I don’t know if this is relevant or not but dude as a bigger guy in mushy east coast waves finding proctor surfboards with their monstachief model has been a total game changer for me. It would be cool to see you review his monsta line of boards! Pete mendia rides proctors and seared by them as well, Todd proctor has something really special going on in his shaping bay!! Legit tried tons of ci’s like the pod mod and the ultra joe to get the 40 liters I need but the monstachief with the jet single channel bottom.. I pop up and the board just want to squirt with speed and loves laying over on rail. I’ll always have a monsta in my quiver they go insane!
Thanks for constantly cranking out these amazing reviews (and for responding to all our comments asking you to compare boards 😁). For 4+ surf in non-hallow conditions, which board would you prefer and what are the reasons which led you to that decision? Sub Driver 2.0, Inferno 72, or Highline?
The Highline has a lot of rocker… I say that’s a true HPSB and it’s not a good comparison to the i72 or SD 2.0. The I72 seems to be more versatile in 1-6’ surf as small wave performance board for my style of surfing. I like my boards a bit shorter to surf the pocket quicker and I feel like it’s suited more to a back footed or neutral footed surfer. As I said in the review… the SD 2.0 felt a little long in the smaller surf for my likings. The straighter outline of the SD 2.0 seems to favor more neutral -front footed surfers and I had to adjust my style of back footed surfing to start connecting with it. The custom SD 2.0 in Light Speed felt better in 1-4’ compared to the 5’8” but as soon as the waves were over head then the 5’80 started to excel for me. The I72 felt solid on me in 1-6’

My 6" Carbon wrap subdriver is in my top 3 favorite boards ever.....shreds in anything florida has to offer...lucky I grew up and live in most consistent spot in florida
I have two pyzel phantoms 5’8s - one in eps with a wooden stringer and the other in electralyte. The electralyte is my fav. I love both these boards but im very curious about the sub driver 2.0 in pu and eps. Thanks for the review. I like Sub Driver 2.0, I usually surf on beach breaks and I think it's an irregular board. In some waves I think it is very good and in others it is very bad. My other boards are CI Fever is Two Happy. Both are far superior to Sub Driver 2.0 in my opinion and work best in all conditions where I've used SD.
The Fever is one of the best and all round surfboard ever. The way the board manuvers without almost losing speed is something that is hard to find in others boards. I'm curious to see what a Fever 2.0 will be...
I was surfing the fever in more slopey waves and it felt kinda slow compared to my other boards with flatter rocker. Do you always have to surf it on rail to get speed or are you able to get speed just going straight down the line? Are the waves more punchy at your spots?
Great episode. My only question left is how does the 5.8 poly board feel paddle power wise and entry into the wave when you compare it to other boards with similar volume? The volume of the stock dims of the 5.8 is on the lower edge of my favourite volume and im not sure if i will need that extra foam under me when its very small or mushy. Thoughts?
The board paddles similar to most small wave performance boards like the Rocket Wide, NB2, Wilko F13, etc… I would say similar to the Driver 2.0 as a HPSB. The Sub Driver 2.0 is not my first choice for 1-3’ mushy surf. I would rather go with the Uber Driver XL or PJ Pro. They carry more speed and have more glide with less effort on my part compared to the SD 2.0
Noel… I could be wrong, but SD 2.0 at times reminded me of Sharpeye Storms, as it has less rocker and thinner rails . In weak waves I need the thicker rails and in strong waves I need more rocker.
That’s a pretty good board comparison. The Storms and S D 2.0 surf pretty similar… I found the SD 2.0 had more hold in overhead surf, especially in choppy conditions. My custom SD 2.0 Light Speed had thicker rails and it went better in smaller waves, but when the waves were overhead I struggled to bury the rail quickly. That’s a combination of EPS being topical and the thicker rail. I suggest ordering the SD 2.0 with a little thicker rail (Bro Dims) with a focus on 1-4’ surf in Light Speed. If your looking for a HPSB then keep the rails thinner to knife into the wave easier.

The Phantom paddles better with more glide and likes to carve. The SD 2.0 offers more high performance surfing in the pocket. The SD 2.0 surfs more vertical and it’s more radical. Remember…. the Lost team riders shred the SD 2.0 on the QS. The Phantom is more user friendly geared more for intermediate to Advanced surfers.
Awesome review Noel, I have a question. For a daily driver you're surfing in mostly 2'-6' waves (Southern California), would you prefer the Driver 2.0 or Sub Driver 2.0?
I tested 3 different fin sets on my Sub Driver 2.0 - JS Med. PC, Filipe Toledo Lg. PC, and finally the Al Merrick Lg. PC. AM's with the more pronounced rake felt amazing. The AM's held and performed well in most conditions. The Filipe's - which are closer to a neutral fin - went good on fatter waves, maybe with a higher tide or and softer sections. The medium JS fins were a miss for me, which may have just been a size issue. I feel like Noel was pretty spot on with his assessment about fins. I'm 5'10" about 170lbs, my sub driver 2.0 is 5'9" 19.00" x 2.32" 27.25 L. Hope that helps someone out there!

