The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest and special sites in Christianity. Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the church is home to two of the holiest sites in Christianity - the site where Jesus was crucified, known as Calvary, and the tomb where Jesus was buried and then resurrected. Today, the tomb is enclosed by a shrine called the Aedicula. The final four Stations of the Cross, or Via Dolorosa, are also located inside the church.
The New Testament tells that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull”, identified as an area of stone quarries outside the city’s walls at the time. Around a decade after Jesus’s crucifixion, a third wall was built to enclose the area of his execution and burial within the city. This provides validation for the Holy Sepulchre’s location inside the today’s Old City of Jerusalem.
After he had a vision of a cross in the sky in 312 AD, Constantine the Great converted to Christianity and sent his mother, Empress Helena, to Jerusalem in search of Jesus’s tomb. She found a relic of the cross near a tomb, leading her to believe she had found Calvary. In 326 AD, Constantine ordered a church built at the site. All the soil and debris that had gathered over the centuries was removed from the cave, revealing a rock-cut tomb identified as the burial site of Jesus.
The Church was thus built over the two holy sites. The great basilica or Martyrium encloses the traditional site of Calvary in one corner, and across the way, the Anastasis (“Resurrection”), encloses the cave tomb of Jesus’s burial. The church was finally consecrated on September 13, 335 AD. The wooden doors of the church’s main entrance are still the original doors from 326 AD, putting into perspective the ancient grandeur of this holy church.
Inside the church entrance, a stairway leads up to Calvary (Golgotha), the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and the most extravagantly decorated part of the church. The exit from this site is down another stairway that leads to the ambulatory.
Stone of Anointing
Calvary is made up of two chapels, one is Greek Orthodox and the other is Catholic. The Greek Orthodox chapel’s altar is over the rock of Calvary, also the 12th Station of the Cross. The rock can be touched through a special hole in the floor beneath the altar, but be prepared to wait in a line as this is one of the main reasons people visit the church. The rock can also be viewed through the protective glass on both sides of the altar. In between the Catholic and Greek altars, a statue of Mary marks the 13th Station of the Cross.
Stone of anointing
Inside the church’s entrance is the Stone of Anointing, believed to be where Jesus’s body was prepared for burial. The modern mosaic along the wall depicts the anointing of Jesus’s body. Lamps with candles and incense hang along with an ornate stand over the stone.

The Aedicule is a small chapel housing the Holy Sepulchre. It has two rooms - one holds the Angel’s Stone, believed to be a fragment of the stone that sealed Jesus’s tomb, the other is the tomb of Jesus. In the 14th century, a marble plaque was placed on the tomb to protect it from further damage caused by flocks of pilgrims.
The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Armenian Apostolic all have rightful access to the interior of the tomb, and all three hold Holy Mass there daily. Between May 2016 and March 2017, the Aedicule underwent painstaking restoration and repair after the structure was declared unsafe by the Israel Antiquities

Many years ago on the day before Easter, in the morning - my husband was up watching TV while I was still asleep -- he told me that Jesus Christ appeared to him out of thin air, he was in solid form, not ghostly. Jesus was wearing a white robe and a gold rope belt. I never thought to ask what Jesus looked like. The Lord spoke to my husband (who is Christian as am I) Jesus Christ told my husband - “ keep the faith, I’m coming back soon and I’m leaving an angel.” I love you Jesus, thank you for forgiving my sins. Wait, JESUS is the one who said that?!! I never realized... it is something only Catholics seem to believe, other so-called 'christians' believing only someone who believes only in Jesus as God and in the Bible as the inerrant Word can be 'saved'. @@kaguscon Hey there, great question! First of all, Jesus is not God, and therefore has no power to control anything that happens in the world-that is God’s Right alone. Jesus was merely a prophet & messenger of God, who called others to join him in serving & worshipping God alone, just like all the other messengers who had come & gone before him.
Now as for your question, the answer all has to do with the purpose of life-which is that life is a test. God has created death & life in order to test us as to which us acts most excellently. As such, both good & evil exist, so that God can see how we will behave-whether we will respond to such situations by working to make things right & persevere in patience, or whether we will sit back and do nothing, or perhaps even make things worse by abusing the free will & conscience that God has given us all.
In the end, everyone is guaranteed to experience death. God tests us with both well-being and suffering, as a means of trial. And to Him we will all eventually return. So as for those who had faith and did the right things, they will be granted God’s mercy & eternal happiness in Heaven. While as for those who were ungrateful & faithless, and let their sinful desires consume them-they will be justly punished in Hell for everything they used to do; and God will not do the least injustice to anyone. In the end, no one will he treated unfairly.
So finally, realize that the world you are imagining God should have created (with no suffering at all, and only happiness)-that world DOES exist. It’s called Heaven-and it’s the ultimate destination that God is inviting us all to, where THIS world is the journey & test to get there. I hope that makes sense. Peace :)

We know that it isn’t the greatest evil that one can face in the world. But dehumanizing and alienating people is worse. Ah, this phrase... I first heard it in college at the Newman Center when they said prayers that referenced it. I have come to learn that this Earth literally is the 'Vale of Tears' referred to, and that you shouldn't necessarily ask Christ to save you from it... in this Valley of Darkness, He walks with you and His angels are closer that you realize, HE is closer than you realize. It is when you are at your darkest and most sinful that the dark powers are closest to you but so too is the Lord who shields you from them, at your side, your companion and guide in the dark of the valley.
Some people do leave the valley, or think they do. Others are kept there, perhaps so that they become wizened, stronger, to become guides themselves to help drag the fallen to their feet and help them along the way; even the Lord Himself needed help when he fell.
Give thanks for the Vale of Tears. Give thanks that Christ put you through this trial, gave you this cross, so that you can become an icon among people and powerful and humbled beyond what you thought you could be!

My grandmother visited all the historical places of Christ in Israel a long time ago, and she would tell me about them, but her Alzheimer’s got bad very quickly so she had forgotten a lot. These videos feel like all the missing pieces to her stories. I would love to walk, where Jesus himself once walked.
