Great review. As a previous owner of a 2003 and 2012 WRX, this new bodystyle is actually my favorite. It looks more like a “rally car” than the prior generations. Almost looks like the Crosstek STI that everyone keeps wishing for. Only two things that hold me back from considering one of these is a) the giant infotainment screen and b) the RTV issues that are pretty inherent in the BRZ/GR86 and starting to pop up in the 22 WRX. But it’s one of the best bang for the bucks IMO. In Dallas, TX they are discounting them 2-3k.
That sounds like an incredible value in Dallas! And your statement has a lot of weight to it where you’ve owned two of the most desirable body styles! 🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 yeah I don’t know why so many people don’t like the styling. One dealer here has 20 incoming, and they are already discounting the Limited’s down to $35k.
That’s incredible. I’m personally torn on the new ones. Mechanically and the chassis I really like them. But I LOVED the 2011-14 Body style, that was always the one I wanted when they were coming out. Probably also because those came out around when I was finishing high school.
For the value, WRX all the time. Yes, GR Corolla is an amazing car, but the engine is tuned almost to its max. The WRX has a lot more to offer with the after market. For the interior, price, reliability, the engine, and also the looking, I prefer the WRX. And if you want more fun, then some simple mods can lead your WRX to a 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 miles/h. Oh, also, good luck trying to get a GRC! The WRX is the true bargain.
Definitely a few trade offs with each car. I know money is less valuable these days but it’s so crazy to see the prices of loaded hot hatches or turbo AWD cars in 2023, lol. 🤪

The gr isn’t tuned to it’s maxed, it’s tuned as high as they can while maintaining Toyota level reliability. You could definitely tune the gr to 400whp with some bolt ons and still probably get 120-150k miles out of it.
@@lucian7182 Yes, you are right, still some roof with the GR but for the engine’s size, I prefer the WRX. The numbers you can get with the Subaru are also incredible. Both amazing cars, but the practicality of the WRX is above the competition.

Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting company for nearly 20 year and we're looking to sponsor some lights!
For that reason I only do the one 0-60 once it’s properly warmed up, I also think of it as not being quite as bad as the vehicle doesn’t make full power at this altitude. So even though it’s revving to its peak power point, the power going through the system isn’t quite as much as it would be at sea level. 🤷♂️😅
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 First thing I thought of @crx lol. 16 miles and you're taking it to redline, when it isn't yours. I'd be so bummed if I found out this happened to mine. The break-in procedure is extra important for turbo cars. To the altitude point, an interesting fact is turbos lose less power than a naturally aspirated one (at altitude) because the turbo will work harder to get the air/fuel mixture the car is tuned for... so, if anything, the altitude is harder on the car because turbo is working harder to force extra air in. How do you convince a dealer to get to borrow a brand new car yourself (without the employee)? Genuinely curious. When I was test driving 2 years ago, 3/3 dealerships wouldn't let you go alone and said you couldn't go over 4K rpm (2 of the 3 I drove were used too), "because it's a WRX".
I hear you, I will sometimes find slightly used current year models if I can find them. Otherwise I make sure the vehicle is thoroughly warmed up for at least 15-20m before I do my usual one 0-60 acceleration. From my research (when I would practice dialing in launches on my old LS1 Trans Am way before starting my channel) NA engines lose 3-3.5% HP per 1,000’ of density altitude, and turbo/supercharged lose half of that percent. They compress the air, but still less oxygen density in that compressed air. All the dealers I’ve worked with like this know I do this test as part of the content and real world results I want to provide (I’ve told them upfront). None of them have had any issues about it, but they know I’m otherwise very respectful of their vehicles. I also only have worked with dealers who are obviously interested in this collaboration AND that I trust. There’s other local dealers who do crazy mark ups or questionable business practices that I haven’t and won’t attempt to collaborate with. In typical dealership fashion it seems they need to ride along with you, especially WRX. They act like they’re super cars… but it is surreal to get to drive stuff like Hellcat products and other high horsepower cars that some of the salesman aren’t even suppose to test drive. Basically I do try to be very responsible with the vehicles I’m allowed to borrow. And I’ve been fortunate enough to make relationships with a few dealerships who have good local owners willing to give me a chance, and in return occasionally make some sales from the free advertising they get. Long reply 😝 but thanks for watching!
this car is just not competitive anymore; it is no longer in much of a niche but is probably a pretty good all rounder; it could have become a really competitive car if it had come out as a "Wilderness" version ie more dirt worthy and rally credentialed - it was always confused running as a fragile road going rally car because why not just get an attractive sports sedan?
You’re right, it’s a good overall car. But it’s lost its competitive niche compared to the other more powerful or capable offerings that we have access to.