NB2 carries more speed, pivots faster, and more radical. The NB2 shreds 1-4’ surf better. The Phantom is more user friendly and handles 4-7’ surf better.
I know you haven’t ridden the original sub driver but you might be able to help with this question. Im looking to fit a gap. I have a 5’8 black & white great for bigger days on the Encinitas reefs. Then I have 5’5 neck beard I ride on smaller days all over. Im surfing oceanside 90% of those smaller days and i feel like the neck beard just doesn’t surf top to bottom like im trying to achieve on those 3-5 beach break days. Im thinking sub-driver 5’7-5’6 will be perfect for this gap. My only concern is the 2.0 seems like it wont be all that different from my neck beard. seems like the original sub driver has a little more kick in the nose and tail that will fit better in that beach break pocket. Whats you’re opinion? Thanks for your time!
The Firewire techs are a bit more durable in regards to pressure dents for sure. FF, Spinetek, Lightspeed, Carbon Wrap, are roughly a 6.5 out of 10. PU/Poly is a 4 out of10 when it comes to durability with a stock glass job

Cant believe how guided and based by volume you guys are. What about rail line when you go down to 5'6.5? Of course that board is not the type of board to go so short.
Dominator 2 is more forgiving, paddles better and Carrie’s more speed compared to S Driver 2. The S D2.0 will out perform the D2 in the pocket and loves to be surfed off the front foot.
The SD 2.0 seems to suit a neutral or front footed surfer due to its straighter outline. The Driver 2.0 suits my style of surfing more off the tail. It also suits neutral and front footed surfers alike. I like the Driver 2.9 better and I would even consider using the Driver 2.0 as my small wave performance board at 5’7” due to the speed it carries.

I found the dominator to be one if the best boards I have ridden it just needs more nose kick in the wavegarden pool as the waves there are small and steep in the pocket. not sure how to tell if one is a front footed or rear footed surfer ?! have you done a video on this topic yet ?

Would be awesome if you can add a nuance if a board is better for punchy or slopey waves. With that rocker I'm hesitant to try that it in the 2ft-3ft slopey waves i have out where i live.
Thanks for the recommendation on those will check them out. But I was requesting that you add that detail to reviews, you said this was good in 2 to x feet but I was curious what type of wave will it work in cuz a 2 foot wave at a punchy spot is different than a 2 foot wave at a slower spot. I got the rnf retro and swordfish on your recommend. The rnf retro can handle the 2-4 foot slopey waves pretty well, love that board but was looking for a more high performance board that could handle slopey waist to chest high flatter waves. The swordfish seems like it needs more punch because of the rocker profile.

I72 is mental too. This SD 2.0 favors neutral to front footed surfing for maximum drive. The I72 can be Back Foot, Neutral and probably good for front footed surfers to.
My Pivot Quad rears are unique and nothing like them in FCSII. Sorry… you can buy mine in Two Tab to use in your FCSII plugs with the inserts. That’s what I use and they go mental. S Driver 2.0 suits a front footed surfer better…. The UD suits a back footed - neutral footed surfer better. I personally like the UD better… I more of back footed surfer.
@@Julianuribe23 I try to surf the board in textured or occasionally choppy surf to give you guys some idea of how the boards respond in tough conditions. Not super interested in testing boards in 1-4 choppy close outs…. Can’t tell much on how a board responds in conditions like that.
This just sucks! They have trestles to try boards on. Not a ripple of water out of place, no rips to paddle against. I guess that is why lost mayhems go so well having waves like this to tune your designs on.

When it comes to small wave performance shortboard I honestly think you were surfing way better on the pyzel phantom.

I recommend the Inferno 72 or Driver 2.0
Noel, what's your durability rating for the light speed tech? If Helium is a ten, where do future flex and light speed fall on that scale?

SciFi 2. Needs a good wave to go good. The SD2.0 can surf hood in smaller waves but I found it better suited for neutral to front footed surfers.

Dominator 2 is more forgiving, paddles better and Carrie’s more speed compared to S Driver 2. The S D2.0 will out perform the D2 in the pocket and loves to be surfed off the front foot.
What would work better, Lightspeed Driver 2.0 or Lightspeed Sub Driver 2.0 in 2-6 beach breaks?
For Back footed surfers I say Driver 2.0, and for front footed surfers I say Sub Driver 2.0

How does the board compare to the chilli volume 2?
The BV2 is faster down the line and it will grovel better. The 96 can handle bigger steeper surf. Both boards are epic…
Hi Noel …. are your Poly PU boards laminated with Team Glass 4s/4 or do you sometimes use standard glass like 4+4/4?
I prefer team light for performance… especially in reviews. Stock glass can often feel stiff and heavy.

i have i72 and driver2. Driver 2 is faster, better all around. i72 has more tail rocker....it surfs good, I just never vibed with it.

Possibly but I think it was more the conditions. They were definitely junkier waves than those in most of his other reviews.

I72 is mental too. This SD 2.0 favors neutral to front footed surfing for maximum drive. The I72 can be Back Foot, Neutral and probably good for front footed surfers to.

Hey Noel, Queastion about your momentum series quad rear pivots. What fcs2 quad rears is similar to yours with the flat foils ?
My Pivot Quad rears are unique and nothing like them in FCSII. Sorry… you can buy mine in Two Tab to use in your FCSII plugs with the inserts. That’s what I use and they go mental. Here is the link to check them out….

Anyone know if there's much difference between sub driver 2.0 and Uber driver?
S Driver 2.0 suits a front footed surfer better…. The UD suits a back footed - neutral footed surfer better. I personally like the UD better… I more of back footed surfer.
Please surf some beach breaks or something besides a world class wave where everything works decent
I do that a little in the winter time. It’s tough to feel out a board in 1-2 turn Beachies.

@@Julianuribe23 I try to surf the board in textured or occasionally choppy surf to give you guys some idea of how the boards respond in tough conditions. Not super interested in testing boards in 1-4 choppy close outs…. Can’t tell much on how a board responds in conditions like that.

This just sucks! They have trestles to try boards on. Not a ripple of water out of place, no rips to paddle against. I guess that is why lost mayhems go so well having waves like this to tune your designs on.
