- With their first round pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, the New York Jets chose Texas A&M fullback Roger Vick. The pick was infamous for the fan who shouted out "oh no" the moment that commissioner Pete Rozelle announced it. But did the pick make sense at the time? Yep backs like Jim brown Larry csonka, Franco Harris, were officially fullbacks but we're featured backs given those times. Lynn Cain of the falcons was a good ball carrying fullback but William Andrews was such a great tailback they had to feature him

I was the fan that yelled "Oh No!!" The draft was held on a Tuesday back then- all 12 rounds. The video misses a lot of things:
1- Paige was upset at the Jets in 1985. Paige had a bonus clause in his contract if he scored more than 10 TD's. Once Paige scored his 10th TD in '85 the Jets never gave him a chance to score an 11th.
2- Vick was selected as much to justify the disastrous selection of Mike Haight in 1986 as much as anything else. The Jets desperately needed a left tackle after reaching for Haight. The players the Jets should have taken in '87 were either Harris Barton (SF) or Bruce Armstrong (NE), players selected immediately after the Jets took Vick and players who were both All Pro on multiple occasion.

Hey thanks for reminding me the Lions took a fullback in the first round in 1983 instead of Dan Marino.
Literally every team in the league except the Dolphins and Washington missed out on Marino.
@@pronkb000 Tampa Bay didn’t, ahem, pass on Marino. But that’s only because they traded that first round pick the year before to Chicago for the Bears’ second round pick that year. The Buccaneers took Booker Reese with that second round pick only after sending up the wrong name in the first round.
The Lions couldn't evaluate qb's so they would have missed Marino. Sorry. But they did steal Marino replacement Scott Mitchell lol.

I feel bad for the guy. He was talented, seemed to work hard and have a good attitude. He just didn't have much luck evidently. Fumbling is a problem few backs ever seem to solve if it hits them.
I use to follow the draft somewhat back then, and I was a fan of College Football. I never heard his name back then, as a Top college player to look for. Maybe Texas A&M was on probation in those days. However, the irony, back then I had heard of Christian Okoyo. There was this buzz about a 270 pound Fullback, with speed, from a Division II State School in Southern California. A guy who was running up 200 yards a game, that no one could tackle. I saw Okoyo score 3 touchdowns in the Senior Bowl, yet I still had not heard the name Roger Vick.
He wasnt talented imo.

The way Roger Vick played ball in college would honestly translate well today in the NFL. He could make a very solid traditional tailback today.
BTW, the 49ers drafted a fullback in 1994 in the first round, William Floyd, who is still remembered fondly by many fans since he was a good player. So yeah, taking a fullback in the first round back then wasn't outlandish like it would be seen as now.
The 49ers were absolutely loaded at the time and that was kind of a luxury pick at the end of the 1st round. Floyd had a few great years and then disappeared.
Floyd was great early on. If it wasn't for that injury in 1995, he was on pace to be even better than his predecessor Tom Rathman.
Floyd holds the distinction of being the last ever FB drafted in the first round.
Maybe for an 8-8 or better team with a good core in place, that needs a specific skill position to push them that bit further to greatness.

Roger Vick wasn't the ONLY player MISUSED by the New York Jets and their front office.
I love how he spent the off-season working on his speed when it's like, THAT'S NOT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, BRO! You're a fullback who can't block or catch and you fumble too much! I guess he was counting on being so fast that nobody would be able to punch the ball out or something, despite at least one of those fumbles being an unforced error? Weird decision; I feel bad for this guy, as I do for every highly touted player who doesn't make it in the league.
When you think about it, it's literally impossible for every player drafted in the first round every year to be good in the NFL, let alone great.
@@DolFan316 I thought Vick was an ok player, but no way in hell a first round talent. The Jets for the most part, did suck at the draft. They would draft for need, instead of taking the best players on the board.
@@DolFan316 There's studies that show that only about half of the 1st round players turn out to be good (i.e. eventual multi-year starters), much less Pro Bowl-level. The draft really is more of an art than a science.
Rozelle seemed to delight in trolling New York fans during the draft, as witnessed by him smiling as NY fans booed the selections of Phil Simms and Ken O’Brien. In fact, in 1983 Rozelle paused after saying “Quarterback” to give Jets fans a glimmer of hope they had drafted Dan Marino, before dropping the Ken O’Brien bomb on them.
You did a video about the 1974 Draft the other day, and someone mentioned George Allen in a response. Allen, as Washington’s coach that year, traded the same first-round pick to both the Rams and Jets. Rozelle and the league had to make a determination of who got that pick. Once you understand how on occasions like this when Rozelle trolled NY fans, and the fact that he worked for the Rams before becoming NFL commissioner, it’s not a surprise that the pick was awarded to the Rams.
OK, this may be overly conspiratorial, and Rozelle didn’t stay commissioner for 29 years while tipping the scales like my inner Oliver Stone suggested. But I still find it worth interest.
Not only did Pete work for the Rams before becoming commissioner, but he was drinking buddies with Carrol Rosenbloom, owner of the Rams who later became owner of the Colts. When the Dolphins signed Don Shula as coach, the Colts accused the Fins of tampering even though the Dolphins had worked out the deal with Rosenbloom's son. Rozelle helped out his buddy by taking the Fins first round pick away and giving it to Rosenbloom's Colts.

