden of proof that the null hypothesis is acceptable or not.

Don't you still need statistics in order to do research? I just finished a biochemistry lab report using Chi-squared testing. Like its biology, but I still used math
If ur professor can't explain it in layman's terms, it only means one thing, he or she doesn't quite understand the topic themselves.
Never give up on something you believe in.

One of the finest youtube and statistic video.
Awesome Video for learning hypothesis testing. Great Professor. Nice built as well! Thanks a lot Professor Leonard
thanks to your videos professor I went from 68 grade to 80. You had save my statistics class. TWO more tests and I will be passing after almost failing!
one of the best lectures that I have ever heard.. what a skill as a teacher.. My respects to you..
Thank you for sharing your metaphorical approach in lecture, Professor Leonard. It really helps to make the content digestible and relevant.
Working on the Udacity Nanodegree and this is exactly what I needed to fill in the gaps for the statistics section. Thank you Professor Leonard!

Thank you
Not everyone is meant to be a teacher. You are awesome and I wish most teachers were like you.
Wow, Professor Leonard rocks in Stats. The lectures were okay in Calculus, but these Stats videos are wonders - legacy of a Super Professor.
Whenever I have to study statistics the only channel I search for is Professor Leonard.... Please upload videos for chapter 9 as well. love from India
Excellent Sir . I really appreciate the patience and mastery over the subject . Kudos to you
The way you are explaining things is just amazing! Big thanks,
Statistics seems sweetest when you teach sir... deep regards, God bless you
Ur my hero professor Leonard! A true master of mathematics !
fuck sake why did i discover this guy on the day of my exam.
same lol
Same here. Tomorrow I have exam.
Thanks for this! It has helped me understand the last part of my assignment and was struggling with all the content from my university. This covered what I needed.
I love prof leonard and i want to nominate this prof the best teacher in the world ....
I am so much happy after seeing this video, it really make me understood the concepts..
thank you so much i passed my statistics exam all thanks to you, you are the best
Leonard .... you are the best. Thank you so much for helping us.
I can't thank you enough for this video! I only wish I would have found this sooner in my stats class.
Thanks so much from Egypt. This class have helped me a lot.
Professor Leonard, hope you're doing well. Once again i'd like to thank you so much for your lessons :D. I wish a merry christmas and a very happy new year!!
Thanks Martin! And the same to you :)
Great lectures as always! There's just one thing I would like clarification on: why is the null hypothesis changed to equality? It seems to me that we'd be more strictly vetting the claim if all parts thereof were tested. To change the null hypothesis to equality rather than an inequality seems like you're giving the claimant a backdoor to say that if their claim was refuted, we insufficiently tested their claim. I haven't found a good article about this anywhere.
You are really fantastic in terms of the way you deal on the topic. Thank you.
I wish you were my professor. I'm literally paying for school and watching you to learn what I need to know from my professor that teaches so screwy. I need to request a refund
You rock sir. You should get an award for even doing this for the world and people like me. I thank you and God bless.
Uhhh wish I had just watched these guys videos instead of wasting 4 years in college.
Thank you
Thanks professor Leonard
After watching all these videos i hope I will be able to deal with more advanced statistical problems. so far I had a FULL view of what is statistics all about although i have never had any statistical background
professor Leonard indeed u are the best among the rest really love your teaching style.BRAVO
Professor Leonard
best pro. i have ever seen. please keep going
The best professor!!!
Thank you so much for making this all make sense! You are a fantastic professor!
Holly Shit.... I wish he was my stats teacher XD
No word to expresses my appreciation, wonderful lecture .
i cant believe that past 5 days i struggled, this was sosoooooooooooo helpfull i cant wait to teach others
You are really an excellent professor
I am not even taking Statistics but am watching Prof. because he is a Hunk!
this professor has done it for me and i can confidently say iam set for the next exam
You are genius Prof., the Dr. Maths.....bless you
So I want to say this studypug and this channel saved my life. I have finals in 10 hours and Hypothesis testing last the only topic left.
Thank you so much for showing these complete and wonderful videos to us!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a little confused, surely if H_0 is P=.5 and H_1 is P>.5 disproving H_0 does not automatically prove H_1 as P
Such a wonderful presentation, thank you proffesor....
Hardworking + good looking teacher...💓
I get more from this free channel than from my class which costs 1000s per semester
Dr. Leonard very good and marvelous explanation. thumbs up
Extremely useful and well-explained session. Thank you.
Am loving your lectures Professor Leo
45:43 Is there a possibility that the null hypothesis is incorrect BUT the alternative hypothesis is also incorrect? I.e., a case where P < 0.5?
1:07:10 The analogy between statistical hypothesis testing and criminal litigation is useful conceptually. What is missing from Professor Leonard's explanation are the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt, and the presumption of innocence. He seems to be hinting at H0 as the presumption of innocence, the defendant's position, and Ha as the burden of proof, what the prosecution has to meet to demonstrate his satisfaction of the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt; not proof beyond ALL doubt, but only proof beyond REASONABLE doubt.
