This time I was able to use optical flow on some shots. So if there is first clip with faster spin and then slower one the later is done with optical flow. It seems to work surprisingly well even on this videos and since we had lights for 1 000 000 fps we were usually using quite short shutter times on slower frame rates like 100 000 fps resulting also good performance with optical flow. I don't know when 100 000 fps turned into relatively slow frame rate but it is now :D

I would say that everything over 200 000fps and the ring absolutely butchers everything else just because it has so much larger resolution than any Phantom. For example at 1 000 000 fps we have 10 times more pixels with the ring than any phantom can offer

I have spent quite lot of time with Phantom v2512 and even with that anything over 300 000 fps isn't going work anymore on TH-cam since it's too ugly but the 1 000 000 fps stuff from this just looks so good! And seems that optical flow works also surprisingly well on most of shots at 30-50% speed so I can make effective frame rate to be around 2 000 000 fps and still have 330x330 resolution.
Combining the cutting-edge cameras they'd already developed with a photographic technique that predates "The Matrix" using software and off-the-shelf networking hardware is brilliant. Kron Tech has created a new technology that has expanded the human ability to see the unseen. I imagine manufacturers interested in improving the high-stress performance of their products will be very interested in Kronos' products and services. It wouldn't surprise me if they find their business expanding rapidly very soon. I hope they will still be able to find the time to help TH-camrs make cool videos like this from time to time.
It's cool that unlike some channels that do the same stuff ad nauseum, you guys have branched out and are doing more and more interesting things. (Not that I am bored of the hydraulic press stuff, you manage to keep that interesting too). You've kind of become the spiritual successors of the Mythbusters for making amazing videos of things exploding. Keep doing crazy stuff like this. It's awesome! BTW, if you want some ideas for other things to shoot with the ring, what about putting sandwiches, food, or other things on the router and watching them fall apart? Less danger, more delicious. Or, maybe put a Tesla coil inside the ring and film the sparks in slow-mo. That would be awesome too. (Consult an electrician or physicist first to make sure you can protect the ring from the high voltage and electrical interference first though).
Even better - I’d like to see them shrink coins with electromagnets... just remove the typical shroud/shield/cover, step outside, and flip the switch 😵
I suspect it is an artifact of the software that is using the output of the ring of cameras and combining it into a smoothly moving image. Either that, or it is proof that CD's have a soul...
The vinyl record breaking was the most amazing thing! It’s so weird that it starts on a single point on the edge. Then when the shrapnel seems to just hover away from the center piece it gets dangerously beautiful. Great success guys! (which includes Anni)

It's shocking to see the record resonate to the point of shattering, but even more so that the edge is nearly approaching the speed of sound. It's amazing that the LP is able to maintain some level of stress at these speeds. The two tier CD slowmo shot was just great! Nice work guys ;)
That was very good photography! Interesting how the fractures all start at once on the CD's but on the LP record it started on one edge and propagated inward.
This made me think of how hypercars can't really go over 350-400kmh without special and fresh wheels and tires . One of the things that are holding back landspeed records is aerodynamics and wheel + tire technology. The wheels and tires spin so fast at higher speed , they could easily disintegrate . Not anyone would want over 400kmh in a car .
It will need much higher speed. It might be like a shrapnel grenade (if not more powerful). It might be a bit too dangerous. Would be cool to see though.
The reason why it breaks from the edge like that is that the CD is injection molded through a small port in the mold, and that port is where the cd fails because of the orientation of the polymers in that location is perpendicular to the stress caused by fast spinning. Its cool to see how the cracks follow the flow path of the plastic.
It's about kinetic energy (½mv*v) of the plastic and not force. If the box would be made of foam (soft and thick) than penetration depth is very high, but the force is low because the decceleration of the plastic is low as well.
When you think how fast (or slow) the spindle is spinning in the ultra slow motion and knowing how fast it was spinning in reality vs the speed the fragments were leaving after fracture, those shards are really shifting!!!!
For giggles: rapidly bending a CD (or DVD or BluRay) will usually shatter it. Specifically label-side-out because that's actually where the data pattern and the shiny aluminium reflector layer is.
I think watching fast spinning things synchronized is one of the best real world applications of this ring. Actually, I can't really think of other reasons (other than heaps of fun and amazing looking footage), except if you could control the rotation while playback. That way you could turn things around while observing them, but I don't remember their trigger strategy anymore...

I think you would have to have also really bad luck since they are not going that deep. Maybe if you get hit to your neck or somewhere else with blood vessels you might die from hit
It's interesting to see how the pieces keep rotating after the CD breaks. If you look at the big pieces they always have the same side towards the camera even when they are in the air.

I imagine being able to see exact points of failure or stress would be an incredible step forward for engineering
You could also create some fantastic 3D images/videos with 3 points in the ring taking photos together. (running at 1/3FPS)