If it had been me I would've given that pick to whoever Allen first traded it to. Seems like the only fair way to me. Once the first trade is made, the second trade of the same pick becomes null and void. So if the Rams had been the first team traded with I see nothing wrong with them getting the pick. And it seems likely that was the case, as Allen once had his team stocked with so many of his ex-Rams players that they were called the Ramskins.
Cornelius Bennett for some reason is not in the HoF.

Paige wound up being so good for the Dolphins that I can forgive him for being a Jet.
I could see a FB getting drafted in the first round today if they catch and block better than the TEs.

The Giants did something similar just a few years later in 1991. The Giants drafted FB Jarrod Bunch late in the first round.
The Giants were seemingly stacked in the backfield coming off a Super Bowl season. They had the aging but still productive Ottis Anderson. They had David Meggett, the closest thing the plodding Giants O had to a gamebreaker. And Rodney Hampton, their first round pick in 1990, and future franchise back.
Bunch wound up being a bust, being done in by injuries and lasted only three years in NY. Statistically career wise, Roger Vick outperformed and lasted longer than Jarrod Bunch.

Allonzo Highsmith was a FB at Miami and was drafted third overall in 87. By the Houston Oilers. He blocked for running backs like Mike Rozier and the Oilers, first round pick in 88 Lorenzo white.
Here’s something interesting. In 2010, the final wildcard spot was decided based on strength of victory against Green Bay, Tampa bay, and the New York giants (all 10-6.) however, Green Bay won the tiebreaker with an astounding .475 strength of victory greatly overshadowing the other teams to eliminate them.
Rozelle loved trolling Jets fans. The 1983 draft when he announces their pick the way he says “quarterback” making the fans believe Marino was coming right before dropping the bomb on them they were getting Ken O’Brian was pretty hilarious too.

He should have thanked the Jets before they won the SB there was some uneasiness about the merger...so if you think about it Joe and Weeb saved his bacon.
Roger Vick would resurface in the short-lived World League of American Football for the Orlando Thunder, and he was second on the team in rushing yards with 458 on 116 carries, averaging 3.9 yards per carry, and scored 4 touchdowns. The Thunder went 8-2 and captured the WLAF North American East Division Championship. They then blew out the Birmingham Fire in the semifinals before dropping a close one to the Sacramento Surge in the World Bowl.

Aside from the one play in this video, Vick was the one Jets RB from the late '70s to the early '00s who didn't slash, gash and bash my team. In 6 games he had just one other TD and ran for a total of 134 yards with 8 catches.
From the era where the NFL nailed the draft…those drafts in NY with Rozelle announcing the names of the players were great. And when the Jets came up, it was glorious with the Jets fans letting the world know just how much they hated their pick (and for the most part, they were right) and Rozelle smirking his way through. It was pure theater rather than today’s over the top, artificial, ‘let’s create a moment’ that isn’t there, traveling carnival show of boredom.
Great story. Sucks for Roger Vick, and a lot of other guys in his position that seem to really give it their all, but at the end of the day you just aren't good enough to stick around in the NFL. But I guess that's life, and to Roger's credit he realized that with a positive attitude towards the end. Hopefully he didn't get too down on how his career played out. He got to play in the NFL, and making it that far is pretty remarkable in itself. It would have been worse if he was just a lazy yahoo that didn't try to excel.
The next Fullback taken was Okoye.
As a Broncos' fan, my favorite memory of Okoye is when Steve Atwater obliterated him.
@@82dorrin Okoye, was a great fullback, but I remember he started to get cocky as this unstoppable runner. Players like Atwater don't take lightly to shit like that. Steve, was great in his own right. He was clean, but he was mean. The first thing he'd clean ... was your clock.
That might have been the game that ended him, seriously I went back and watched Hawks/Chiefs (the Derrick Thomas......oh yeah and Krieg to Skansi too game) and Okoye had like 3.2 per carry going in, TF?