It's not competitive because it has no competition anymore. Please tell me what other sedan you can get that's turbocharged, awd with a 6speed mt all while having massive tuning potential and being in the 30k range. The corolla GR doesn't count right now because Toyota only made a few thousand of them and they are being marked up like crazy.
I agree in why you’re saying. I think the word competitive has been used in different meanings between comments. You’re right in that it doesn’t have perfectly matched direct competition anymore since cars like the Evo are gone and it’s not a hatch like the GR. But also if it was and since it does get compared to GR, Type R, Golf R, etc even though a base model is less expensive the WRX has also fallen short of its “competitors” IMO. That doesn’t count it on its own as any less of a great car. It’s no different than Miata (roadster) being compared to a 500lbs heavier back seat coup BRZ, yet they do, lol. 🤷♂️🙂
That's silly,. What competes with it, new, with AWD, to 6sp manual, under 30k. NOTHING! EXCEPT another used Subaru which are kinda beat a lot of time and this is nicer and better.
Better value? Yes. Just remember that the WRX is NOT a GRC competitor. The unreleased STI would have been the competitor. I would say that the Limited and GT are questionably overpriced btw.
Car number pushers and those who don't own or drive any of the above just love to rag on the WRX. But facts are facts. AWD, 85% sold with manual, and a well-equipped base car is only $30 and being DISCOUNTED. Quick tune or just some bolt ons and you can have a 350 hp car or one with lots of non-performance mods. CTR? Try to find one for MSRP. Great car, sure, but the Honda engine has less headroom for more hp, and is smaller displacement. GR Corolla? Again, try to find one for MSRP. 3-cylinder engine, again, probably not much more room for more hp. Golf R? Again, all marked up. For the price of any one of these supposed hot hatches, you can have an Audi A4, BMW 3-series or a nice Lexus IS, and even Honda/Acuras own TLX. WRX is what hot hatches are SUPPOSED to be....AFFORDABLE.
You’re spot on! I will say I’ve seen some UK vids of the Yaris GR (same engine) and they’ve shown to hold some decent power when modded, their cylinder walls are very thick. Also, I just drove a 2017-21 body style CTR (I’ll make it public soon). It’s still more expensive than a similar new WRX 😢 but honestly initial impressions it did feel like a more solid abuse enduring car, minus the AWD benefit. I wouldn’t pay what they go for, but I totally understand now why some people would. Thanks for watching and sharing great insight! 🙂
@badbeatking80 the GRC is too tiny, no go. The CTR is fwd, no go. I feel like the wrx is the right size, has a great awd system, and these new 2.4L engines get massive gains from a simple tune if you're into that. I have a grey limited, but will keep it bone stock. It's plenty fun for me as-is, and I'd like to retain the factory reliability and warranty.
The gr corolla is hands down the better vehicle in my opinion. The new 2022 wrx doesn't really offer much over the previous generation of the wrx. It's bigger and the ride is even more harsh. The improvement is the new engine but subaru could have really pushed it and failed to do so. Even cars like the elantra n outshine the new wrx. Ultimately is pretty disappointing upgrade that subaru has raised the price on the 2022 wrx over the 2021 wrx and now did it again with the 2023 wrx.
Thanks for the Review of the new Civic with the 33 year old interior colors which is boring, depressing, cheap looking and is just like every other automobile manufacturer on the planet. I wouldn’t pay what they go for, but I totally understand now why some people would.
Thanks for watching and sharing great insight! 🙂
the gas tank is on the driver's side huh?
Had to make sure you were paying attention. 😉😁 Good catch!
Looks are subjective but the GR Corolla is a no go for me.
@@steve8803 I agree. It's a blast to drive and a true definition of practicality car should bro
Right. The GR looks like it was rear ended by a truck.
37K???? oh gosh....
🥲😅
Seems even slower on video then when I test drove it. VA pulls so much quicker
Accelerations on camera often look much slower than they felt in real life, at least in my experience lol. 😂
40k vs 72k
🤔😞 quite the difference in dealership pricing for such a similar vehicle.
1.6L 3 cylinder engine 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You do not understand automotive engineering.
@@mrsleep0000 4 cylinder peekaboo spark plugs boxer ... lol
Thanks for the Review of the new Civic with the 33 year old interior colors which is boring, depressing, cheap looking and is just like every other automobile manufacturer on the planet.
I get a LOT of complements on the saddle brown leather interior in my Forester Touring !
Everyone else who accepts the 1990 interior colors are like dead fish floating down stream into the sea of other dead fish.
Be different, demand classy, rich looking, cheerful automobiles
Sliding around on leather seats is not ideal in a performance car. Hence the ultra suede in the top two trims.
@@AdamJayTechnoElectro If the seats are bolstered correctly, you don’t slide.
I don’t see anyone complaining who owns Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Since when did people buy a WRX because they were "classy" or "rich looking"
