  • We could have booked a place anywhere in Lisbon. But somehow we ended up in a neighbourhood that just happens to be a major tourist attraction.

I stayed in the Alfama last August for my first ever trip to Lisbon. I’m from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and have Portuguese parents (from the Azores). That first trip for me was more than just a cool place to be, but a discovery and a huge expansion of appreciation for the culture that my parents came from. I made a point of staying in the Alfama, not only to experience its narrow streets, but to listen to fado, the music my parents would listen to on the radio at the end of a long work week. Hearing the “fadistas” in the distance while I layed my head down after a long day on foot took me back to the sounds of my childhood. I learned so much, and I’ve developed a full blown love affair with the culture of my parents and ancestors. The history, the architecture, the language, the music, the food, and most importantly, the people. I will be back, not just to see Lisbon, but to see more of Portugal itself. The biggest emotional impact for me, was the Sé - Lisbon’s Cathedral. Once I toured it, and found out how old it was, I found myself wanting everyday to walk by it, touch its walls, and whenever possible, eat a meal within its shadow. Thanks for bringing back great memories of that trip, and I intend to make many more.

Thanks so much for sharing...it's wonderful to get the perspective of someone with roots in Portugal. Lisbon a really beautiful city -- I'm not surprised that so many people fall in love with their first visit. I hope you get to have many more wonderful trips there.

I LOVE your apartment this time! But yes, as someone said below, Lisbon has hills and stairs. Its sidewalks are made of marble cubes and when it rains, they're very slippery. It can be done - I use a cane - but you have to pay attention all the time.

    • @OurFreedomYears
      @OurFreedomYears  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Isn't it so charming! It's been such a great spot. But yes, we have to be very mindful everywhere we go...the sidewalks can be very difficult to manage.

Welcome to Lisbon! My husband and I are big fans of yours--and fellow travelers. We also have sold or donated almost everything we own to slow travel the world. We're also "living" in Alfama at the moment. We love it. Hope to see you as we're out and about (and I will try not to be too much of a fan girl).

Your dogs are extremely well behaved. I love the look on his face when you were carrying him. His eyes looked like he was so relaxed and could sleep in your hands. Lisbon looks like such a great place to explore. Your Airbnb had a great location and so much character. You always find the best places. Now, I understand why so many people love to visit Portugal.

Hello (again) from Cefalu, Sicily! We stayed in Lisbon for a bit and then made our way to Cascais for the duration of our visit. Totally relate to Toronto food reference. I find the same thing here in Sicily but nothing beats the OG.💕

locals cannot afford those new refurbished buildings...
no powdered sugar, no cinnamon for the natas :(
good job getting the meia de leite :)
the ginjinha bottles do look home made, probably the same way my mother makes it, sour cherries, brandy, sugar and cinnamon sticks!

Loved the video. Hoping there's more to come from Lisboa!
One "miradouro" that is usually not crowded and has excelent views is Miradouro do Recolhimento (should open at 10), close to the castle. If you're planning on visiting the Castle you should definitely go there and also to the Church of Santa Cruz do Castelo's bell tower.
I do guided photo tours here in Lisbon. Get in touch if this is something that may interest you. :)
Have a great time in Lisbon!

I agree. “Meia de leite” would be the cappuccino without the fency foam whereas “galão” is also sort of Latte maquiato.

I heard that Westerners eat hamburgers, fries, fried chicken, Coke, sandwiches, coffee, pasta, pizza, hotdog , steak cereal, bread, and milk for three meals a day. Is this true? Or do Americans and Europeans eat differently?