Tony Richardson was undrafted. As a rookie he was on the practice squad with the 1994 Dallas Cowboys.
Much as Mack Strong, who spent his rookie year of 1993 (undrafted) on the Seahawks practice squad and then moved up when they traded John L. Williams

As a Giants fan, I had the same feeling in 2018 when we drafted a RB at #2...and, again, in 2019 when we drafted a 3rd-round talent #6 overall. The Jets are not the only team in New York whose fans have had to endure some bone-headed decisions on draft day.
Barkley's a real deal though whether or not he bounce back from the injury is another matter.

Roster management was interesting in the 80s, in 81 the Jets had six RBs with at least 70 carries. Most played all 16 games.

I think the only interesting thing that would have made this story interesting wasn't in this story and that was Roger Vick was Micheal Vick's dad.
You are wrong about Bruce Coslet having no ties "whatsoever" to Joe Walton. He was his Offensive Coordinator when Vick began his career and showed great patience in keeping him involved. The reason Roger Vick stands out is because the Jets had some stellar choices out of college at OT and CB and could have even traded down to get a few more picks. The Vikings would have made such a deal.
Damn you showed the Bills about 10 times and I'd guess their jersey and helmets looked different 9 times.

Although runningbacks are not the key targets in modern drafts, teams still draft 230lbs runningbacks in first and second round. Najee Harris, Leonard Fournette, A.J. Dillon ... and Derrick Henry. And Vick ran like most of them. Had speed and power and decent agility.
Nowadays teams draft total of 4-5 runningbacks in 1st and 2 round together. When Vick was drafted, 7 in first round and another three in 2nd round. And two of then were fullbacks. Vick and Christian Okoye.
You should look at the players drafted within 5-7 picks of Vicks- two turned in great OL- Bruce Armstrong and Harris Barton. But, the Jets had already drafted an OL in the first round in 86. So, that likely wasn't going to happen. The first pick in the second round in 87 was Nate Odomes who was a good DB for the Bills.
If it was the right thing to do, the Jets did the opposite.
Let's not forget the Jets also drafted Jeff Lageman, a defensive end, two years later and Pete Rozelle got a similar reaction after reading off that name!
I think the biggest issue with this pick is that the backfield was arguably one of the places they could probably have skimped a bit on. The pass defense was fucking atrocious while the offensive line needed help at BOTH tackles.
Put yourself in the shoes of that fan. You just watched the Jets make a decent playoff run, which had a good run D while being beyond terrible in pass D. But they did it, and the offense looked great at times, including QB Ken O'Brien and his backup Pat Ryan played well too.
Then Bernie Kosar puts nearly FIVE HUNDRED YARDS on you, and sends you home packing.
This team needs help. You can't have good seasons giving up 500 more yards than the next worst pass defense in the NFL. You can't rely on only running between the tackles.
Rozelle comes out. You're hoping for someone to give some great help - maybe Harris Barton or Bruce Armstrong (both taken right after) at OT - maybe Nate Odomes at Corner.
Fullback. He announces a god damn Fullback. Tony Paige wasn't good enough, and instead of paying him and drafting some help your front office decided to replace him.

You can always tell those who truly don't know the game and the positions. There was nothing wrong with picking Vick (Brian Thomas is right) (a high school teammate of mine) since he was a very good fullback who was actually a running back in HS and College. Fullbacks are blocking and valve players they are not typically your lead rusher or a massive output player. The only problem then was coaching not my friend Oogie.

The best part about that is they already had two really good TE's on their roster (Johnny Mitchell and Fred Baxter), and had a real need at DT, but passed up on Warren Sapp to draft Kyle Brady.............hilarious..............

Def a disapointment but I gotta add he was a class act & good dude. As a kid I used to visit the Jets training camp at Hofstra College in the summer. I think it was 1988 he stopped to sign a autograph and even spent a few mins chatting with me & mostly my Uncle.

What's even worse is that Vick didn't even have the most rushing yards of a Texas A&M back from the '87 draft. That would be his teammate Rod Bernstine, who was somehow taken just 3 picks after by the Chargers despite only 443 yards rushing in college. Yes, you read that right. And yet in the NFL he ran for over 1700 more yards than Vick, with 83 more catches to boot.
Fullback or Halfback? The style of play in the 80’s was definitely way different than how it was played in the 90’s & 2000’s where the Fullback position was still a primary part of the offense.
as a long suffering Jets fan this rings true ! I remember the pick and Vicks lack of productivity - Onzy Elam was another classic pick by the green and white - oh the pain. How do they pass on Greg Lloyd for Onzy !?

Onzy was a third round pick. He was a speed pass rusher in college, and I guess they were thinking of using him in the 3-4. Did not work out, and Onzy did not stay in the NFL very long. Cannot really compare him to Greg Lloyd in the draft. Lloyd was a find for Pittsburgh. He was a late draft choice, that turned out to be a gem.
A fullback with fumbleitis is not gonna last long, although 4 years is the avg. span of an NFL back's career.

Roger Vick ran too tall for being a rather lighter weight Fullback.
He ran fast like a Track athlete BUT it made him easy to pull/push off-balance, especially at the start of the play, when he hadn't been able to reach full speed yet.
He also didn't cut or juke very well - again, from running too upright.
You will see a team used a fullback again now you see big running backs that are fullback with running back speed and you see threw time Larry Zonka , The Bus , Henry the Titan literally but Tampa Bay Alsott , bears Munster and so but you'll start to see the fullback slowly get put back in the offensive game plan.
It looks worse today because even the existence of a defined fullback has all but disappeared.
Some innovative OC will figure out how to use the fullback, score 500 points in a season and the position will be all the rage again. Just watch.

The first thing he needed was a Head Coach, which the Jets had in name, but hardly in ability. Walton, probably would have put handles on the football, so Vick would not drop it. Of course with handles, O'Brien wouldn't be able to throw it.

I don't know. His momentum carried him into the end zone. Believe it or not the rules allow for something called the player's 'impetus' carrying him into the end zone, he can still take a knee for a touch back. So, idk. Would be interesting to see how they ruled on that.
In 85 they got a safety cause that happened with Louie Breeden, so Ken O'Brien will always have the rare achievement of "throwing a safety"
Obviously the Ricky Watters play in 2000 changed everything, so that will probably stand for the rest of time

i do have to point out....Keith Byars was a tailback at Ohio State, not a fullback, he became a fullback later in his NFL career, and Okoye played tailback in the Chiefs Single back/Ace Formation that so many teams ran in those days. These guys weren’t playing the same position as Roger Vick
Life in the NFL.
Vick didn't really play FB though. As you can see from most of his highlights in college, he played tailback, and was just listed as a FB because he was big.
No he was a fullback, A&M used a flexbone offense then, in the Flexbone your fullback lines up directly behind the QB and you have two halfbacks playing off the edge of the line like a tight end off the line or sometimes in the slot, and you run a lot of triple option out of it. One problem with the flexbone though is the fullback does not really lead block hardly ever, mostly running play fakes on running plays where he doesnt get the ball and often times doing the same thing on passing plays, he main purpose in the offense is serving as the first option in the triple option and taking the bulk of short yardage runs. Vicks problem was not being able to adapt to the pro style offense, he had no idea how to lead block out of I formations or split T pro set formations like most NFL running offenses used at the time.
@@chrish931 None of this really matters. He didn't play the traditional "lead blocker" position that the NFL associates "fullback" with. He was a tailback in an offense that just refers to the tailback as a "fullback".
It's like calling a slot receiver a running back because the offense calls them "Slotbacks"

Sanders’ coach with the Lions, Wayne Fontes, asked if he wanted to go back into the Lions last game of the season against Atlanta to get the rushing title. The Lions had clinched the victory by this point. Sanders declined, letting another running back finish the game. That other running back? Tony Paige.
